I find this book very useful to grasp the use of the ST HAL drivers. The book spends quite a bit of time explaining the CubeMX configuration application, seems to cater to the fairly new to embedded programming audience by explaining the simplest of C statements, and does have a little difficulty in some areas, but overall, the book was what I needed. There are some inconsistencies in the book with respect to what you see on the printed code and those that are generated by STM32CubeMX. I think that has more to do with the evolution of the STM32CubeMX evolution than the authors’ attention to detail. The author does discuss "tool chains" which I thought, initially, the intent was to use and open source IDE (such as Eclipse) but the book primarily uses Keil MDK4 (I used MDK5 with no issues) for demonstration of the examples. I have been using Rowley & Associates Crossworks, and many other Eclipse IDE in addition to Keil and have a good understanding of the Cortex M3,M4, M7, and A9, so my goal was to understand how the specifics of how STs’ HAL is used. Individuals just beginning with the ST and the ARM, I can see, could get frustrated as learning C/C++, the ARM, embedded programming, AND, the ST32CubeMX would be somewhat of a challenge. That said this book does help, in my opinion.UPDATE (7/15/2018): As I work my way through some of the later projects, it occurred to me that there are several improvements the author could make to vastly improve this book and, perhaps, address some of the negative reviews. For one, there is not a download site where one could at least obtain the STM32CubeMX project files (*.ioc) to avoid having to guess at the specific setting to match the book, Secondly, the author could highlight the specific changes to the automatically generated code despite the auto generate comments (e.g. /* USER CODE BEGIN */. There are others, and I truly hope the author decides to produce a 2nd edition of the book. This book is one of the most helpful books on the STM32CubeMX usage I'm seen, aside from the ST produced STM32CubeMX documentation. The value of this book over the ST documentation is that it brings you up to speed without having to read lengthy material in the ST documentation reserving the ST documentation for reference. It would be really nice to extend this book with 1) An example CAN application, 2) The hooks to implement printf() handling (pretty simple), 3) a getline() implementation, and perhaps an implementation of the FLEX/BISON parser. These are ambitious goals (that I have been able to solve) that, if you scour the Internet, you will find many advanced soles struggle with these tasks. Incorporation one or more of these solutions would make book much more valuable.My 10 cents worth.

I purchased the Kindle version. This book is poorly written and simply provides example programs for the reader to exercise with only limited explanation. Often key lines of code that the user must insert are not mentioned and only made available to the reader by carefully examining the listing. The listings however are presented as images rather than text which makes them unsearchable. Many images are unreadable even when zoomed in the Kindle app. Also, the listing images are presented in full sometimes taking up several pages while 90% of the listing is the same boilerplate code that is generated each time MxCube is run to generate the code. IMHO, it would be better to just list the pertinent sections and present them in text form, not as an image.

This author has no idea about how to write a book that is understandable, readable by the intended audience.You can call it "getting started" but it's definitely not for novices, to the contrary: you have to have quite a bit of prior knowledge and familiarity with embedded electronics to be able to follow it.I have not enough time to get to all the problems with this style of writing of this type of book so I will just say: not a well written book and don't recommend buying it.

Disappointing and Frustrating.I did find the book somewhat useful to steer me in some vague directions with the examples, but I spent most of my time hunting down the right details to make the examples work. The book seems to be merely a rough draft with semi-functional example projects. If the author posted actual working code on Github or the like, it would go a lot further in my opinion.If I were not an experienced software developer I would have quit on the first example, I think.

About the Author

Interboro is a New York City-based research and design group founded in 2002. It has accumulated many awards for its innovative projects, including the AIA New York Chapter s 2006 New Practices Award, and the Architectural League s 2005 Young Architects Award An installation version of The Arsenal of Exclusion / Inclusion was exhibited in the 2009 International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. Interboro has won the prestigious PS1 Young Architects Program 2011. Main contributors: Alexander D Hooghe is associate professor in Architectural Urbanism at MIT Gerald Frug is the Louis D. Brandeis Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, and a leading academic authority on local government law. Frug has advocated regional cooperation to solve local government problems. Colorful and fun to read, serious and important issues brought in a different way.

They are part of a new generation of cutting edge planning/design firms in New York City that strive to challenge old, outdated theories/assumptions and use research, experimentation as well as community engagement as the underpinnings of their work. This book has interesting and valuable content. Unfortunately, the format of the book makes that content difficult to appreciate, and exhausts the reader's attention very quickly. First of all, there is zero white space in the book, and I am not exaggerating. Every millimeter is filed with images and text, resulting in page after page crammed to the point where it all just becomes a visual blur (see photo of a typical page) and it becomes exhausting to look at more than a few pages at a time--as well as rendering the thought of actually reading the book impossible.But what's noxious about the book is that every aspect of it, from the size to the language to the type face, is suffused with a preciousness and self-referentiality that can best be summarized as "hipsterism." You feel like if you were to question any aspect of it, you would be met with a dissertation about how some 23-year-old "reimagined" what a book could be and "reinvented" how we should process information (if we were only as intellectually savvy as they are!) and, speaking for myself, the response is "That's so great, thanks... now could you just go away?" The point of the book, about urban inclusion and exclusion, is lost in the larger goal of Interboro congratulating itself for being so incredible and insightful as to produce this book.Every entry in the book is accompanied by a little note ABOUT that entry. The book regularly references itself not as "this book" but as "The Arsenal." Entries are accompanied by "Bonus Material" (which may be poems, interviews, lists, mini op-eds) as well as full-spread photos (a curtain in a lower-class neighborhood hangs outside its window... feel the urban decay!), short quotes, period maps and documents... oh, and don't forget the fold-out poster glued into the back cover.The irony is, all of it just makes the book unusable and impossible to read. Each entry has a highlighted section, which will be the only part of each entry that you read, because it is the only thing that stands out among the clutter of the page. Eventually you realize that this is just a high-end coffee table book for savvy architects and those who want to pretend to be them, and it is actually not intended to be read, it is meant to be paged through. And then you wish you had a book on this topic, because it would be very interesting! But this is a "book object" meant to be seen on design-forward bookshelves, not meant to convey any information or insight. If anyone involved in this book actually wanted to convey information about urban planning, they really out-clevered themselves.
