Erling Kagge may be the ultimate challenge-seeker. According to the book’s jacket, Kagge is the first man to have completed the Three Poles Challenge on foot—the North Pole, the South Pole, and the summit of Mount Everest. Wow! I would submit that his greatest challenge however, was the decision to write a book about silence. He obviously experienced a lot of silence when he trekked across Antarctica alone for 50 days. But this isn’t a book about the exploration of remote places. This is a book about the silence within, the kind of silence that is found on a crowded subway or a barren mountaintop. In fact, according to Kagge, you have to find it on the crowded subway. That is life. And that is when you need it most.I completely agree. I lived in China for nine years. Having grown up in a small town in rural America and lived most of my adult life in a house that sat a few thousand meters from its nearest neighbor, I moved to Beijing, a city of 22 million, where personal space is, by necessity, simply non-existent. If you can’t get used to the idea of your face being mere inches away from the face of the stranger standing next to you on a crowded subway, you won’t survive.Looking back, however, learning to live without personal space was more a process of personal liberation than an accommodation to my new reality. Never in my sixty-three years have I learned more about myself or become more comfortable in my own skin. The book is a chronicle of philosophy on the topic of silence. But rather than just summarizing that discussion, Kagge applies it to everything from exploring the underground world of New York City to the appreciation of art and music.Which is pretty bold, when you think about it. He could sell a lot of books merely sharing some of his unusual and exotic tales of adventure. But he doesn’t do that here. He is wagering this book on his ability to share himself at the most intimate level. And I think he is successful. This is a very good book by a very intriguing individual. Silence, as Kagge points out, is all about listening-to self, the people you love, and the world around you. That’s where you find joy and purpose.

We live in a busy world. It's loud, it's chaotic, and it's a non-stop race in one of a million different ways. Everything is connected--and while that proves convenient at times, other times that connectivity thanks to technology creates a huge gap in our lives. I'm a hiker--and I adore the opportunities to go on remote hikes and not encounter other people... as a people person that may seem odd, but it was my way to "get away" and really clear my head. Ironically, I used to hike with any of a number of playlists going, letting the music motivate me. I haven't listened to music on a hike in years.Around the time I gave up on music during hikes and walks, I was turned onto minimalism. While minimalism and silence may not go hand-in-hand, they are both ideas and concepts that have come on with a maturity and better understanding of what is important in the world. I find myself now teaching my daughters about the importance of little things, and how big they can seem and how much we can learn. Looking at two blades of grass on the surface sounds boring, but when you get down to the details it is fascinating. Silence is the same. This book was recommended by my father who is a wise 68. He is one of the wisest people I know--so I bought the book and read it last week. It's a potentially quick read, but that's dangerous. A book like this needs to be taken slowly and digested. Philosophical at it's core, you need to allow yourself the time to really soak up what Kagge is saying... if you can do that, you'll be better for it. You'll appreciate things you never considered before, and life will be richer.

Of the many diverse books I’ve read in my 77 years “Silence...” is the only one I’ve felt compelled to read more than once. The first time, I found it a quick read and it’s 33 short stories exceptionally engaging. I started read two the next day and found myself slowing down to think about each story, to marvel how each one relates to me and my life. I immediately started read three — catch this — at 2:30 in the morning, slowing down automatically as I contemplate what certain elements of each story are telling me where to and how to seek and practice silence in my daily living. And just when I thought I thought I was finished with this little book, l found myself in read number four, as I use “Silence” to help me meditate. Thank you, Erving Kagge. BTW, When one my four children gave me your book as a surprise, she told “Dad, when I read the blurb about it, I knew you’d love it.” I have given seven copies (ordered throughAmazon, ahem) for my children, grandchildren and a dear friend who is the editor of a major US university’s alumni magazine. He emailed me: “Finished chapter one. Can’t put it down. “

A short, powerful book about finding our own quiet space and learning to love existing there. The book is so incredibly silent, almost deafening in its message. The last chapter says it all.

I have purchased several books on this subject and found this one to be the best. One bit of advice, however, order it in hard copy (not Kindle) because you will be working with charts and tables fir which you cannot increase the font and the font showing up on the Kindle will be so small you can't read it without a magnifying glass. Also, you'll need to flip back and forth to some of the tables at the end of the book. Very well written, author knows her stuff. Highly recommend this book to those who are trying to live a good life but keep having childhood abandonment issues influence their thoguhts and choices.

This book takes you to uncomfortable places that we tend to try to pretend didn't happen but this book encourages us to go there for a short time so we can heal from our pasts. It does not leave us in a place of hurts but gently nudges us to be brave and work thru so that we are not stuck in our old behaviors that have molded us but bring us to an even better version of ourselves so we can learn how to act and react in ways we were not taught before. Healthy, productive ways.

A detailed and wonderfully written book. Very helpful with clients.

changed my life. who knew so many of us suffered abandonment.

Great book so far, really hit home. Cried my eyes out the first few chapters. Now I have to read the rest..

The author really has an excellent grasp of the dynamics of a dysfunctional family. She not only helps you to see how your childhood defenses helped you to survive in your family of origin, but she shows you how to heal from the wounds that were created thereby not repeating the same patterns. I highly recommend this book if you came from a dysfunctional family and want to understand what happened.

Book is easy to read, but every page has useful information. I was amazed at how thorough it is in explaining issues. It opened my eyes or clarified what was already tumbling around in my mind. I've read several books on healing from emotional abuse, and I feel this is an excellent resource.

A must read book for adult children raised in dysfunctional families. It was as though someone had seen inside my childhood and written down in a book. I had no idea how non-functional my family was. So many things happened in my family which I had still considered "normal"; but they weren't. It opened my eyes and pointed me towards finishing the past. No longer will my decisions be tainted by my childhood. Thank you Claudia Black!

#31,280 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

What I have to say needs to be heard. I remain aghast and horrified by the comments, insults and worse by the nay-sayers of Alex Berenson's book. This has NOTHING to do with judgement, lifestyle or anything close to that. This has to do with getting out the truth - real and vital information that can save lives and hopefully shed light on the devastation being caused by marijuana use for more individuals than people have any idea. THC assault on the brain is impacting tens of thousands upon thousands of people and many more than that, when you include the concentric circles of families and beyond.I am an educated woman who has been on this journey with my son, now in his late 20’s, for more than 5 years. Some background on my son - he was a standout student/athlete in high school who went on to a top college where he became an All American distance runner his senior year. He had a passion "to make a difference in the world" and wrote his senior thesis on the inequities of our country's education system with plans to pursue his PHD, which his thesis advisor implored him to do. He joined Ameri-Corps and moved out west with his college girlfriend to teach economically disadvantaged children. Everything went well for the first year but sometime during the second year, things started to fall apart. We had no idea he had started smoking marijuana, which he had never used during HS or college. We asked him to come home to see if we could help him and shortly after that, he had his first psychotic break. That was when we found out about his marijuana use. This journey has now been ongoing for over 5 years. Our son has had over 17 hospitalizations, been in long term treatment programs, been committed to two different state mental institutions, been in jail and homeless on the streets. We have had to call 911 more times than we can count. And every time he is released, he resumes his pot use as he cannot fight his addiction, and the descent into delusional psychosis and then full psychotic break ensues. As one doctor so eloquently stated at one point, "pot will always trump everything."I have educated myself through research, attending conferences, speaking to doctor after doctor and meeting family after family on the psych wards. I have met some of the top doctors and psychiatrists in the field of psychosis and marijuana induced psychosis. They all know it; the hospitals, the medical providers, doctors and psychiatrists, and the families affected. But, as Mr. Berenson writes, the reasons this information is not being released in this country are convoluted, complex and driven by profit. I am familiar with many of the research findings Mr. Berenson states in his book. Other countries are light years ahead of us - Finland, Australia, the U.K. - in understanding the connection between marijuana use and psychosis/schizophrenia. The connection between the "predisposed brain" is still not completely understood and more research needs to be done. Mr. Berenson does an outstanding job writing about the history of the plant, the medical protocols surrounding THC and CBD plus the high potency THC of today and what a powerful psychoactive drug it is. His statistics on the relationship with violence is horrifying and well documented. Please everyone wake up, pay attention ... this is REAL! Mr. Berenson has taken a courageous step in exposing hidden truths with the aim to inform, not condemn. As a seasoned reporter who knows how to dig for truth and facts, he has meticulously researched and presented his findings - the history behind marijuana, proven scientific data and personal stories which speak to the truth. The claims by the nay-sayers on the whole "correlation-causation" with no cause-and-effect relationship is like the beginning years of tobacco saying the warnings of nicotine and lung cancer were anecdotal and unfounded. Again, this has nothing to do with anything beyond wanting to expose the truth around marijuana and the brain. I am an open-minded individual who leans primarily liberal on most things. But I am also a mother who has watched her son's life be destroyed and that of her family. The marijuana industry is a multi-billion dollar industry which is being driven by profit over the safety and well-being of human lives. The truth needs to be told.

This book does an excellent job of examining the link between cannabis use, mental illness and violence. Many cannabis advocates claim that cannabis makes you chill, and for many users that is undoubtedly true. But for many other users, it causes paranoia and triggers underlying psychosis which can lead to all manner of bad outcomes including violence. Although the media hasn't really explored the links until this book, it is troubling that many of the most notorious terrorists and mass murderers of our time were heavy cannabis users including Timothy McVeigh, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Denver bomber James Holmes, Jodi Arias, many of the recent terrorists in Europe and many more. You can say that "correlation does not prove causation," but the correlations that his book exposes are too extensive to ignore. It makes a compelling case that more research is required before rushing into commercialization of this drug.Perhaps even more importantly, we are ignoring the negative societal effects of pot use, particularly in vulnerable people and communities. People from solid backgrounds can often smoke pot and still function as productive citizens. These people often don't see the negative effects it has on people and communities without resources and privilege. I went to high school in a rural, lower income town in the 1970's, and 40 years later, everyone I knew who smoked pot in high school is either dead or in a very bad place. You can say "correlation doesn't prove causation" all you want, but you do so at the risk of ignoring the huge amount of evidence and red flags out there.Thank you to the author for being willing to withstand the blowback from cannabis advocates and profiteers who vilify and intimidate anyone who dares to explore the downside of marijuana commercialization. The public needs to know all the facts and more research needs to be done.
