About the Author

Camille DeAngelis first traveled to Ireland as a college freshman to co-write Hanging Out in Ireland, a backpackers' guide published by Wylie & Sons in 2001. She graduated from New York University in 2002 with a minor in Irish Studies. After several years of visiting Ireland on vacation and visiting her grandmother's cousins in County Cavan, Camille moved to Galway in 2004 to enroll in the M.A. in Writing program at the National University of Ireland. She lived in Galway on and off until 2009, and goes back to visit as often as she can. Camille enjoys making ten-pointed K-turns on country roads, a hot whiskey at the corner pub, and typing up the day's experiences back at the B&B, and writing weird and spooky fiction. I've used Moon guides for many years now, and they've never steered me wrong. I used the Ireland guide in 2015, and it was of the same quality I have come to expect and appreciate.Specifically, I used the guide for a two week road trip beginning in Dublin (third time to Ireland; second time hiring a car), heading southwest past the Rock of Cashel to Cork, then west to Kerry, north along the coast to the Cliffs of Moher and Inis Mor, and ending back in Dublin. Primarily I use guides as a starting point for planning where to go, map details, and sometimes where to stay and eat. However, I always update and double check with internet research and word of mouth, if possible, (especially regarding restaurants, accommodations, prices, and opening hours), so I never ran into issues with information being incorrect even though this guide was 8 years old at the time of use. Given that, I found the Moon guide to be excellent for deciding where to focus my trip for the two weeks, approximately how long to spend in each place, and how to get there. My favorite feature of all Moon guides I've used thus far (including, Ireland, Ecuador, the Galapagos, and Zion & Bryce Canyon Nat'l Parks) is the little half moon logo indicating a highlight or editor's choice. Every single one of the sites that I've been guided to by one of those little half moons has been worth it. That level of reliably curated expert recommendation is what I look for first and foremost in a guide.

I ordered this book at the recommendation of the tour director, we are heading to Ireland soon with a group. I've been using Moon Handbooks for thirty years because they're written precisely for travelers like me. I'm a "tweener." I'm not a hardcore rock climber, nor do I look for luxury hotels. I want to know where I can find the best day hikes and activities, the most interesting but inexpensive places to eat, and reasonable but clean accommodations. My wife and I had a FABULOUS vacation in Ireland and this Moon Guide was essential to our trip planning.If there's anything negative for me to say about these Moon Handbooks is that many of them seem to be written by left-wing authors with an attitude about commerce and progress, and sometimes there's excessive preaching about the environment, but it's easy to just skip the drivel and focus on the relevant portions.

Somehow, the author has made Ireland really boring. How is that possible?

Used this book on a recent trip to Ireland. Lots of helpful info and good tips. We were especially glad we took the author's advice to skip the sweater shops near the docks at Inishmore and wait to do our shopping at the entrance to Dun Aengus, the shops (and shopkeeps) were far more charming with we found some lovely unique handmade gifts. Two things we found and loved that weren't in the book were the Doolin Caves and Joyce County Sheepdogs demonstrations, but everything else we toured on our two-week trip we planned from this guide.

This was published in May 2007, and I consulted it during my stay in June and July. I can vouch for its accuracy. The strength of the book lies in the fact that as far as I can tell from the acknowledgements (worth reading for their charm), the whole was written by a young American ex-pat, Camille DeAngelis, and therefore has the consistency of a single p-o-v that reflects her encyclopedic knowledge, tempered enthusiasm, and evident stamina. While the guide is markedly less comprehensive on history, sightseeing, and local lore than competing guides, it is very thorough on practicalities such as civilized accomodation, decent eats, bus routes, and ATMs. I would use this to work out the nitty-gritty of planning the details of staying once you figure out in your itinerary where you are going and how long in each locale you'd be staying.That's where the prefaced itineraries geared to particular cultural, scenic, historic, or recreational interests come in, as well as a few paragraphs at the end of each county section telling you how long would be ideal to remain in a certain location if you want to partake of its attractions-- or flee their lack of appealing destinations. She was accurate in her descriptions, noting such details as the mattresses in a hostel, how far said hostel was from the main road, what kind of road it was, how to find the place given its remoteness, the temperament of the caretaker, and prices for what she charged vs. what you got for the money. All this in about a hundred words. She tells that the nearest ATM is 27 kilometres away. She recommends of the three choices the pub (not the quieter one I favored...but the same one all the guides like!) with the best craic. She warns of the few shops, the difficulty without a car in seeing it all, and the scattered nature of the dramatically situated settlement. While her coverage of the archaeological and cultural sites there was for my tastes far too brief, such information can be obtained easily with other references.Like the Moon Handbook I remember using on a trip five years ago to the Big Island of Hawai'i, this series concentrates on the good place to grab a bite, the B&B that won't rip you off but which may not have t.v., the view from the window of the pricy hotel, the fare to the airport, the cost of the taxi, the options if you have a week vs. a day.The pictures she took, often in black-and-white, make it difficult to do justice to the places, but this does keep costs down for this affordable book, and you can always take your own snapshots or buy postcards! She took care with every feature here. The maps are a bit less detailed than those in a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide, but easier to read and larger on the page. For those of you unsatisfied with other guidebooks' tiny maps and insets, the Moon Handbook provides bigger type both in the page layout and the graphics. Symbols often mark tourist attractions. The pages are easy to scan without being cluttered. The shops, pubs, attractions, and bus and rail stations are marked clearly in text and on maps. Streets actually have names on maps and are not only drawn blanks!A telling example of DeAngelis' thoroughness is the Irish-language section. Short as this portion is, she thought it through. She gives you actual words and everyday sentences and (not simply cute phrases about buying folks drinks and/or flirting with them) with phonetic equivalents, and encourages you (I studied Irish there on my recent trip in that locale for those two weeks) to use them when conversing with the locals in the Gaeltacht-- or, I might add, outside of it! She is realistic about the chances of actually using much Irish (earnest outsiders tend to be in my experience regarded often with bemusement or suspicion by native speakers), but I encourage her inclusion of this material, often superficially treated in other guides.Finally, she wrote a lovely preface, that begins with the trope that (I paraphrase) ten years from now you will remember the trip that you are now planning, and from there goes into an evocative memory of the pub, the craic, the stranger who struck up a chat, the scenery as you walked to your temporary home away from home that evening. It's a powerful way to bring you into the power that Ireland still can hold, despite the rush to ugly bungalows, rampant consumerism, littered countrysides, urban gridlock, and suburban sprawl. She does not shy away from these realities, but urges you as a visitor to understand these marks of our society as the island's prosperity must contend with, in my clumsy metaphor, killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Bought about 10 of them for my co workers, last Xmas. Got tired of my copy always on "reference" somewhere in the hall, and me having to hunt it down.Excellent business tool, always seems to give the perfect reference when you are crafting that all important email to the world.Noticed after the first couple of weeks that they all had creases in them and were at ready reach to everyone's computer.

Great space saver of having two reference books a dictionary and thesaurus combined into one book.

I am an extremely meticulous reader. I like to understand every single new word I see. Most readers are pretty lazy. They just assume the meanings of unrecognizable words in their context, and that's okay too, but I sometimes find this book to be indispensable when it comes to uh ... "nit-pickery." Hmm, I don't even think that's a real word. Looks like I need to pull out the old dictionary again. Heh, heh! Anyway, this book has other uses besides understanding what you read. It's a thesaurus as well as a dictionary, and if you ever want to just strut around being a verbose and pretentious jackass, this book is a great treasure trove of strange, obscure, and exotic synonyms for the most common and overly-used words. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. I've gotten many a brainy girl in the sack thanks to this book (a lie). It also makes a nice paper-weight or doorstop, and when you've finally worn out your first copy, you can always buy a new one and use the old one for toilet paper. Ah, the simple things! See how much class I have since I got my copy of the OADDAT? Pat me on the back, damn you!

The Oxford Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus is an up-to-date, handy, clear reference book for one's reading table. I wanted a dictionary of American English. Success.However, I wasted my money because of one problem: the font size is undersized (six-point maximum) to be practical if one's eyesight is less than 20/20 or you're over 50-years old. I'm going back to my 1978 Pocket Oxford Dictionary rather than strain my eyes; to the devil with words younger than 28-years old. Using a magnifying glass defeats two important objectives: convenience and portability.

I think this is one of the best and easiest thesauruses I have ever had. Not only does it have the definition but all the alternate words you can use are right behind it.I think it's EXCELLENT!

I use this dictionary daily and it is very valuable. Occasionally, I've run across words that aren't in it, but that's to be expected from a paperback.Most combination references list the thesaurus entries separately at the bottom of the page. This book integrates the listings together, all the material on a word is found in one place.This is the best compact reference I've ever used. It has greatly enhanced both my reading and writing.

This is a very good and thorough dictionary with quick reference in thesaurus. The paper quality is better than most of paperback dictionary. I ever bought American Heritage Dictionary-paperback and Webster-paperback in last few years and this Oxford dictionary is the best paper dictionary I ever got and the price is worth.

About the Author

Glenn Whitman directs the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning at St. Andrew's Episcopal School where he also serves as the Dean of Studies for grades Preschool through 12th grade and teaches history. Glenn is a former Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence Fellow and author of Dialogue with the Past: Engaging Students and Meeting Standards through Oral History as well as co-editor of Think Differently and Deeply, the national publication of the CTTL. Glenn has also written numerous articles on translating MBE research into classroom practice such as, “Assessment and the Learning Brain” that can be found in Independent School magazine. He is also a blogger for Edutopia. Glenn earned his MALS from Dartmouth College and a BA from Dickinson College.Dr. Ian Kelleher earned his bachelor of science degree in geochemistry from the University of Manchester and his PhD from the University of Cambridge, Churchill College. He is the head of Research for Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning, where he focuses on the development of projects measuring the effectiveness of research-informed strategies used by St. Andrew’s teachers and students.
