The Brain: The Story of You by David Eagleman“The Brain" is an excellent companion piece to the six-part PBS series of the same title. Neuroscientist and best-selling author David Eagleman, educates and fascinates the general public with a wonderful popular-science examination of our brains. This captivating 224-page book includes the following six chapters: 1. Who am I?, 2. What is reality?, 3. Who’s in control?,4. How do I decide?, 5. Do I need you?, and 6. Who will we be?.Positives:1. Popular science at its best. Accessible, enlightening and fun to read.2. The fascinating topic of neuroscience in the masterful hands of David Eagleman.3. Full of colorful illustrations that complement the excellent narrative.4. Eagleman’s writing style is easy on the “brain”. His goal is to educate the general public and he succeeds.5. Full of interesting facts spruced throughout the book. “As many as two million new connections, or synapses, are formed every second in an infant’s brain. By age two, a child has over one hundred trillion synapses, double the number an adult has.”6. A good description of the teen’s brain. “Beyond social awkwardness and emotional hypersensitivity, the teen brain is set up to take risks.”7. Goes over some of the keys components of the brain. “The scientists were particularly interested in a small area of the brain called the hippocampus – vital for memory, and, in particular, spatial memory.”8. Includes interesting stories. The story of Charles Whitman is quite enlightening with major repercussions on a society that values evidence.9. Describes how memories are formed. “Our past is not a faithful record. Instead it’s a reconstruction, and sometimes it can border on mythology. When we review our life memories, we should do so with the awareness that not all the details are accurate.”10. Describes some of the tools of a neuroscientist. “One way to measure that is with electroencephalography (EEG), which captures a summary of billions of neurons firing by picking up weak electrical signals on the outside of the skull.”11. Considers important philosophical questions. Does the idea of an immaterial soul reconcile with neuroscientific evidence? Find out.12. Describes reality. “One way to measure that is with electroencephalography (EEG), which captures a summary of billions of neurons firing by picking up weak electrical signals on the outside of the skull.” “Everything you experience – every sight, sound, smell – rather than being a direct experience, is an electrochemical rendition in a dark theater.” “The slice of reality that we can see is limited by our biology.”13. Describes consciousness. “…the conscious you is only the smallest part of the activity of your brain. Your actions, your beliefs and your biases are all driven by networks in your brain to which you have no conscious access.” “I think of consciousness as the CEO of a large sprawling corporation, with many thousands of subdivisions and departments all collaborating and interacting and competing in different ways.”14. Describes how the brain decides. “It’s easy to think about the brain commanding the body from on high – but in fact the brain is in constant feedback with the body.”15. An interesting look at willpower. “…willpower isn’t something that we just exercise – it’s something we deplete.”16. A look at social neuroscience. “Our social skills are deeply rooted in our neural circuitry – and understanding this circuitry is the basis of a young field of study called social neuroscience.”17. A fascinating look at Syndrome E and its repercussions. “Syndrome E is characterized by a diminished emotional reactivity, which allows repetitive acts of violence.” “Genocide is only possible when dehumanization happens on a massive scale, and the perfect tool for this job is propaganda.”18. A look at the future of neuroscience. “The secret to understanding our success – and our future opportunity – is the brain’s tremendous ability to adjust, known as brain plasticity.”19. Can consciousness be uploaded? Find out.20. A helpful glossary of terms.Negatives:1. As expected, a book this succinct will leave some interesting neuroscientific topics on the table. The topic of free will gets shortchanged.2. A book intended for the general public and a companion piece no less, will lack depth.3. The eBook edition has some glitches, as an example, extra blank pages inserted.4. Endnotes included but no formal bibliography. In summary, this book exemplifies my love for science. Eagleman is a master of his craft and a skilled writer. He covers complex topics on the neuroscience with ease and provides the general public with an appetizer of knowledge. Neuroscience is a fascinating field in it is infancy and Eagleman successfully whets the public’s interest. I highly recommend it!Further recommendations: “Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain” by the same author, “How to Create a Mind” and “The Singularity is Near” by Ray Kurzwell, “Who’s in Charge?” by Michael S. Gazzaniga, “The Human Brain Book” by Rita Carter, “The Tell-Tale Brain” by V.S. Ramachandran, “Hallucinations” and “The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat” by Oliver Sacks, “A Whole New Mind” by Daniel H. Pink, “In Search of Memory” by Eric R. Kandel, “Self Comes to Mind” by Antonio Damasio, and “The Mind” edited by John Brockman.

The most fascinating book about what makes us who we are since Carl Sagan's "Dragons of Eden". "The Brain" is not to be compared with Sagan/s book. Sagan was an astrophysicist excited about all natural things. "The Brain" is so intensely interesting, more so because the author, David Eagleman is a neurophysicist, with a deep understand of the physical properties and activities of the brain, and how it works. Eagleman puts forth amazing facts about the workings of an organ most of us seldom think about. I will reread it soon, because there is so much to understand.I would advise anyone considering reading this, that it is not a textbook. Eagleman is a very good writer. The book reads itself to you.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. I often get bored with a book and don't finish, but this kept my interest. Eagleman does such a great job of explaining himself that you don't have to be a scientist to understand it. This book made so much sense and it answered those questions that you have wondered your whole life. I highlighted much of it and find myself rereading parts. I would recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in why human beings act the way they do.

It's like reading Porth's book on Pathophysiology of Diseases of the brain but MUCH MORE easier to chew. It's like a really good small sugary snack compared to a huge meal with tons of protein. In other words, it's digestible and fun to read compared to text books I am forced to read

Most of the information given in this book was already in the authors previous book, however this book is precious because it contains a philosophical approach to the neuroscience and new technologies can come to life based on it.The author is a neuroscientist, that's why I believe everything written about neuroscience is true but out of his field there are wrong (at least open to argument ) data. For example "brains in vats" argument doesn't not belong to Rene Descartes. It belongs to another philosopher Hilary Putnam. ( Descartes' argument on the same subject was a demon making humans dream whatever he wants). The book also upset me as a Turkish reader by presenting genocide claims against Turks as historical truth.Despite these points I liked the book and it can be considered as mind opening.

This is a book for beginners. If you've never read anything on neuroscience before, this book is an amazing first step -- especially if you read it while watching (or after you've watched) David Eagleman's TV Series, "The Brain".If you are a professor or student looking for new ways to teach, new examples and engaging stories, or new lines of thought to deliver neuroscientific contents, this book may also be interesting for you -- yet, less so. This was my case. For those who are already familiar with neuroscientific concepts and just want an update on cutting edge neuroscientific research, there's really nothing new here. So, considering that this is a book obviously written for beginners, I give 5 stars.

an excellent book for those interested the less considered aspects of how our brains work. I saw two programs of David Eagleman on PBS which prompted me to purchase this book. In my library, I have a couple of shelves on the brain, as well as years of collected articles. (Having a brain tumor has added to my interest) This is a most unusual presentation. Maybe wath his PBS presentation to see if this sparks your interest.

Every page, opens new thoughts, New possibilities. I never dreamt of the things that are now possible. The future holds the most exciting growth in what our bodies are capable of. I wish I could live another 100 years to see it all happen.

Review

"Superb . . . Thought-provoking, distressing, shockingly tense, and always very sad, it is surely one of the best documentaries of the year."  —Time Out on the documentary"Potent mix of suspense, pathos, and indignation."  —Variety on the documentary"Freeth lays bare a beautiful but lawless land fouled by fear. A 'Clockwork Orange' state where racism, greed and violence are ultimately humbled by almost unimaginable courage. Richly described, bravely chronicled and utterly compelling."  —Mike Thompson, BBC Radio's Foreign Affairs Correspondent

I expected that a person on the wrong end of land reform would be anti-Mugabe, but I was hoping that I'd get a more balanced analysis of what is an unfortunate, but actually a predictable, problem for a nation that fought successfully to rid itself of British colonialism. In a country where the white invaders (representing 3% of the population) owned 80% of the best farmland at liberation, what are the new leaders to do to right the wrongs of history? It appears the leaders realized that maintaining the status quo would guarantee an ungovernable mess for decades, perhaps centuries! That why they negotiated compensation by Britain and the US for white land-owners who would cede the land. Unfortunately, they both reneged. Hence the mess. I would have thought that even a white farmer in these circumstances could see some of the difficulty this posed for the country. Instead Freeth goes on in what is essentially a rant, that at the end of the day exposes all the reasons why it's best for these remnants of colonialism ought to move on: He hates the people, their culture and religion. He thinks that the white farmers are superior and the salvation of the country, i.e that they are doing a great service to the country that could not otherwise be done without them. These are colonial attitudes. It seems ironic that the atrocities that Freeth decries are the same types of atrocities that resulted in his and other white farmers getting the land in the first place! Where was the outrage from his ilk when the British were terrorizing the native people and taking their land? Clearly, he has a severe blind spot. While 2 wrongs do not make a right, all things considered, it seems best that he moves on and let the Zimbabweans govern their country and succeed or fail as they will. He should seek compensation from the colonizer.

Padded with too many extraneous and meandering anecdotes that snuff all momentum. It's an important story, and worth skimming or reading casually over the course of a few months (intensive reading will cause migraines). The author is a nice and sincere guy but his editor is a hack. Recommended for students of Zimbabwe's current affairs only. Casual readers should check out one of Peter Godwin's books instead.

The horrors of what is happening to the white farmers in Zimbabwe has been made possibleby the courage of Ben, Laura, Mike and Angela. These two families, along with thousands ofwhite commercial farmers lost their farms, homes, personal possessions, machinery, animals, so that the ZANU-PF cronies of Mugabe could move in, and steal without payinga cent. Property title deeds and the rule of law are non-existent. The invasions alsoaffected the farm workers who also were evicted to become jobless and destitute with nofuture. To understand the real horrors that are happening in Zimbabwe, I recommend that youwatch the documentary on the white farm invasions "Mugabe and the white african"before you read the book.

Ben Freeth's powerful and gripping book leaves me speechless. Compelling reading. The relentless brutality and horror of the Mugabe regime, and the magnitude of the suffering is in stark contrast to the courage and perseverance of the Campbell and Freeth families and countless Zimbabwean farmers. I am humbled by their testimony and the pleas for justice. The awful truth of this book is that the atrocities continue. Where is the outcry from our "democratic" governments? We have much to learn from this extraordinary book. What remains with me, night and day, greater than the unspeakable suffering and pain, is a powerful testimony to the amazing power of God.

Amazing and insightful. Little is known about the trials and and atrocities committed by Mugabe's government against the Whites in the country. Whites dont seem to generate the same amount of interest or protection of their human rights as do the Blacks. Well worth reading and becoming more aware of what is going on in Zimbabwe and the torture , rape and pillaging the Whites are experiencing in this day and age of democracy and human rights. Well written in an unemotional and factual way by Ben Freeth who has personally lived through it all.

I enjoyed this because it was a true experience of life for white people in Zimbabwae and gave an appreciation of the corruption to people that seek power for themselves. It leaves a feeling of sadness and disgust when this country was so prosperous and a great producer for export and is now a poverty stricken backwater. This is a good testimony of the true life experiences for those white people caught in the Magabe trap.

A truthful account of what's been happening in Zimbabwe over the past 10+ years, and continues to take place unabated under the noses of the international community, who idly stand by and watch a nation brought to ruin by a demented power-hungry leader. No matter your race or religion this is a worthwhile read to understand why Mugabe has done what he has to the people he supposedly fought for - it was definitely an eye-opener for me, an offspring of the Rhodesian soil.

Provides a great insight into the problems that many proud Zimbabweans

So you're going to the Southern Cone? Or perhaps only thinking about it? Well, think about it some more, and place these images of Argentina in your mind: the Western hemisphere's highest peaks, rising to almost 7000m and blanketed in virgin snow; the painted deserts of the northern Andes, high and dry with colonial cities and lanky cacti; legendary Iguazu Falls, a massive rush of water falling nearly 20 stories and extending as far as the eye can see; shimmering blue-green lakes stretching out between lush mountain forests in the Lake District; astounding southern glaciers actively calving huge slivers of ice; and the magnificent desolation of Patagonia, instilling a romantic tingle and wanderlust. Then there's Tierra del Fuego, the tip of the southern world, encompassing beautiful scenery and the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia. Or how about a cruise to (relatively) nearby Antarctica? Everywhere in Argentina, from the northern subtropical lowlands to the Patagonian shores, you will glimpse wildlife ranging from strange guanacos, rheas and capybaras to the more familiar flamingoes, whales and penguins. Also, let's not forget the probable start of your adventure: The urban frenzy that is Buenos Aires. This sophisticated capital city circulates through bustling streets and grand avenues lined with historic edifices born of European architects. All around are beautiful portenos (inhabitants of Buenos Aires), elegantly coiffed and forever fashionable, passionately expressing their Spanish and Italian roots through energetic personalities and expansive body language. Old-time cafes, tango bars, fine restaurants (think succulent steaks!), late-night dancing and charming colonial neighborhoods complete this picture, and all this is just a start. If you want to get away from the tourist beat, you can see backroads of grassland or lush forests and meet some of the friendliest folks in South America. Outside Argentina, you can even have some fun at the raucous summer beach resorts in Uruguay or explore the region's indigenous roots in Paraguay. These two under-appreciated countries are brimming with colonial architecture and Jesuit ruins, generations-old traditions, subtropical lowlands and an astounding range of wildlife - and you won't have to share it with many other tourists!

As Advertised.

Hmm, missing the pizzaz of other Lonely Plant books

I used the guide in February 2003 to complete a trip in Argentina. The Lonely Planet guide was the best that I found, but none were up to par. I had Rough Guide to Argentina with me as well, and found it superior for the descriptions of points of interest. Lonely Planet, however, provided adequate descriptions and added travel information (75% correct) and local maps from time to time. Particularly unreliable were prices (of course, with the economic situation) and flight information. Pricing in any of the Arg. guides published for early 2003 is only good for comparison between like opportunities. Flights tended to be offered on different days or had been cancelled since publishing. The only notable information flaw I remember was in the El Bolson description, where they placed the cervezeria and associated campground on the opposite side of town. Everyone I met travelling to Uruguay or Paraguay had the Shoestring Guide to S.A. rather than this specialty guide, so I have no information on those sections of the book. All in all, the L.P. guide provided the best overall information, and I wouldn't have had as much time to enjoy my trip without it.

I will only say that if the author of a book about a country (or countries) demonstrates in the "Facts" section not having even looked at a map of the region, showing complete lack of knowledge of the most basic geography of what s/he claims to know and write about, what reliability can you expect from such a book?I'll give you three examples from the "Facts on Argentina" section that reveal lack of knowledge of the region's geography and geopolitics.1. It says: "In most of Argentina and the other Rio de la Plata countries (Uruguay and Paraguay)...". This is the grosser mistake because Paraguay is nowhere near! the Rio de la Plata river. And that is easy to see in a map of the area this book writes about. Also from a cultural perspective, this is a gross mistake. Only Uruguay and Argentina are (and always have been) known as "the Rio de la Plata river countries". There is even a culture common to both margins of the Rio de la Plata (River Plate in English). This "rioplatense" culture (from "Rio" and "Plata") is not even shared by all of huge Argentina that is a lot more than just the region around this river that divides it from smaller Uruguay.2. It says that Spaniard "Solís probed the area now known as Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay". But the region occupied by what today are those three countries is VERY big--and one could not say more than Solís probed the region around the Rio de la Plata river, which covers only a small section of today's Uruguay and Argentina (and not Paraguay).3. It says that "Solís died at the hands of Uruguayan tribes". This sounds almost as a joke if not an insult. Uruguayans did not exist in Solís's times. The author might mean "the tribes *then* inhabiting *today's* Uruguay". Those tribes were not Uruguayan, just as the Apaches were not American (nationals of the U.S.).I leave the conclusions up to you. I'm sure *some* facts must be right in this book, but such a lack of professionalism revealed in the absense of the most basic review of the facts of a book edited by a large, well known publisher does not inspire the least trust in me. I rather not waste my money: I am willing to pay for information--not for mis*information.

Studs Terkel's classic book "Working" is nothing more than a large volume of transcribed confessions of working people. The concept is deceptively simple, but what it reveals about a common activity that unites all of humanity is often truly surprising. Do you hate your job? Guess what. Most people do! Terkel gets workers from waitresses and steel workers to dentists and ad executives to confess what's really in their souls and how they really feel about what they do to make a buck. The surprise is how universal many of the feelings we have about our jobs truly are.One of the most striking things to me is how little has changed in the intervening 40 years since the interviews contained in "Working" were first collected. When describing work, nostalgia runs rampant among Americans. We look back longingly to the days when America was a mighty manufacturing powerhouse, when we domestically produced much of what we consume. We often think about steel or car manufacturing through a gauzy haze. "Working" clears the haze away and reveals a far less rosy truth: manufacturing work is often robotic, dehumanizing, and physically punishing. Men who do this work have no love for it and their bodies often pay a steep price for it. They didn't view it as romantic or noble then and they probably don't now. It's just a means to make a living wage.Of the dozens (and dozens) of interviews in the book, a series of common themes are present. Here are the ones that caught my attention. There's a recognition among long-time workers that profit is king over all. The people who produce product are mere cogs in the machine.Everyone has a secret dream job, what they imagine they'd rather be doing, where things would be better somehow.Even if people don't like their jobs, they're often proud of their personal ability, how fast they can complete a task, how accurately, tips they've learned through years of experience. They possess hard-won knowledge that took years to accumulate.Laborers often see management as oppressors who play for a different team. They're to be thwarted in petty ways whenever the opportunity presents itself. It's often a game to occupy time or a way to build camaraderie amongst peers. "How can we get back at the Man?"People recognize there own limitations and don't necessarily want to be treated as equals, but they do want to be respected, no matter what their station. They want others to recognize their value, that the product or service being offered by the company wouldn't be viable without their efforts. They know that society couldn't produce a steel beam or a car or serve hot meals to people who demand them if it weren't for them. These jobs lack status and glamour, but the world would stop without them. The "old days" are always better, no matter what era you grew up in. Nostalgia for a better past is universal. There's a feeling that "back in my day, there was craft to the job, now work's just robotic or talentless." Also, "kids today!" and how they lack drive or commitment is a common refrain. There's nothing new under the sun.40 years ago people were already complaining that the days of company loyalty were over, the idea that you could work for one firm for a lifetime and be rewarded or valued were a thing of the past.Corporate life is empty, and corporate success an illusion. Big money managers are petrified of the hotshot youngster nipping at their heels, angling for their job. They worry about their age, that they're disposable once they're over 50. Executives report feeling a moral hollowness about their work. As one of the interviewees put it "in the business world, in order to do a better job, you have to become ruthless. In order to make more money, you have to care for people less. In order to succeed, you have to be willing to stab your competitor in the back."People who have found ladder-climbing to be an empty pursuit stop hungering for status and no longer care about it. When that happens, they're free to pursue their heart's desire, or something that makes them feel like they're truly contributing to the world in a meaningful way, in a way beyond making profit for a corporation. Many jobs are "too small for one's spirit." People need to feel challenged in order to be fulfilled. A job which is secure and pays adequately may mean complete misery if there's no challenge or sense of meaningful contribution.

If you're a fiction writer, this is almost a must-have resource for story ideas and character research. If you just want a good read, this is a fantastic collection of insights into the efforts, dreams, and disappointments of your fellow humans. No collection of essays has made me feel more connected and more humbled to be a person, a working person. Really-- this is just a phenomenal book, even now in 2018. You'll feel the anochronism at times, but more strongly you'll feel the timelessness of the text and its purpose, its point. Read it. Enjoy.

This is a fantastic book and I'm only 1/4 into it. The personal words by so many working people is a glimpse into life in the early 1980's before so many societal changes in modern times. A wonderful sociological text. After reading this , I can see now, how we've changed into a service economy. So many tedious/hard jobs have been replaced by automation. The book can be read in short doses because of its brief chapters. I can't say enough good things about this book.

This book should be required reading for congress critters and for employers. These are the words and experiences of Real Peole, doing the Real Work that keeps the rest of us functioning. These are the people who grow, process, and serve our food; who construct the stuff we need; who take care of us and our families; who clean up after us. These are the builders and maintainers who are too often underpaid and overworked, but who carry on with courage, devotion, and humor. Highly recommended.

I read this book when it was first published, and it was a major influence on my life. I was in college at the time, and reading it inspired me to make myself employable in a field where I'd actually enjoy my work. I bought this copy for a literacy student--the language is fairly easy, and the interviews are short and interesting.

Read this eons ago and it never really left me. I recently visited my so who had one of Terkel's books, and suddenly decided I must own this one again. Am reading it bit by bit, which is the delight of it. Many wonderful stories.

Terkel is an amazing writer -- or perhaps editor, or even interview. Whatever he should be classified as, his work on these books is unparalleled and deeply revealing. Totally satisfied with the Kindle format as well.

Oldie but goodie. An entertaining and informative read. Easy to read increments.

My good deed for the day is to urge you, if you are shopping around for a "How To" on Wordpress is to pounce on this book.Wordpress is a difficult program application to get into. I dabbled a couple of times over a few years before I caught on. Funny thing, once you get over the hump it is easy as milk and cookies....but getting to that point is tough if you try to do it all on your own as I did. (I had no choice way way back.)Fortunately you have Dr. Andy's book that tells you everything you need to know...step by step. You have his book tutorial on one device or screen and Wordpress on the other.... You can have the start for your site up in a day of very pleasant peckings, guaranteed...and what's more you'll actually understand what you just did...and be able to replicate with authority. (I say "replicate" because once the site is up you populate it with your great stuff.)I can't tell you strongly enough that Dr. Andy's book will save you weeks of research...trying to do it for yourself from scratch. It's even good for folks like me who already have a Wordpress site up!I have the book. I also have 80 or so websites behind me, most of the later ones optimized the Dr. Andy way for max traffic. Yes, there is more than just building the site...you have to do things to get traffic. But again, I have the book because there are always things I forgot....and a couple of WP things I didn't know and relying on the brain of Dr. Andy gives me the Wordpress edge I need. He is MY goto guy and you need to make him yours. His latest tip and trick on a little ditty called SSL saved me untold pain and angst recently. For instance.Get the book. Get on his invaluable mailing list. Get to know Dr. Andy. It's best for you. Guaranteed. You'll be thanking me!

A while back I had an idea for a webpage and thought, "No big deal. It can't be that tough to create a website." I started dabbling on-line, YouTube, etc. for information on how to build a website. I started one and, honestly, I liked how it looked until things started going goofy and then I had no idea how to fix it. My website knowledge was built on thin ice as it kinda held up, but it felt like it could crack at any moment. Then, thank my lucky stars, I found this book and, wow, I've learned so much! In my opinion, this is a must have for anyone who wants to build their website with a solid footing.

Andy's books and courses are always extremely informative and have actionable tips and ideas. I always walk away with ways to improve my sites.

I was hoping for more; the author did fairly good at dissecting various parts of the WordPress platform; but, did not really show how to put all the pieces together. I also found the Gutenberg editor did not work will with the authors recommended theme (2017). Going back and forth from the Gutenberg and classic editor was confusing and frustrating. And, many of the screen shots in the book did not match my images on my attempted website. Overall, I was disappointed in the book. I was hoping to have some semblance of a website by the time I got through the book, unfortunately that did not happen. I need to do further research beyond what this book offered me. The author claims you will be able to "build a professional website in a few short hours." This is simply "not true." I gave it 3 stars because the book was reasonably priced, otherwise I would have given it 2 stars.

The book is well written and provides a step by step walk though the setup with Wordpress. Excellent resources and learning book.

I would give five stars, if the TOC and Index were more descriptive. When done, the content would benefit.

It is written like I have a private class. Really easy to understand. I'm looking forward to being able to finish my website with it.

Great author. Great for doing and learning
