#19,508 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

After reading another autobiography, I felt I needed to read a suspense police procedural or thriller. Then, lo and behold, I found that a book I had pre-ordered appeared on my Kindle this morning. Launched into it several hours ago and found it to be better than some, but not quite hitting every note quite right for my desires in private eye stories. That, however, is getting ahead of the story. Please let me first address some key points:BLUSH FACTOR: It is no big secret that J. K. Rowling writes also as Robert Galbraith. Doing so is a smart move, as it signals that the story is fit more for adults than for kids. And, to be sure, the language and discussions within this epic novel is not the sort recommended for young ears or church prayer groups. There is sexual content but not graphic. Just intimate enough to titillate…The blush factor information is not provided as a complaint, nor as a cause for rating the book four stars instead of five. Rather, because it does so well portray the grittier side of life as I believe it to be for the sorts of characters depicted, I am tempted to raise the rating instead of lower it. Still, I am sure some readers will appreciate the caution.SOUL: Yes, because “Lethal White” does get so deeply into the seedier side of life for the types of characters depicted, one could say it has soul.POV: This story is told to us in third person.THE WRITING FLOW: The flow though out “Lethal White” is easy to read. And faster reading than one might expect from a 600-plus page epic. Some reviewers are sure to complain about the length and the tendency to slow down the pace, but do not count me as one of them. I appreciate the pace-changing that kept me turning the pages. Further, the character development is better than I expected, making the story well worth reading.Excerpt‘…Strike, who had spent large portions of his childhood living in squalor, found a disregard for hygiene hard to like, except in those people so unhappy or ill that cleanliness became an irrelevance.“Ex-army, aren’t you?” she asked, but Jimmy spoke over her.“How did Billy know how to find you?”“Directory inquiries?” suggested Strike. “I don’t live in a bat cave.”“Billy doesn’t know how to use directory inquiries.”“He managed to find my office OK.”“There’s no dead kid,” Jimmy said abruptly. “It’s all in his head. He goes on about it when he’s having an episode. Didn’t you see his tic?”Jimmy imitated, with brutal accuracy, the compulsive nose to chest movement of a twitching hand. Flick laughed.“Yeah, I saw that,” said Strike, unsmiling. “You don’t know where he is, then?”“Haven’t seen him since yesterday morning. What do you want him for?”“Like I say, he didn’t seem in any fit state to be wandering around on his own.”“Very public spirited of you,” said Jimmy. “Rich and famous detective worrying about our Bill.”Strike said nothing.“Army,” Flick repeated, “weren’t you?”“I was,” said Strike, looking down at her. “How’s that relevant?”“Just saying.” She had flushed a little in her righteous anger. “Haven’t always been this worried about people getting hurt, have you?”Strike, who was familiar with people who shared Flick’s views, said nothing. She would probably believe him if he told her he had joined the forces in the hope of bayoneting children.Jimmy, who also seemed disinclined to hear more of Flick’s opinions on the military, said:“Billy’ll be fine. He crashes at ours sometimes, then goes off. Does it all the time.”“Where does he stay when he’s not with you?”“Friends,” said Jimmy, shrugging. “I don’t know all their names.” Then, contradicting himself, “I’ll ring around tonight, make sure he’s OK.”“Right you are,” said Strike, downing his pint and handing the empty to a tattooed bar worker, who was marching through the forecourt, grabbing glasses from all who had finished with them. Strike took a last drag on his cigarette, dropped it to join the thousands of its brethren on the cracked forecourt, ground it out beneath his prosthetic foot, then…’Galbraith, Robert. Lethal White (A Cormoran Strike Novel) (Kindle Locations 1162-1182). Little, Brown and Company. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINETough for me to settle on four stars or five stars. I think if there had been a little humor, even sarcasm, weaved in here and there, this might have touched all the bases for me. Still, I did enjoy the tale.Four stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. I will do likewise with you.Thank you so much for indicating if this review helped you, or for your comment.

This book was a pre-order, set to load on my kindle two days before my birthday. The only complaint I can muster is that I read these books as soon as they are released and then have to wait a year+ for the next one. No spoilers here. I will say that I enjoyed this one just as much as the 1st installment "Cuckoo's Calling". None of the books in this series have been a disappointment but I do have my favorites, of course. I wish that I could write a lengthy review but I just finished reading Lethal White and I'm exhausted. I'm hooked on this series and probably more invested in the eventual outcome for Strike and Robin than I should be. Aaannd now I have to wait a year+ for the next installment.

Disappointed... the last third of the book was pretty good, more like a 4. But in order to get to that you had to suffer over the whole 'Matthew is mean', 'Matthew is a horrible husband.' It got So Old. I hate Matthew. I don't like him as a character, never have. I thought that the first 2/3 of the book focused far too much on the love triangle / rectangle of it all. Also, I thought that the overall plot was... bizarre. I recently watched the Strike TV show (you can get it through iTunes), and while I love the main characters, the plots themselves are so bizarre in general, but this I thought was the Worst of all the plots of the Cormoran Strike books and plots. They only mentioned what a 'lethal white' was once. I think it refers to the painting in question. I hope that the next book is far, far better. Less romance, no Matthew, and less 'my achy leg'. I love the main characters, but this feels like a departure from the earlier books in so many ways. In the end J.K. Rowling says that this book was one of the most complicated and difficult she has ever written... really? This is probably my Least Favorite J.K. Rowling book... ever. All the Harry Potter books I loved - I was never very critical of them, just feasted on them. If this is the most difficult book you've ever written, maybe that's because it wasn't working? Spoilers - I figured out that the son and the mother-in-law were having an affair at least half way through the book, but the other pieces were basically impossible to guess, although I enjoyed the mystery. Also, I was extremely disappointed that the entire beginning of the story, Billy, ended up basically being pointless. I think a plot where the favorite son who died somehow popped up would've been so much better!

this is wonderful songs are easy but challenging and very fun to play

Purchased this for my daughter after she finished Book 1. She is 10 and has been playing the violin since she was 7. Essential Elements for Strings has been helped her learn a lot of music stuff.

I taught myself how to play the violin using this series. It is straightforward and easy to understand. I would highly recommend lessons as well, but this book will teach you all the basic things you need to know.

Essential Elements is what I used to learn music in band as a kid. As an adult I am trying to expand my musical knowledge and this has been a great help! It comes with all kinds of tips and tricks as well as access to their website which gives the lessons online! It is a valuable resource for learning how to play an instrument! I bought all 3 volumes for Violin.

I ordered volume 1-2 of this and also the Suzuki method and u gotta say this is BY FAR the best! I like how I can log into my library online with the activation code on book to play along to songs. Seriously, it's amazing. U can also ordere the cd, but what's the point! Just play it on your iPhone or laptop (I use my iPhone and sound bar via Bluetooth and play along)It's so awesome. I'm 30 and self teaching and I definatelu recommend it

Good instruction book. I started with Book 1 and graduated to Book 2. It has a lot of good instructions and exercises. It is, however a little short on actual musical pieces, so I supplemented it with The ABC's of Violin for the Intermediate which has almost no instruction, but is loaded with sheet music. A good combo.

This book and the ones in the series are just great for beginners! I took a few violin lessons but I am basically having to teach myself. Easy to follow and the CD is great! If you are new to the violin, get a book with a CD. I'm still on book #1 and have been for the past 2 months. I finally busted out the CD and wow, why didn't I do it sooner! So helpful to hear the music and then play along and alone. Helps a lot and you really start to learn how to train your ear. I would highly recommend this book and #1 and 3 in the series.

I wanted to learn to play violin and cant afford lessons so I bought both these books. They were very helpful. My violin I bought from cicilio came with a book but it was to hard for an an absalute beginner. These books are great for some one self teaching.

Good book with plenty of songs. We are about to order the CD to accompany it, as it doesn't come with it, but you can either download it, order it online or use the postcard to order it (for the price of postage). The CD's contents are on the book's back cover. My son will need this for school next year, so having it for the summer to practice with will only help!

Review

“…Gaby’s story is vividly told with a strong voice and a great story arc that begins with her parents and ends with a call to other teens and adults to stop the cycle of teen pregnancy, motherhood and poverty. THE PREGNANCY PROJECT is not just a good read, but an important one as well.” – BookReporter.com

This seems like an ideal book to have students read in a debate class. There have been plenty of discussions regarding the ethics of what Gaby did, but I personally feel she made a great contribution to non-fiction teen literature. The harassment that her boyfriend (Jorge) had to endure really did highlight reasons why boys leave teen moms. If anything, this book shows that we as a society contribute greatly to the problems of pregnant teens. There is a place between celebrating teen moms (via shows like Teen Mom) and casting them out in the streets and treating them like garbage. We need to be more supportive of our girls and give them confidence they will need in order to be good mothers. One of the characters I was most conflicted about in this book was Gaby's sister, Jessica. At first, I really disliked her for what she put Gaby through when she was younger. But, during the project, Jessica was one of her few allies. I think that through the pregnancy, Jessica changed for the better. Instead of rubbing Gaby's face in her mistake, she showed support for Gaby that Jessica herself did not receive when she was pregnant.

As a high school counselor, I absolutely enjoyed this book. Teen pregnancy occurs every year in high school and this book appropriately address the importance of protection and abstinence, but also how to help lift up people when they are already in a situation they cannot change. Apart from the topic of teen pregnancy, the book addresses stereotypes and questions why we stereotype people, how we need to lift others up and be a part of the solution and not the problem. Very empowering and encouraging to see what our youth can accomplish.

Fun. quick read. interesting that it's based on high school, but adults can learn to: NOT TO JUDGE. Also, it taught me to think about the feelings of those teens who are pregnant.

The book is something a teenager could relate to. It brings back those harsh memories in high school where you didnt really fit in, or felt alone. The stereotypes, rumors, and hurtful words that are said in the hallways, classrooms, facebook and twitter really do get to you. Those words hurt. I will never understand why people speak so badly of people they don't know, or backstab their bestfriend of so many years. It takes a lot for me to sit still long enough to read a book for 20 minutes, but i did love this book, and managed to sit a couple hours. It's a story of this girls life, her background, her history. This girl, like everyone else, has a story to tell. Get to know the people around you before you talk a word about others, because people can suprise you. This book is a great way to understand someone who has so little, and breaks those stereotypes, racial comments, and the bad reputation a person can have in high school. <3

I was intrigued by the concept of this book and anxious to see if it would be appropriate for my high school library. I am happy to report that I found it well-written and thoughtful. Gaby is very believable in explaining how she came up with the idea for the pregnancy project, how it turned out to be more difficult and painful than she anticipated, and how she coped with the totally unexpected and overwhelming media reaction.

I absolutely loved this book. It gave me a whole new outlook on just about everything. I learned that judging a book by its cover, is never ok. And that you never know what someone's background is. I definitely recommend this book for everyone! Such a great story to be heard.

This is a really great and inspiring story. I read this for a school project and it's one of the few books for school that I read that's not horribly boring. There are parents and few friends saying this book isn't appropriate for my kids my age. I'm an incoming freshman. They are very wrong. Kids my age and probably younger need to be educated more on this subject. In the book she talks about how her mom got pregnant and dropped out at my age. Her mom's not the first person in the world to have to go through that. That fact alone is enough reason why younger kids need to read this book and know about this stuff. I recommend this book to everyone.

Great condition ... school project
