Review

"Superb . . . Thought-provoking, distressing, shockingly tense, and always very sad, it is surely one of the best documentaries of the year."  —Time Out on the documentary"Potent mix of suspense, pathos, and indignation."  —Variety on the documentary"Freeth lays bare a beautiful but lawless land fouled by fear. A 'Clockwork Orange' state where racism, greed and violence are ultimately humbled by almost unimaginable courage. Richly described, bravely chronicled and utterly compelling."  —Mike Thompson, BBC Radio's Foreign Affairs Correspondent

I expected that a person on the wrong end of land reform would be anti-Mugabe, but I was hoping that I'd get a more balanced analysis of what is an unfortunate, but actually a predictable, problem for a nation that fought successfully to rid itself of British colonialism. In a country where the white invaders (representing 3% of the population) owned 80% of the best farmland at liberation, what are the new leaders to do to right the wrongs of history? It appears the leaders realized that maintaining the status quo would guarantee an ungovernable mess for decades, perhaps centuries! That why they negotiated compensation by Britain and the US for white land-owners who would cede the land. Unfortunately, they both reneged. Hence the mess. I would have thought that even a white farmer in these circumstances could see some of the difficulty this posed for the country. Instead Freeth goes on in what is essentially a rant, that at the end of the day exposes all the reasons why it's best for these remnants of colonialism ought to move on: He hates the people, their culture and religion. He thinks that the white farmers are superior and the salvation of the country, i.e that they are doing a great service to the country that could not otherwise be done without them. These are colonial attitudes. It seems ironic that the atrocities that Freeth decries are the same types of atrocities that resulted in his and other white farmers getting the land in the first place! Where was the outrage from his ilk when the British were terrorizing the native people and taking their land? Clearly, he has a severe blind spot. While 2 wrongs do not make a right, all things considered, it seems best that he moves on and let the Zimbabweans govern their country and succeed or fail as they will. He should seek compensation from the colonizer.

Padded with too many extraneous and meandering anecdotes that snuff all momentum. It's an important story, and worth skimming or reading casually over the course of a few months (intensive reading will cause migraines). The author is a nice and sincere guy but his editor is a hack. Recommended for students of Zimbabwe's current affairs only. Casual readers should check out one of Peter Godwin's books instead.

The horrors of what is happening to the white farmers in Zimbabwe has been made possibleby the courage of Ben, Laura, Mike and Angela. These two families, along with thousands ofwhite commercial farmers lost their farms, homes, personal possessions, machinery, animals, so that the ZANU-PF cronies of Mugabe could move in, and steal without payinga cent. Property title deeds and the rule of law are non-existent. The invasions alsoaffected the farm workers who also were evicted to become jobless and destitute with nofuture. To understand the real horrors that are happening in Zimbabwe, I recommend that youwatch the documentary on the white farm invasions "Mugabe and the white african"before you read the book.

Ben Freeth's powerful and gripping book leaves me speechless. Compelling reading. The relentless brutality and horror of the Mugabe regime, and the magnitude of the suffering is in stark contrast to the courage and perseverance of the Campbell and Freeth families and countless Zimbabwean farmers. I am humbled by their testimony and the pleas for justice. The awful truth of this book is that the atrocities continue. Where is the outcry from our "democratic" governments? We have much to learn from this extraordinary book. What remains with me, night and day, greater than the unspeakable suffering and pain, is a powerful testimony to the amazing power of God.

Amazing and insightful. Little is known about the trials and and atrocities committed by Mugabe's government against the Whites in the country. Whites dont seem to generate the same amount of interest or protection of their human rights as do the Blacks. Well worth reading and becoming more aware of what is going on in Zimbabwe and the torture , rape and pillaging the Whites are experiencing in this day and age of democracy and human rights. Well written in an unemotional and factual way by Ben Freeth who has personally lived through it all.

I enjoyed this because it was a true experience of life for white people in Zimbabwae and gave an appreciation of the corruption to people that seek power for themselves. It leaves a feeling of sadness and disgust when this country was so prosperous and a great producer for export and is now a poverty stricken backwater. This is a good testimony of the true life experiences for those white people caught in the Magabe trap.

A truthful account of what's been happening in Zimbabwe over the past 10+ years, and continues to take place unabated under the noses of the international community, who idly stand by and watch a nation brought to ruin by a demented power-hungry leader. No matter your race or religion this is a worthwhile read to understand why Mugabe has done what he has to the people he supposedly fought for - it was definitely an eye-opener for me, an offspring of the Rhodesian soil.

Provides a great insight into the problems that many proud Zimbabweans
