Review

“Filled with information, activities, skills, and insights for kids, this book puts some fun into coping with the struggles that accompany ADHD. I will be recommending this book to parents and kids who are trying to overcome the obstacles of ADHD.”―Dr. Robert Leahy, Author of The Worry Cure “Kids with ADHD, along with their parents, teachers, and counselors, will find much to like and learn from in this valuable (and fun!) book filled with practical information, games, and exercises. Among its best features: accessible tools for self-understanding, helping kids to see themselves in a new, positive light―along with ways to work on making their lives easier and more rewarding. The "strengths-based," uplifting approach builds on solid research that not only counteracts the stigma of "having a problem" but also shows a clear path forward.”―Daniel Keating, Author of Born Anxious: The Lifelong Impact of Early Life Adversity―and How to Break the Cycle, and Professor of Psychology, University of Michigan “As a learning disability specialist, I have seen dozens of books on the topic of ADHD, but I now have found the one that I know myself and my team of experts will all use. I highly recommend this book to educators, parents, grandparents, and especially to the kids! It’s time to thrive with ADHD!”―Farryl Dickter, MA, CCC-SLP, ET/P, Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist & Professional Educational Therapist “This book is a great resource for children with ADHD and their families. It is accessible, educational, and includes many thought-provoking activities that can help kids succeed and feel more confident. I appreciate the humor, personal perspective, and the strength-based approach of this workbook. I will be recommending it to families!”―Joshua Mandelberg, MD, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician “It took me two decades to learn how to turn the challenge of my childhood ADHD into my greatest strength. Through engaging games and powerful mindfulness practices, Kelli helps children learn self-regulation while having fun. Children learn both to view their condition in a positive light as well as effective organizational skills. I only wish your workbook was available when I was a child.”―Pejman Katiraei, DO, Fellow of the American Board of Pediatrics and Founder of Wholistic Kids and Families “I always advise starting treatment with behavioral interventions. Some parents struggle to find the right book to help them develop a behavioral parenting plan, but now they have the perfect book! Thriving with ADHD makes the concepts clear, makes planning easy and fun, and is a great starting point for any parent working on a behavioral approach to helping their child.”―Keith Seibert, MD Pediatrician “A must for any child in your life facing an ADHD diagnosis. The activities in this book are essential for any parent, therapist, or educator interested in helping children learn skills to help them thrive with ADHD.”―Katherine Woodward Thomas, NY Times Bestselling Author of Conscious Uncoupling: 5 Steps to Living Happily Even After “Kelli transforms the ever-dreaded diagnosis of ADHD into a “glass half-full” rather than a “glass half-empty” experience by demonstrating the positive aspects of the condition. She teaches 60 self-help activities, easily applicable in all areas of a child’s life. Kelli brings a wealth of personal and professional experience to the table with a friendly and readable style. Thank you, Kelli, for providing this much-needed toolbox for kids!”―Debra Mandel, Ph.D., Psychologist, Author, and TV/Radio Personality "Thriving with ADHD is a resource that I will be recommending to my patients and their families. Miller adroitly manages to combine compassion, creativity, and ingenuity in her writing while keeping the exercises fun and engaging for her real audience―kids with ADHD. This resource will go a long way in encouraging the uniqueness of every child and fostering confidence in overcoming the challenges that ADHD can pose."―Sari Shepphird, PhD, Psychologist and Award-winning Author

Ignore Crystal Selph review. You could easily do this book with a five year old. Ages seven or eight could probably do this on their own. This book is a crystal explanation of ADHD and is full of esteem-building and coping activities. I am going out on a limb here but I think it is almost a crime NOT to get this into the hands of any ADHD child. Well, at least, it would be a crying shame.

I got this book for my daughter to use as a tool for her ADHD/ADD and Anxiety combined, particularly in school where she has the most issues. I must say it is beautifully illustrated, written and published. The language is easy to understand and my 5th grader had no problem navigating the book by herself. This is about the 3rd workbook I brought of the 100s I researched and it has by far been the best. I love the positive and empowering tone of the book. The activities engage the child, builds understanding, skills, self awareness and consciousness. I left in on kitchen counter and by the time I went to tell my daughter about it she had already picked it up, looked through it and was looking forward to working on it. We have done some pages together but she is able to self guide and direct herself. If she is in school and struggling she finds the section related to her current issue and either completes the pages or reviews them. It has helped her focus better just in that she wants to get her class work done so that she can use the free time to work on the Workbook. She has already asked for a second one to refill once she complete this one. To be honest as an adult the struggle with ADHD/ADD combined I almost want to get a copy for myself. I would recommend this book to anyone that ha a child with ADHD or ADD, especially if that child is struggling with the self image from it. This book will definitely empower them.

*Update*We finished this book in just a few days! She could not put it down, we loved it!I was a little concerned that it was too advanced for my child when we first started it. Some of the paragraphs are lengthy and its hard enough to hold an ADHD child's attention. But I was wrong. While she may skim through a longer paragraph here and there, I remind her it's important to get all the information so we can better understand. She hesitates then goes back and reads it or allows me to read it aloud. She is really benefiting from this book! She looks forward to doing it every night in her bed with me. And its not too advanced for her. (She is 8.) We are flying through it! Its really that interesting to her.

This workbook is amazing, I never leave reviews. I have a 10 year old son with adhd who loves Garfield. Every night he looks forward to bedtime when we go over a couple of pages of this together; he says he loves it more than reading Garfield. I can see it boosting his self esteem and helping him feel more “normal” considering he feels very different. I’m so grateful to the author. Thank you.

The book is great for parents however as a professional, I needed a book to work with students and there are no reprintables.

This book is amazing! I skipped much of the first chapter. My daughter and I enjoyed doing the second chapter together.(she’s 8) It really boosted her self esteem and brought the two of us closer. She really understands herself more and has more confidence in her abilities.

Great resource, but don't buy the Kindle version if you plan on using this with students.

I have two, possibly 3, children that have ADHD. They have enjoyed doing the 1st section so far and we all alhave learned more about what ADHD is. I am excited for them to get to some actvivites I perused through. Colorful pages. Very informative that all age levels (from about 2 grade as the lowest) to adults to understand.

Considering how features of a phone can vary from model to model or production run to production this book really doesn't address how manufacturers implement comms on a phone. Maybe Bluetooth basics is decent, but the rest? You're better off at forum.nokia.com or [...] forums to get things working. I really never found anything in this book that helped me. For instance, IrDA programming. The whole section is IrDA basics, I don't want the basics! I want to know the silly stuff Symbian does.......

This book may be of value if you are trying to get two Symbian devices to communicate. But if you need to communidate with another OS, it is sorely lacking. The book leaves out very critical info on using RNetDatabase in order to be discovered. It also glosses over actual data exchange not realizing that RecvOneOrMore() is not supported on some devices. As bad as the Symbian SDK documentation is, this book does nothing to add to it.Don't waste your money.

The Man Who Knew Everything is an illustrated biography of Athanasius Kircher aimed at younger readers. Written by Marilee Peters, the prose is informal and interesting. Kircher lived an incredible life which almost defies belief (when faced with a devastating volcanic eruption, he decides to pay a local guide to help him up the mountain and lower him into the vent so he could observe and take samples). Unsurprisingly, he nearly died.He was a polymath, with a wide interest in a huge variety of subjects. His known written works include treatises (not always accurate) on Egyptian hieroglyphics, natural history, mathematics, physics, medicine, language, geology, music theory and many other subjects. The art for this short book (61 pages) is by Roxanna Bikadoroff and plays up the fantastic elements of Kircher's life. There are period woodcuts juxtaposed with charming pen and ink and colorized maps which add a lot to the narrative. There are also sidebars with highlight information from Kircher's life and the social and scientific upheaval of the mid 17th century. At the end of the book are good references for further reading along with an index and maps and timelines with interesting points about Kircher and his journeys. All in all, a worthwhile biography for young readers about a formerly obsolete scientist who deserves more modern interest.Four starsDisclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher.

'The Man Who Knew Everything: The Strange Life of Athanasius Kircher' by Marilee Peters with illustrations by Roxanna Bikadoroff is a weird ride through the life of a curious character.Kircher had a museum filled with oddities and inventions. His life was full of curiosity and adventure. He wanted to know more about volcanos, so he was lowered in to one. He made many scientific theories about the world around him (most of them wrong). He lived in the 17th century and was a Jesuit at a time when many of the things he wrote about could have gotten him in trouble with the church.I'd never heard of this man, but apparently there are fans of his in the modern age, and even a museum with some recreations of his adventures. On the one hand, he comes across as a blow hard and a fraud, but on the other hand, he seems to be very curious about the world he lives in. I found it a really fun read, and I loved the illustrations by Roxanna Bikadoroff.I received a review copy of this ebook from Annick Press Ltd. and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

I enjoyed this book. The artwork is great (illustrator Roxanna Bikadoroff) and the information interesting (author Marilee Peters). I’ve read a lot of history of science books and never came across Athanasius Kircher. He didn’t really fit into the scientific revolution and Peters very carefully points out how the study of science has changed since Kircher’s time. Nonetheless, Kircher’s curiosity about the world was phenomenal. Overall this is a fun read.Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley for review purposes.

The Brain: The Story of You by David Eagleman“The Brain" is an excellent companion piece to the six-part PBS series of the same title. Neuroscientist and best-selling author David Eagleman, educates and fascinates the general public with a wonderful popular-science examination of our brains. This captivating 224-page book includes the following six chapters: 1. Who am I?, 2. What is reality?, 3. Who’s in control?,4. How do I decide?, 5. Do I need you?, and 6. Who will we be?.Positives:1. Popular science at its best. Accessible, enlightening and fun to read.2. The fascinating topic of neuroscience in the masterful hands of David Eagleman.3. Full of colorful illustrations that complement the excellent narrative.4. Eagleman’s writing style is easy on the “brain”. His goal is to educate the general public and he succeeds.5. Full of interesting facts spruced throughout the book. “As many as two million new connections, or synapses, are formed every second in an infant’s brain. By age two, a child has over one hundred trillion synapses, double the number an adult has.”6. A good description of the teen’s brain. “Beyond social awkwardness and emotional hypersensitivity, the teen brain is set up to take risks.”7. Goes over some of the keys components of the brain. “The scientists were particularly interested in a small area of the brain called the hippocampus – vital for memory, and, in particular, spatial memory.”8. Includes interesting stories. The story of Charles Whitman is quite enlightening with major repercussions on a society that values evidence.9. Describes how memories are formed. “Our past is not a faithful record. Instead it’s a reconstruction, and sometimes it can border on mythology. When we review our life memories, we should do so with the awareness that not all the details are accurate.”10. Describes some of the tools of a neuroscientist. “One way to measure that is with electroencephalography (EEG), which captures a summary of billions of neurons firing by picking up weak electrical signals on the outside of the skull.”11. Considers important philosophical questions. Does the idea of an immaterial soul reconcile with neuroscientific evidence? Find out.12. Describes reality. “One way to measure that is with electroencephalography (EEG), which captures a summary of billions of neurons firing by picking up weak electrical signals on the outside of the skull.” “Everything you experience – every sight, sound, smell – rather than being a direct experience, is an electrochemical rendition in a dark theater.” “The slice of reality that we can see is limited by our biology.”13. Describes consciousness. “…the conscious you is only the smallest part of the activity of your brain. Your actions, your beliefs and your biases are all driven by networks in your brain to which you have no conscious access.” “I think of consciousness as the CEO of a large sprawling corporation, with many thousands of subdivisions and departments all collaborating and interacting and competing in different ways.”14. Describes how the brain decides. “It’s easy to think about the brain commanding the body from on high – but in fact the brain is in constant feedback with the body.”15. An interesting look at willpower. “…willpower isn’t something that we just exercise – it’s something we deplete.”16. A look at social neuroscience. “Our social skills are deeply rooted in our neural circuitry – and understanding this circuitry is the basis of a young field of study called social neuroscience.”17. A fascinating look at Syndrome E and its repercussions. “Syndrome E is characterized by a diminished emotional reactivity, which allows repetitive acts of violence.” “Genocide is only possible when dehumanization happens on a massive scale, and the perfect tool for this job is propaganda.”18. A look at the future of neuroscience. “The secret to understanding our success – and our future opportunity – is the brain’s tremendous ability to adjust, known as brain plasticity.”19. Can consciousness be uploaded? Find out.20. A helpful glossary of terms.Negatives:1. As expected, a book this succinct will leave some interesting neuroscientific topics on the table. The topic of free will gets shortchanged.2. A book intended for the general public and a companion piece no less, will lack depth.3. The eBook edition has some glitches, as an example, extra blank pages inserted.4. Endnotes included but no formal bibliography. In summary, this book exemplifies my love for science. Eagleman is a master of his craft and a skilled writer. He covers complex topics on the neuroscience with ease and provides the general public with an appetizer of knowledge. Neuroscience is a fascinating field in it is infancy and Eagleman successfully whets the public’s interest. I highly recommend it!Further recommendations: “Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain” by the same author, “How to Create a Mind” and “The Singularity is Near” by Ray Kurzwell, “Who’s in Charge?” by Michael S. Gazzaniga, “The Human Brain Book” by Rita Carter, “The Tell-Tale Brain” by V.S. Ramachandran, “Hallucinations” and “The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat” by Oliver Sacks, “A Whole New Mind” by Daniel H. Pink, “In Search of Memory” by Eric R. Kandel, “Self Comes to Mind” by Antonio Damasio, and “The Mind” edited by John Brockman.

The most fascinating book about what makes us who we are since Carl Sagan's "Dragons of Eden". "The Brain" is not to be compared with Sagan/s book. Sagan was an astrophysicist excited about all natural things. "The Brain" is so intensely interesting, more so because the author, David Eagleman is a neurophysicist, with a deep understand of the physical properties and activities of the brain, and how it works. Eagleman puts forth amazing facts about the workings of an organ most of us seldom think about. I will reread it soon, because there is so much to understand.I would advise anyone considering reading this, that it is not a textbook. Eagleman is a very good writer. The book reads itself to you.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. I often get bored with a book and don't finish, but this kept my interest. Eagleman does such a great job of explaining himself that you don't have to be a scientist to understand it. This book made so much sense and it answered those questions that you have wondered your whole life. I highlighted much of it and find myself rereading parts. I would recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in why human beings act the way they do.

It's like reading Porth's book on Pathophysiology of Diseases of the brain but MUCH MORE easier to chew. It's like a really good small sugary snack compared to a huge meal with tons of protein. In other words, it's digestible and fun to read compared to text books I am forced to read

Most of the information given in this book was already in the authors previous book, however this book is precious because it contains a philosophical approach to the neuroscience and new technologies can come to life based on it.The author is a neuroscientist, that's why I believe everything written about neuroscience is true but out of his field there are wrong (at least open to argument ) data. For example "brains in vats" argument doesn't not belong to Rene Descartes. It belongs to another philosopher Hilary Putnam. ( Descartes' argument on the same subject was a demon making humans dream whatever he wants). The book also upset me as a Turkish reader by presenting genocide claims against Turks as historical truth.Despite these points I liked the book and it can be considered as mind opening.

This is a book for beginners. If you've never read anything on neuroscience before, this book is an amazing first step -- especially if you read it while watching (or after you've watched) David Eagleman's TV Series, "The Brain".If you are a professor or student looking for new ways to teach, new examples and engaging stories, or new lines of thought to deliver neuroscientific contents, this book may also be interesting for you -- yet, less so. This was my case. For those who are already familiar with neuroscientific concepts and just want an update on cutting edge neuroscientific research, there's really nothing new here. So, considering that this is a book obviously written for beginners, I give 5 stars.

an excellent book for those interested the less considered aspects of how our brains work. I saw two programs of David Eagleman on PBS which prompted me to purchase this book. In my library, I have a couple of shelves on the brain, as well as years of collected articles. (Having a brain tumor has added to my interest) This is a most unusual presentation. Maybe wath his PBS presentation to see if this sparks your interest.

Every page, opens new thoughts, New possibilities. I never dreamt of the things that are now possible. The future holds the most exciting growth in what our bodies are capable of. I wish I could live another 100 years to see it all happen.

"Superb . . . Thought-provoking, distressing, shockingly tense, and always very sad, it is surely one of the best documentaries of the year."  —Time Out on the documentary"Potent mix of suspense, pathos, and indignation."  —Variety on the documentary"Freeth lays bare a beautiful but lawless land fouled by fear. A 'Clockwork Orange' state where racism, greed and violence are ultimately humbled by almost unimaginable courage. Richly described, bravely chronicled and utterly compelling."  —Mike Thompson, BBC Radio's Foreign Affairs Correspondent

I expected that a person on the wrong end of land reform would be anti-Mugabe, but I was hoping that I'd get a more balanced analysis of what is an unfortunate, but actually a predictable, problem for a nation that fought successfully to rid itself of British colonialism. In a country where the white invaders (representing 3% of the population) owned 80% of the best farmland at liberation, what are the new leaders to do to right the wrongs of history? It appears the leaders realized that maintaining the status quo would guarantee an ungovernable mess for decades, perhaps centuries! That why they negotiated compensation by Britain and the US for white land-owners who would cede the land. Unfortunately, they both reneged. Hence the mess. I would have thought that even a white farmer in these circumstances could see some of the difficulty this posed for the country. Instead Freeth goes on in what is essentially a rant, that at the end of the day exposes all the reasons why it's best for these remnants of colonialism ought to move on: He hates the people, their culture and religion. He thinks that the white farmers are superior and the salvation of the country, i.e that they are doing a great service to the country that could not otherwise be done without them. These are colonial attitudes. It seems ironic that the atrocities that Freeth decries are the same types of atrocities that resulted in his and other white farmers getting the land in the first place! Where was the outrage from his ilk when the British were terrorizing the native people and taking their land? Clearly, he has a severe blind spot. While 2 wrongs do not make a right, all things considered, it seems best that he moves on and let the Zimbabweans govern their country and succeed or fail as they will. He should seek compensation from the colonizer.

Padded with too many extraneous and meandering anecdotes that snuff all momentum. It's an important story, and worth skimming or reading casually over the course of a few months (intensive reading will cause migraines). The author is a nice and sincere guy but his editor is a hack. Recommended for students of Zimbabwe's current affairs only. Casual readers should check out one of Peter Godwin's books instead.

The horrors of what is happening to the white farmers in Zimbabwe has been made possibleby the courage of Ben, Laura, Mike and Angela. These two families, along with thousands ofwhite commercial farmers lost their farms, homes, personal possessions, machinery, animals, so that the ZANU-PF cronies of Mugabe could move in, and steal without payinga cent. Property title deeds and the rule of law are non-existent. The invasions alsoaffected the farm workers who also were evicted to become jobless and destitute with nofuture. To understand the real horrors that are happening in Zimbabwe, I recommend that youwatch the documentary on the white farm invasions "Mugabe and the white african"before you read the book.

Ben Freeth's powerful and gripping book leaves me speechless. Compelling reading. The relentless brutality and horror of the Mugabe regime, and the magnitude of the suffering is in stark contrast to the courage and perseverance of the Campbell and Freeth families and countless Zimbabwean farmers. I am humbled by their testimony and the pleas for justice. The awful truth of this book is that the atrocities continue. Where is the outcry from our "democratic" governments? We have much to learn from this extraordinary book. What remains with me, night and day, greater than the unspeakable suffering and pain, is a powerful testimony to the amazing power of God.

Amazing and insightful. Little is known about the trials and and atrocities committed by Mugabe's government against the Whites in the country. Whites dont seem to generate the same amount of interest or protection of their human rights as do the Blacks. Well worth reading and becoming more aware of what is going on in Zimbabwe and the torture , rape and pillaging the Whites are experiencing in this day and age of democracy and human rights. Well written in an unemotional and factual way by Ben Freeth who has personally lived through it all.

I enjoyed this because it was a true experience of life for white people in Zimbabwae and gave an appreciation of the corruption to people that seek power for themselves. It leaves a feeling of sadness and disgust when this country was so prosperous and a great producer for export and is now a poverty stricken backwater. This is a good testimony of the true life experiences for those white people caught in the Magabe trap.

A truthful account of what's been happening in Zimbabwe over the past 10+ years, and continues to take place unabated under the noses of the international community, who idly stand by and watch a nation brought to ruin by a demented power-hungry leader. No matter your race or religion this is a worthwhile read to understand why Mugabe has done what he has to the people he supposedly fought for - it was definitely an eye-opener for me, an offspring of the Rhodesian soil.

Provides a great insight into the problems that many proud Zimbabweans
