I don’t read books that have a PC agenda and there was nothing to give the reader a heads up. This little boy wants a dad and even asks his mom why his friend can have two dads when he doesn’t have any. I stopped reading right then and removed it from my device.

Great storyline and I can see why all children without a dad, regardless of the reason, would want and need a dad. This was handled well by all characters and it took place a in a loving community.

Anna is a young widow with a 7 year old son, Freddie. They have a been given a wonderful opportunity. They can spend Christmas in a castle. Portions of the castle are open to the public, there are garden tours, during the right seasons produce is for sale, weddings and events can be held at the castle. In short, in order for the survival of the castle as well as the village surrounding the castle, this castle is a business.Freddie is excited to be in the country and outside London. Freddie, Anna and the guinea pig, Ozzie, all move into their temporary home and prepare for the adventure.Freddie has told his mother that for Christmas, he wants a Dad of his own. His uncle cannot be a substitute, he wants his very own Dad. His father died before he was born so he has never known the connection to a man in his life. When they first arrive at the castle, they find friendly employees and friendly villagers. There are people who want to get to know them and make them feel at home. Freddie even has a new friend who is exactly his age.All is going wonderfully, until there is a flood which causes terrible damage in the village and creates problems for people right at Christmas.Anna and Freddie are the main characters in the story. Both of them are well rounded and complete human beings. Freddie is a little boy who acts like a little boy. At times, Anna was problematic for me. I got tired of her dithering. She is an intelligent woman but at times she acts as though it is impossible for her to make a decision. We meet friends from Anna's London life and also employees at the castle and interesting villagers. At the castle, there are 3 men who are charming and friendly to Freddie and he becomes attached to each of them. Simon, Luke and Julius all have their own story. All of them are friendly and all of them are fond of Freddie. In the village there are very entertaining people. We meet, one elderly lady who has a hat for every occasion, a baker who has a portable wedding cake and many people who pull together to help their neighbors who have been affected by the flood damage. The plot moves quickly. I did feel that at times there were events which were thrown in for no particular reason. But,the plot does move forward and the reader moves along to a conclusion which is very satisfying for everyone involved.Basically this is a book about people and life. No one is immune to pain and problems. The good in life is as universal as the not so good. There are events both large and small within the story. It is very much like real life. This is the first book I have read by Ms Howard. She has humor and humanity within this book. Her characters are people who would make good neighbors and good friends.I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley. I am voluntarily writing this review and all opinions are completely my own.

Anna and Daisy drove to the castle Daisy’s aunt and uncle were at. Anna was to decide if she would come and stay here for the month while Daisy’s Aunt Philly and Uncle Sidney could go to Boston for a vacation. Anna had a seven year old son Freddie’s whose dad-Gary had died before he was born. Freddie really wanted to stay at the castle for the month so after seeing it Anna decided to go ahead and agree to stay there. It would be Christmas time at the castle which was an emotional time for Anna. Anna was determined to give Freddie the best time she could. To actually live in the castle would be incredible and would give Freddie a Christmas he would never forget. Philly had explained Christmas was a quiet time at the castle other than a possible wedding or filming. But if Anna and Freddie couldn’t stay a whole month Philly said she would come back from Boston early. They were hopefully leaving December 19th and would be back January 18th. Anna works at a school and Freddie would be back a little late for school and Anna from work. But Anna only worked part time and could easily catch up with her private coaching. But a month in the country would be a good break for Freddie and Anna. Philly had a couple of people that worked on the estate -Cathy and Luke. Luke is very friendly and told Anna they were a friendly crowd working on the estate. A lot of Christmas celebrating and her and Freddie were welcome. Freddie wanted to come here and Anna wasn’t going to disappoint him. Freddie had three godmothers- Daisy, Francy, and Grania and when Grania jokingly asked Freddie what he wanted them to get him for Christmas Freddie seriously answered her with a dad. Luke brought a Christmas tree into the castle that had been grown on the estate. Then he listed the others who helped run the castle and its estate - there was Simon who was in charge of the grounds, Tessa and Nell who did all the administrative work, who had an office in the castle but were only there during the day. Right now Nell and Tessa were away on vacation and would return soon. The last person he mentioned and he said was the most important was Julius who runs everything who was away skiing. There was a flood that destroyed parts of the village and the neighbors came together. After the flood and a few days before Christmas the only really dry place is the castle so the villagers became Anna’s and Freddie’s roommates and they will all spend Christmas together. There are at least three men that could fill Freddie’s Christmas wish.I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun, easy, sweet read. Although at Times I was annoyed with Anna as she seemed to have some problems making decisions. I loved the villagers and how they all came together in the time of the flood and the aftermath including the villagers coming to the castle to stay. There is some repetition I didn't enjoy and this did drag at times. I liked the author’s description of the countryside and the castle itself and I could picture both in my mind’s eye. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this book and I recommend.
