We got this, initially, from the library and had to return it before reading it. I read through the foreward, though, and thought the book sounded so good that I bought it off Amazon.Unfortunately, the foreward is the best part of the book. There are no pictures of the art and the narrative is really choppy and mentions homosexuality too many times. I don't care if someone is or isn't gay, that's not my beef, the issue is more my kid isn't ready to learn about art with a side of gender politics. And the mentions of the artists' sexuality are really off-the-wall and do not add anything to biographies. It's just kind of 'he didn't have many friends and people avoided him because he was a homosexual.' That's the level of the narrative, which for me, as a parent, left me thinking 'WHY bother to mention it at all?' Why not use the space to talk more about the art?And then there were the (young) lovers who were mentioned once and then never again. So-and-so lived with artist X and then the biography continues, never mentions so-and-so again but brings up new people living with the artists and it's like, what happened? How is this person relevant?Very bumpy narrative, a really off putting way of discussing artists' love lives and no pictures of the art. This is a do not buy for us. It's going straight into the garbage. No one needs to read it.

"It's not what an artist does that counts, but what he is" - Picasso, p. 56The book contains 16 Chapters on the following 17 artists in birth year order: Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), Peter Bruegel (1525?-1569), Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625), Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), Mary Cassatt (1845-1926), Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945), Henri Matisse (1869-1954), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Marc Chagall (1887-1985), Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986), William H. Johnson (1901-1970), Salvador Dali (1904-1989), Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), Diego Rivera (1886-1957) & Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), Andy Warhol (1928-1987).It contains a variety of gossipy tidbits about the artists' lives. The cross selection of artists is an interesting combination. Krull introduced me to three artists of which I was not familiar (Anguissola, Kollwitz and Johnson). As a result Krull has whet my appetite and I will now seek out further information. Hewett"s illustrations are entertainly and cleverly done. I am especially particular to her rendition of Hokusai (he is wearing a kimino with both "The Wave" and "Mt. Fuji" on it).I'm not convinced that the book is intended for young readers (ages 9-12). The gossip is on occasion adult in content. No actual prints of any of the artist's paintings are included, which was a surprise given the high cost of the book. This proves cruelly aggravating given that Krull references select paintings with accompanying notes.Additional tidbits missing from the book: Dali did the dream sequence in Alfred Hitchcock's "Spellbound" starring Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman. Chagall's "The Dead Man" was the inspiration for the title of the Broadway play "Fiddler on the roof." Rivera caused a scandal when he painted the portrait of Lenin in a Rockefeller Center mural in '33. In addition, he used his clout to enable Leon Trotsky to live in Mexico. Two years later Kahlo introduced Trotsky to her friend, a Stalinist agent, who killed him with an ice-axe.

I teach Art Appreciation at a high school and love this book! It's an easy, fun read and chalk full of fun, gossipy facts about many famous artists. In a generation that eats and breathes Twitter, FB and other social medias to get the latest scoop on everyone and everything, this book is really appealing. And while they are listening to stories of all the "shocking" things about artists, you can even sneak in some "boring" art terms and iconic paintings.

"How can you print a piece of your own soul," Dickinson, p. 51This is the 2nd in the Krull and Hewitt's "Lives of ..." series. The book contains 19 chapters on 20 writers in birth order: Murasaki Shikibu (973?-1025?), Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Jane Austen (1775-1817), Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), Charles Dickens (1812-1870), Charlotte & Emily Bronte (1816-1855 & 1818-1848), Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888), Mark Twain (1835-1910), Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924), Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), Jack London (1876-1916), Carl Sandburg (1878-1967), E. B. White (1899-1985), Zora Neale Hurston (1901?-1960), Langston Hughes (1902-1967), Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991)This is a perfect book for young adolescents and pre-teens who as they grow and mature frequently feel awkward. Krull introduces us to the idiosyncrasies of the literary. Some of the authors were loners, eccentric, a wee bit peculiar. Michael Jackson's behaviors might seem normal when held in comparison. Some retreated into themselves. Some sought out adventures. Some as adults were unsuccessful at the ordinary. Some worked at a young age to support the family. Some took daily walks, very long daily walks. Some were not healthy and therefore wrote in bed. There were some similarities and some differences, but they all shared a singular conviction to write and write they each did well.Hewitt's delightful portraits of the writers are precious. My favorite portrait is of Frances Hodgson Burnett of "The Secret Garden" fame. Her hat is the secret garden.Given the high price of the book, I was surprised that Krull did not include a list of the authors' books and/or poems and the publication years. END

I never knew how many people screwed Jimi Hendrix. Michael Jeffries,Alan Douglas, especially Devon Wilson and Ed Chalpin. This book is great for explaining everything behind, the scenes with,Jimi

This book came quickly. Quality is wonderful. The book is unique and the stories behind the songs are artfully crafted by a gifted writer. Excellent and a surprise, especially for $0.1 !

My 3 star rating isn't really a put-down. 3.5 is probably more accurate. The overall content and presentation are fine and there's alot of useful information in here. My problem with it is that I'd hoped to read a bunch of stuff I'd never seen elsewhere. But in fact, I didn't find much of anything that I hadn't already read elsewhere. Of the stuff that is here, some isn't even as detailed as you'll find in other books like Setting The Record Straight or Shadwick's Musician.

good

I am a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix. I listen to his music every day, and it never gets old. I've listened to all of the essential albums (and many more) but have never actually read any book on him and his music. I saw this book in the music part of the book store. I quickly looked through the pages, and was very intrigued, since I'd never heard where he got his inspiration from. And I must say this book will intrigue you as well. It really fills in the gaps on some of Jimi's songs, such as on Castles Made of Sand. I didn't know that the first verse was about Jimi's mom and dad fighting and eventually splitting up. Or the second verse was about his troubled brother Leon. And the third verse was about Jimi's mom dying. These interesting facts and more are in this book. If you own a lot of Jimi Hendrix CDs out there, and you're asking yourself: How did he do that? Where did he get that idea for a song? or Who is that song about? Then buy this book. It's a very informative and an interesting read.

Interesting because the subject is interesting. If you're looking just for an introduction to Jimi Hendrix and a cursory look at each of his songs - the book is fine. I was looking for a more serious book, one with less fanboy gushing praise and opinion.

Got this for my son who has sensory modulation issues as well as Childhood Apraxia. Both lead him to become very frustrated and usually, that involves hitting or pushing or a big temper tantrum when he doesn't get his way. Patience is def something he is working on and the fact that he is in love with just about every type of safari animal made this a real winner for bedtime!

This is a cute book that is a little bit rhythmic, while teaching the virtue of patience. I am not sure what the recommended age range is, however my just turned 4 year old did not quite understand everything in the story. I think the more we read it, the more she will grasp. I enjoyed it and feel that it will eventually become a favorite because it is 'sing-songy' & my children like that. They'll eventually beable to pull out from this story that Remy was being taught a valuable lesson- patience. It is not a book (IMO) you will read once with a preschooler & them get exactly "patience" out of it.

I LOVE this book and so does my daughter. Nice rhyming scheme and nice message. Really cute illustrations as well! I will buy this for other kids as gifts for sure.

Great book, with rhyming and advanced vocabulary. Cute way to incorporate grassland animals into teaching a valuable lesson.

This story is totally adorable. The writing is excellent (it rhymes) and the pictures are very funny. Even though my 4-year old does not like to be reminded about practicing her patience, she still loves Remy and understands the lesson inherent in the story. An excellent book for 3-5 year olds.

Andy McGuire makes the best kids books. My son has always loved them.A quick read with a great message and beautiful drawings.

We could all learn a little more patience, just like Remy. Great pictures, great story. The little toddler loves this book.

Very good book!
