The book was helpful in some ways. It did go over all of the competencies. However, like some other reviewers stated, the practice tests were not at all like the questions on the actual exam (I took it today, by the way). For instance, the questions in the study guide math practice test were very straight forward. I didn't struggle with any of them and they were worded in a very straight forward manner. In the actual exam, some of the questions weren't so straight forward. Instead of providing you with the measurements, and asking you to calculate area, the exam might tell you the total, and then give you one equation, and you have to substitute one equation for the other (in order to eliminate one variable) to get either the length or the width (whichever the question is asking for). Or another example would be instead of asking you if lines are perpendicular, what are their slopes, it might ask you a more complex question where they only give you the two lines. You have to know to calculate slope and then also know what the slope would be if the lines were perpendicular, parallel, etc... In other words, it's not just straight calculations. I also did not think the math sections explained the concepts very well and the actual layout of the math problems and sections weren't easily digestible. The writers of this book should read some math textbooks and see how they are laid out and how they present information in a more logical fashion. Additionally, there were a lot of vocabulary terms not even mentioned in the book. Luckily, I have a strong foundation in these other subjects so I was able to pass, but if I hadn't, and had relied on this book alone, I don't think I would have been prepared well enough to pass this exam. Also, there were parts of the book where the ink was completely blurry and the text was illegible.
by subtest:Reading: matches the general foramt of the real test but the types of questions asked are very inaccurate. For my test in 11/2016 the questions were more on the the subject content of the reading passages.English language skills: Pretty much dead on. if you do well on the practice tests and study the types of words you normally make mistakes on you should do well.Math sub-test: the practice tests in the book are about half a grade level lower then you will find on the real test. If you do not complete the practice tests with time to spare keep studying.Essay sub-test: this is a mixed bag. if you are lucky you will get an essay question that you can quickly answer without thought as time is an issue for this test. My general suggestion is to quickly write a brief outline on your scrap pad before you start typing. If you are in are not a very good writer then I suggest getting external help from a tutor and read the bedford reader before you make any attempt at this subtest.NOTE: THE TIME LIMITS LISTED FOR THE TESTS ARE INCORRECT IN THIS BOOK AS THEY WERE CHANGED AFTER THE STATE REVIEWED THE TESTS AND PEOPLE'S RESPONSE TO THEM.Overall: Assuming you attempt to take all the subtests in one sitting as most people do because of the costs, keep in mind while studying the extended length of the test and stress will take a toll on your brain. When I practiced for this test I would finish each section with 2 minutes to spare and an extra 15 minutes for the math section. During the test due to extended stress I did not finish the reading and math sections in time. (I was a bit fried)NOTE: THE FTCE GK TEST IS NOT A TEST OF KNOWLEDGE FOR THE MOST PART; IT IS A TEST OF SPEED. MAKE SURE YOU WATCH YOUR TIME WHEN TAKING THE TEST.Yes I did pass all sections, but I was surprised I did not fail the reading sub-test as ran out of time by a large margin and quickly filled in the last 8 questions bubbles when i hit the 30 second mark. About me I am a slow reader with higher than normal mathematical skills. If you read fast then you should fare better than I did on the reading section. If you mathematical capabilities are not very good for an adult then beware.
If you want to pass this exam, PLEASE do yourself a favor and buy this book! I bought a few and flash cards etc, they were all garbage compared to this. It breaks down every section, every question, every subject, into the easiest possible way to understand what you need to know. I haven't done math since high school (hate it, horrible at it) and I'm in my 30's, I was absolutely terrified and this book helped me pass the math on my second try! It also has multiple practice tests. This is the only book you'll need, I promise!! I only wish they had one for the Art subject area!!!
I liked the way this book is set up. Each section has a test at the end. What I did to help study for the GK Test was to take those tests at the end of each section and then go back in to study whatever I missed. This worked out great because I was able to pass all the sections of the GK on the first try.I have since passed this book on to my fellow teachers to help them with their GK scores.
This book was't helpful at all. I used study.com and this book, and after taking the test, I realized that nothing I studied in this book was covered on the test. There are no reading questions similar to the FTCE in this book. I thought I felt prepared, and then panicked on the test because I wasn't prepared at all. If I could give zero stars, I would.
I passed the exam after reading this book 10 times over the course of 2 months. The ELS section could use supplemental material, but it's good enough to pass. The science section is enough to pass but barely. It lacks a few key things, especially scenarios. Math section was great. The reading section was the worst. They give pleasant reading articles in the practice tests, which is the opposite that you will get when you are actually taking the exam. I thought I failed the test as I walked out of the testing center. I was relieved and was in disbelief to see that I passed it after the results were posted.
This book helped me to pass the Reading, English Language, and Mathematics (still waiting on the results of the Essay) sections of the FTCE GKT test; however, I found the test itself to be harder than the material reviewed in the book.
