"It's now in its second edition and it's a great book. Here's why. The authors have combined Eastern European and North American resistance training practices to present a truly global perspective on current theories on how athletes should train. Compared to the first edition, this edition is much more practical."Bigger Faster Stronger

From the Back Cover

This second edition of Science and Practice of Strength Training comes with many additions and changes. A new coauthor, Dr. William Kraemer, joins Dr. Vladimir Zatsiorsky in expanding on the principles and concepts needed for training athletes. Together, the authors have trained more than 1,000 elite athletes, including Olympic, world, continental, and national champions and record holders. The concepts they divulge are influenced by both Eastern European and North American perspectives. The authors integrate those concepts in solid principles, practical insights, coaching experiences, and directions based on scientific findings. This edition is much more practical than its predecessor; to this end, the book provides the practitioner the understanding to craft strength training programs based on individualsÂ’ needs. Science and Practice of Strength Training, Second Edition, shows that there is no one program that works for any one athlete at all times or for all conditions. This book addresses the complexity of strength training programs while providing straightforward approaches to take under specific circumstances. Those straightforward approaches are applied to new physiological concepts and training practices, which provide readers with the most current information in the science and practice of strength training. These practices are also applied to the three new chapters, which will help readers design safe and effective strength training programs for women, young athletes, and seniors. In addition, the authors provide examples of strength training programs to demonstrate the principles and concepts they explain in the book. This expanded and updated coverage of strength training concepts will ground readers in the understanding they need in order to develop appropriate strength training programs for each person that they work with.

Product is a textbook on the bodies adaptation to training. As such is a dense read and will take multiple read throughs to understand like many texts. This book covers everything between the relationship of maximal and relative strength, the role of tendons and biomechanics in movemant. And differentiated the styles of micro and mesocycle trainning used. I consider this the most important book in my kinseology library and a go to book whenever I am devising a new training program.**An important note is this book will not teach you training programs, nor specific exercises, the best way to use it, is to check your micro and meso cycles for optimal recovery time, and the line up you use for your exercises to best meet your goals and avoid under/over training.

This one of the essential texts for those interested in Strength and Conditioning, and more specifically the science behind programming and training for progress. There is enough information online on just what this book covers so I won't summarize it here. But I would highly recommend it. It is not quite as dense and academic as "Supertraining" but does involve much more real science than most other texts. The references pull from a wide body of research from a variety of sources.

How often do you say - WOW. When reading a textbook?? Well, if you are really into strength training, this literature will bring you a new and fuller understanding of just what it is and how it is done. This should be on the book shelf of all lifters and body builders, along side of Bill Pearl's books. This is not going to give you specific exercises for like building your bicepts, Bill Pearl's books do that in spades. No, this book built on the latest science and on the author's years of training olymipic/international champions is a rare mix of the two. I had expected that there would be kinestics pics galore showing all of the exercises, etc. But to my pleasant surprise it was more on the sciences; biological, neurological; physical chemistry, mental conditioning and in the "real world" what works and does not!! It blew away some of my closely held falicies and replaced them with research and actual training methods that are proven to work. I have termed it a textbook which might offend the authors, but it seemed appropriate as it reads in many sections like a text book. Replete, with formulas, math, graphs; enough to make any of us reach for the Excedrine. I found that once well confused, I would just skip ahead and there I was pleased to find softer examples and illustrations that reflected back onto and made more understandable the "textbook" stuff. The knowledge and training methodology(s) gave me a Quantum leap forward into understanding my rate(s) of progress and how to keep on pressing toward the mark with out; burn out, plataus, injuries, etc. I have totally revamped my strength conditioning program to mirror and include the book's knowledge. I am gaining more, with less time spent at the gym - that alone is worth the cost of this book. The only negative is why this book was not around when I was peaking ! I can not turn the clock back, and I am now only 5 months into a return to the gym, and at 65 in better strength now than my body building program of 5 days a week at 40!

The very best "strength training" book. Not your fluffy pumped up muscle mag.

Details vital for the serious coach

William Kraemer is one of the foremost researchers on strength and conditioning in the US and Zatsiorsky is a sport scientist molded in the former Soviet system, the result is a book that is heavy on the science of how the body adapts to strength training without any of the faddish nonsense by books written for consumers. If you want to know how muscles adapt to strength and power training and how to develop proper strength-training programs based on years of science, then buy this book now. If you have been introduced to strength training via crossfit then definitely buy this book to find out how to apply the actual science behind strength training; many of Glassman's original principles are based on the Soviet system (let's face it, anybody serious about strength training can trace their roots back to eastern european and soviet-era research) and this book does an excellent job of explaining how adaptations occur. This book is one of my 'go-to' references when writing articles or developing talks on strength training. it doesn't provide sample programs, but instead does provide the information on how to develop your own programs. It's not written for the typical fitness consumer, so be prepared for a science-laden text. For any serious student of performance training this book is another 'must-have' for the library.

This is a must addition to the library of all strength trainers and traineês. It's an excellent mixture of solid science and practical applications. I can highly recommend this.

Excellent book.

I read this book in conjunction with an art museum tour. It suited the purposed perfectly; the discussion of Pisarro and Cezanne was insightful, and the descriptions were clear. The discussion of ochre and paint hues fascinated me. Lizette's personal story was pretty lame. Her professional, artistic world was much stronger. The character of Pascal was the most engaging; other minor characters were memorable as well. The presentation of the transition of the art world from Impressionism to Surrealism was informative. I will say that Lizette's list was not what I expected I thought that her list would have to do with the paintings hidden from the Germans during World War II. While the novel addressed the German theft of art works, the occupation of France was not as major as the art history component. Her list had more to do with her, like a bucket list. Since I was interested in the art history more than the narrative, I liked the novel.

Susan Vreeland, best selling author of historical fiction about art and artists, creates another masterful book in “Lisette’s List” She pledges in her professed love of art to have the Old World be her life companion. Her works have demonstrated her adherence to that vow. In the List, her descriptive passages extolling the beauty of works by Cezanne, Pissarro, Picasso, and Chagall are lustrous and the threatened destruction of them is appalling.Lisette and Andre Roux move from Paris to the village of Roussillon In Provence to care for his aged grandfather, Pascal. Lisette, dismayed at having to forego an apprenticeship in a Paris gallery, is not happy about the move. Andre, a picture frame craftsman, is patient and kindly and eventually she falls under the spell of Pascal who weaves marvelous tales of his association with the creators of beautiful paintings he now owns, and who coaches her in the ways of color, composition, and construction of masterful paintings. She and Andre fall heir to Pascal’s collection and, when Andre leaves to join the fight against the Nazis who are invading southern France, he hides the paintings. He is killed before he can reveal their location to Lisette and they are lost. Lisette spends most of her time in the novel trying to locate the paintings. In the process, she comes to love the people of Roussillon, the countryside, and the beauty of the art she seeks. The novel’s concept provides Vreeland with the opportunity to showcase her knowledge about artists and painting, enthrall the reader with glorious scenic descriptions, and display the product of meticulous research. I enjoyed the book despite some overworked prose and dialogue, and recommend it for a serious look at classic art and its creators.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

"Lisette's List," in which Susan Vreeland chronicles the experiences of Lisette Roux after they move from Paris in the late 1930's to a small village in Provence. Lisette, thwarted because her ambition of becoming a curator of art must be put on hold, but she discovers that she learns much about art in the backwater town. And she is caught up in a mystery involving some missing paintings. Susan Vreeland offers an education, not only in art and artists, but also in the human heart and its capabilities.

lisette's list was of particular interest to me because i will be living in that part of provence for a month next summer, very likely in rousillon. the story was not quite your typical second world war civilians and resistance fighters against the nazis and there was little of the brutality that usually comes up in other books about this period. instead, it focused on the lives of the people who were relatively untouched by the violence but still suffered from lack of the basic necessities of life. the characters were well drawn and either likeable or dislikeable (there always has to be at least one). the descriptions of the towns and surroundings including the ochre mines were vivid and easily able to visualize in the mind's eye. also interesting was the description of the early lives of the artists who later became famous and the search for the priceless works of art which disappeared during the occupation. overall, a good read.

This was an interesting read especially for those who love art and artists of this era (Chagall, Picasso, Pissarro) learning about where and how colors/paints are made and of course intertwined in WWII historical facts. For me the book fell apart with the obvious "love story" that was too predictable. I have a few friends who adore this book I had a harder time at the end of it, happy I read it because I learned so many new facts about paintings I have loved for many years and history of the war which I can't get enough of.

Albert Speer: Architecture 1932-1942

Review

“In 1985, Mr. Krier produced a monograph about Speer's designs, which display a cold, grandiose, neoclassical style. . . . The Monacelli Press has reissued it in a lavish edition but this time with the added twist of an introduction by the renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern, the dean of Yale's architecture school.” —The Wall Street Journal“As the immense and waxing volume of scholarly and popular work on the Nazis (from Elie Wiesel to Quentin Tarantino) shows, no issue is forbidden territory. The more specific question, however, is whether Speer’s architectural oeuvre has any formal merit.” —The Nation“Speer, Hitler's architect and also the Third Reich's minister of armaments and war production, manipulated scale, proportion, columns, and entablatures with great facility—not to mention prodigiousness—and the documentation of Speer's output is of interest. There are even moments I dare call sublime, but they are few. It's mostly crushingly heavy and funereal.” —Architectural Record

I have admired Albert Speer for many years. Perhaps I am a little old bastard that has to hide his personal troubles in evil figures like this nazi architect. Perhaps it is so. I leave it to you to think what you want. This said, this book is fantastic. It is the kind of book that HAS to be printed on paper. No amount of digital wizardry will give you the pleasure to have such a beautiful volume in your hands. And the content. I do not like the bilingual format but the written information is rich and the graphic stuff is fascinating. Albert Speer probably is burning in hell but he was a genius. This book only increased my admiration for him. I recommend this book without hesitation.

HB-w DJ///10 x 13"///251 semi glossy pages///175 BW photos///3 color photos///330 architectural drawings///52 architectural maps-floorplans etc.///8 drawings///7 architectural charts/// one word here--AWESOME. Hope this helps,,,cap

It was predictable that the publication of this book might generate a measure of controversy. Being a reprint, however, much of the expected furor will have likely dissipated. I think Monacelli provided a valuable service (and an exhibition of backbone) in the reprinting of this work. On several levels this book has merit and elevating Albert Speer's stature as a Nazi operative does not appear to be among them. The existence of the Third Reich is an historical reality and pretending otherwise is just delusional. Maybe ripping out the autobahn will erase its origins from our collective memories as well? It's rather curious that the same sensitivities are not evoked when the old Soviet Union is examined. This work offers an important insight into both Speer's mind and that of his notorious client. There is no question Speer was a very talented architect and he was given the heady and challenging assignment to redesign one of Europe's greatest cities. Wether or not his plan ever had the remotest chance of realization the vision is none the less intriguing. Considering these two factors, alone, the book deserves to be in print.Given the atrocities of the Third Reich, that the Allied powers would wish to destroy any and all vestiges of that regime is certainly understandable. From the luxury of a seventy-year interval architects and historians might view it otherwise. The Coliseum in Rome was the venue for the feeding of the Christians to the lions. The Aztec pyramids in Mexico provided the altars for hundreds of thousand of human sacrifices. And one can only imagine the treatment of those employed in the construction of the Great Pyramids of Egypt or the Great Wall of China. Should these structures have been destroyed for their association with evil? I'm not suggesting that the Reich Chancellery or any other Third Reich edifice had the same significance or merit as those notable ancient sites, but I do believe the principle is the same. There are even those who view the world's skyscrapers as symbols of capitalist exploitation and would gladly see them razed. To appreciate the historical or aesthetic merits of a given society's artifacts should not suggest an endorsement of that group's actions or philosophy. Again, it doesn't seem as though this standard is very evenly applied by the critics.I found this book very interesting - a noteworthy example of classical government architecture and a peak into the megalomania of Adolf Hitler. The book is well produced and with Amazon's generous discounts, well priced. My only complaint, and it may not be justifiable, is that some of the photography is a bit grainy. I don't know if these old images could have been improved upon - but with a little photoshop magic - who knows? A worthwhile purchase for any college library or for the collector of architectural monographs.

It is convenient for us to believe that people like Hitler and other leaders of the Nazi party were mad or evil and misled or forced regular people into following them. When faced with the excesses carried out by apparently civilized people it is an easy answer to blame a malevolent force that once defeated must be expunged from the world. This Manichean view of life makes it hard to accept that things of value or beauty can be produced while these dark forces rule.In 1985 Léon Krier produced "Albert Speer: Architecture 1932-1942", based on a series of conversations with and documentation provided by Albert Speer, the convicted war criminal, who served as Hitler's chief architect until in 1942 he became Reichsminister of war production. This attempt to assess the design skills of Speer as part of the history of 20th century architecture was severely attacked. A facsimile of the book, with a new preface by the author and foreword by Robert Stern, Dean of the Yale School of Architecture, has just been published by The Monacelli Press.Speer was from an architectural family and had made a reputation prior to tying his fortunes to Hitler. His first major work was the construction of the Zeppelin-Feld Grandstand at Nuremberg in 1935. This huge stadium allowed for 90,000 parading people and with seating for over 60,000. At a party rally in 1937, 130 huge beams of light shot into the sky and created a huge space of light about which the British ambassador said "The effect was both solemn and beautiful, it was like being in a cathedral of ice" (p175). It continued the very effective use of space and light that was captured in Leni Riefenstahl's movie on the rally of 1934, "Triumph of the Will".However, what was more stunning was the plan for the modernization of Berlin, to create a new capital that would be the focus for the European continent under the New Germany. The overall plan focused on mass transport and the organization of the city into mixed use zones (heavy industry would be outside the city) built around a "super Champs Elysée", the North-South avenue. This "display piece of the Reich's ambitions and achievements" would have been 5 kilometers in length featuring a giant triumphal arch, designed by Hitler, at one end and the "Grosse Halle" at the end that was planned to hold 180,000 spectators with a cupola bigger than St. Peter's or the Pantheon. Some of this was completed but much was not as the war effort became the priority. After the war much of Speer's work was destroyed, his Chancellery by the Russians and other works by the Germans themselves.'To the question "Can a war criminal be a great artist?" my answer is undeniably yes." (Author's preface, page ix) and Speer was no political naïf. In his foreword to the original work he states, "my buildings were not solely intended to express the essence of the National-Socialist movement. They were an integral part of that movement." Unlike the Renaissance Popes who considered buildings as a pastime, "(f)or Hitler, it was part of the political will of the .. movement" (p213).Krier puts Speer's work in the context of its purpose but tries to clear away the connection of the classical style to Nazism, which he believes has successfully been used by the Modernist school of architecture to decry the classical style of design. He is particularly concerned that so much opprobrium has fallen on architecture as a symbol of tyranny whereas other products of the time, the autobahn, Volkswagen etc., have emerged unscathed. Krier is clearly impassioned about his beliefs and makes a lot of important and thought provoking points if sometimes going a little too far. There is a great deal of fascinating information in this book. The fact that it is a facsimile does produce a few issues in a fairly expensive book. The typeface fades sometimes on parts of the page and some of the photographs are grainy. Not surprisingly, most of the work is in black and white but the few color exceptions stand out, particularly one example showing the red marble around on the ornate doors in the Chancellery. The book was originally both in French and English and you get the essays and text in both languages. The new foreword is very thoughtful and there is an edited version of the author's original essay "An Architecture of Desire" along with the original. Apart from a few updates, I didn't really see the value of this "editing". It varies from the original in odd ways and is often not as coherent or as "colorful".This is a fascinating book for anyone trying to understand the role that architecture played in the minds of key Nazis like Hitler and Speer and also the Classical design history of the 20th century. It does however force the reader to face the question of whether something as bad as the Nazi worldview can produce good things. It is a question that the equally murderous regime of the Soviet Union has been largely able to avoid by winning the war and only slowly revealing its true excesses. By avoiding these difficult questions or giving simplistic answers we run the risk of failing to understand how these 20th century tyrannies arose and how they might again.

Over the course of my life I have adored the marble buildings of Rome and Constantinople due to the power they seem to invoke. This book illustrates the power Adolf Hitler wanted to impose on the world. From the monumental dome of the Great Hall to the fields of Nuremberg this book has it all.Though I have always known about the plans for Hitlers new Germania, I had no idea of the size and proportions of this new behemoth. This book is a must buy for all of students and adults fascinated by the Third Reich and the symbolism they wanted their subjects to discover. Overall I highly recommend this book to all!

Awesome book. Great detail and amazing pictures. You can find here a speer best constructions. I miss more pictures about the reich chancellery but still a good book.

While on a trip to Bhutan, I was made aware of this book. After spending ten days in the country, I appreciated the contents of the variety of essays written by Drexler. Her essays provide an examination of a variety of aspects of Bhutan, specifically the concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) as viewed from different perspectives within the country. This book is written for a specific audience--people interested in Bhutan, people who will or who have traveled to Bhutan.

In anticipation of a trip to Bhutan, I read a lot of books about the country, and this was the best of the lot. (In fact, after coming back from my 3+ weeks there, I might actually read this again.) It takes a good hard look at the Gross National Happiness concept as it applies to this essentially third-world country, and paints a very realistic picture of conditions in Bhutan, which are not as "Shangri-La" as they're popularly cracked up to be.

Drexler tells the story of Bhutan's unique experiment in elucidating and prioritizing Gross National Happiness (GNH). She tells it through dozens of interviews with citizens, Buddhists, and government officials. Even better, the tale is transmitted through beautiful narrative passages describing Bhutan's culture and traditions. It is almost inconceivable that a monarchy would voluntarily and on its own initiative cede power to democracy, and that that government would be accountable to quantify and measure GNH. As Bhutan now modernizes and confronts the globalization challenges of the 21st century, I can only hope that GNH remains front and center in its priorities.

An exceptionally helpful book. It is difficult to find good books on Bhutan that aren't basic travel guides. The author gave balanced look at a country that is trying to balance growth and traditional values. A wonderful book if you're interested in this unique place, an essential read if you're planning a trip.

Madeline Drexler has achieved a very rare quality with her essay, "A Splendid Isolation..." through the use of her years of experience as an investigative reporter on rather complex and delicate subjects; through her amazing compassion, never-ending curiosity, and clear, objectective thinking; and through her surprising willingness to allow her readers a glimpse into her personal spiritual journeys and how those affected or were affected by what she learned from Bhutan. The author's factual research is extensive and impeccable, yet it is how she wove the essential facts together with her observations, conversations and impressions upon every sensation she experienced that allowed me to feel as if I were there. As described by Drexler and the leaders of Bhutan that she spoke to, GNH (Gross National Happiness) is an ideal that Bhutan's visionary leaders over the last 40 years have strove to achieve, and while it has yet to be accomplished, its' guiding principles have produced a kinder and gentler population. Drexler had extraordinary access to the driving forces behind GNH, to those who's job it is to implement the various facets necessary to achieve that mission, as well as to the people, young and old, who are the beneficiaries and/or objectors to a government that stresses spiritual happiness over consumerism, self-reliance, and just about every step comprising Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Her people skills in getting her subjects to open up was topped only by her skills as a listener, to what was and was not being said.Clearly, the author went to Bhutan expecting it to be more than a working vacation, but any answers she originally sought appear to have been more elusive than expected and instead gave way to perhaps the deepest, most profound question that faces humankind, which in my own words is: "Can we (and will we) save our species from ourselves?" There are no quick answers and perhaps there can never be a "right" answer, atleast not as long as we remain "human". But Madeline Drexler has brought that question to the forefront at an extremely timely point in modern history. Let's keep the discussion going.

This thoughtful essay offers a wonderful opportunity to see how the lofty ideals of good will, kindliness, and living well actually manifest in the country of Bhutan, even as it is confronted with the challenges of social change.Madeline Drexler's fascination with the question, `How is Gross National Happiness actually possible in the country of Bhutan?' presents both a challenge and a possibility to her reader. While I have historically thought the goal of `gross national happiness' was somewhat saccharine or naieve at best, I was delighted to read how smart and savvy folk are actually implementing public policy according to specific criteria related to the health and well being of the country. No, the process is not easy, and is apparently a constant challenge given the heavily western-influenced changes in that Bhutan is currently experiencing. But what Drexler found and shares with us is how these concerns have been institutionalized into the basic workings of social and governmental life and how specific persons are working with the ongoing challenge of implementation.Who says it isn't possible to change the way we individually and collectively live in our own country? Can we imagine what might be different if we were to change some of our national priorities and dynamics? Yes, it would require a radical shift from our values of individualism, competition and achievement to those of community, wholesome living, and care for the earth and each other. Even the possibility sounds heartening to me.Are we willing to expand our vision for what is possible here? Read the essay and challenge yourself. We don't have to go to Bhutan to be inspired.

#22,689 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This item has a lot of room to write in appointments or achievements. It even has extra pages to write in after each month in case you needed to document anything of importance. It also has a side column to wright in little reminders. I also like the idea that it covers two whole years of calendars. They are also complete calendars not like the ones that are only for a school year at a time. If you no longer have kids that go to school or you don't work for the schools there is a really strong need for the other months not found in a scalar year calendar. So Thanks for still carrying this complete calendar.

Love it! Large pages to be able to make appointments with notes. Like lined note pages on back of each monthly page.

I bought quite a few for family members. Inexpensive, perfectly laid out and pretty to look at.

Great planner with loads of room for notes, etc.

I love this planner..I use it to keep track of my bills and make notes

Perfect replacement

Love it easy to use

Perfect for my needs.
