I own a lot of waterfall books; probably over 20. Up until now the best book out of all of them has been Kevin Adams' "North Carolina Waterfalls", 2nd edition. The 3rd edition, the book I'm reviewing, surpasses the previous one by miles!! It is extremely well-written, contains valuable information about hiking and waterfall safety precautions, and is probably the most complete guide to the state's falls in existence. Not only are all of those things true, the photography, all color, is phenomenal! I don't believe I've ever seen such astounding pictures of water flowing at night with the Milky Way galaxy spread gloriously out above it!! This author is talented in a multitude of areas. Buy this book! You will not be disappointed!!

I bought this to take on a week long trip to NC. The pictures are beautiful, the directions I used were accurate, and I can see how this book would be of value to someone who spends a lot of time in NC. As it turned out, it wasn't the best choice for my recent trip, but that's no reason to reduce the rating. I can, however, see using this on a future trip. Here's why it wasn't the best choice for me this time. First, I wasn't familiar with the area, so the organization of the book was not helpful without an actual map. (I should have bought the map by Kevin Adams that goes with this.) Second, I'm not so enthusiastic (or fit) to go bush-whacking to see a waterfall or anything else, so perhaps an index of falls with difficulty levels would be helpful as an appendix. (Perhaps this was also part of the map I didn't buy.) Third, my plan was to hike with my dog to waterfalls, but I wasn't staying in the area where there were any waterfalls close by, so I could only use this for a few waterfalls, and those were ones listed on most websites. Now that I have the book, I will be able to plan my next NC visit to take in more of the lovely falls.

I was impressed with his first edition. Then his second comes along and blows the first one away. I did not expect such a leap on the third edition, but it is another such "quantum leap." No more black-and-white photos. Every major listing has a color photo, and one can see the evolution of this nature photographer's talent. It's a stunning and amazingly helpful guide book and delightfully readable with his usual wit. Anyone wishing to visit North Carolina's waterfalls should make the acquisition of this book a top priority.

I had the previous version of this book and love this updated 3rd edition so much more. The full color pics are wonderful, but even better are the GPS coordinates to every trailhead and waterfall, which is exactly what I was missing with the 2nd edition. It's extremely thorough in describing the hikes, which I find very helpful since I hike with my dog and need to know if the conditions require climbing or other things he can't do. The organization of the book by region is great with maps in each chapter to show the proximity of the waterfalls to each other; great for planning your route. I love that he rates the beauty of each waterfall, and although subjective, he gives some reasoning for his ratings to help you decide if that hike is worth it. I refer to this book before every hike and highly recommend it to any waterfall enthusiast in NC!

This book is jam packed with information about waterfalls in North Carolina. Has many waterfall that I did not even know existed. And I am an avid hiker. The navigation of the book is nice becuase you at a map to find the section of North Carolina you are looking for a waterfall. He rates them on beauty and photographability. If that’s a word. It has pictures of the waterfalls that might be worth making a special effort to go look at. It is a great book to keep up with all the falls that you have been to. And also all the falls you want to go to. I pinpointed my location on the map and used a string to find which ones were nearest so I could start close and explore. Worth having in your library. He also references some other sources of info.

Great book with awesome material! Never ending possibilities. I love that it lists nearby waterfalls. I like that it is printed in color but it also makes it feel like a coffee table book. Which is probably best, would ruin it like my other one if I took it out. Directions are great and it provides different ratings for falls. I have found some stuff in this book that I simply could not find elsewhere!! Thank you Kevin!

Just when I thought the 2nd edition was the greatest thing, here comes Adams with another beautiful collection of his photography and experience! Since my old 2nd edition copy is falling apart, I was overjoyed to see this new one. It's loaded with stunning new photographs of nearly every fall, as well as including many more new ones not included in the 2nd edition. You'll be tempted to buy 2 copies -- one for hikes and one for the coffee table!

Kevin Adams continues to provide detailed information and beautiful waterfall photography. I do not have experience with his previous editions, but I have heard that this edition is even better than his wonderful previous editions because he continues to update the information for accuracy and to reflect current conditions at the falls locations, including accessibility. Don't go waterfalling in NC without it!

There are so many beautiful paintings that I would probably never have seen if not for this book. Art books usually focus on the Big Few. The illustrations are mostly large, but even the smaller ones are very high quality.

The art is absolutely wonderful, but be very careful about the accompanying essays, which are full of problems. In no way is Picasso's "Demoiselles d'Avignon" a "Cubist" painting, nor is an American modern painting of very clearly depicted forms against a sort of swirly background. Building roads as people moved westward (white people, mainly) is presented as willful destruction of the natural environment. Artists of the early 20th century did not look at African or Oceanic art just for its "simplicity". The final essay, on the "queer" aspects of this rural modernism, manages to include Georgia O'Keeffe, who herself was not "queer" or lesbian. In this case, the author seems to believe that although she preferred men, since her private life was unusual and some of her paintings as well, she was therefore "queer". Most of these texts have particular pre-set interpretations which they're trying to push, and the result is that the actual art is overshadowed by the theoreticians' social and political mindset. Again, the art is wonderful, so you can revel is looking at it and studying it in a great variety of ways. But treat the essays very carefully, and at some distance.

 This Art Catalougue goes in conjuction with the High Museum of Art show Cross Country that explores Rural Modern that runs through May 2017. The collection has over 200 pieces, 70 of which are from the high Museum permanent collection. This beautiful book has informative essays and graphic color photographs. A good book for any worthy library.

Wow hats off to Brandywine River Museum of Art, High Museum of Art, Skira Rizzoli and all the people who assembled this most excellent book on American art for us unfortunate art lovers on west coast who are unable to attend this world class exhibition. This period of American art is most fascinating and continues to grow on me over the years. Such beautiful art after WWI and before and during great depression. I wish all art books were as good as this one - excellent reproductions on just-the-right-weight paper.

Great contemporary overview of regionalism.

Exceptional contribution to the rural modern art movement. Artwork is beautifully laid out and offers excellent essays on the period. Some of the most interesting and unique artwork I've seen.

The biggest tragedy of Peach Blossom comes when it ends. Western fiction, especially fantasy, has become very repetitive- generally retelling the same stories or same characters over and over again. We in the west have once again become obsessed with heroes and heroines who are flawless and idealized. Our heroes and heroines are perfect, brilliant, amazing, the best at what they do, they do no wrong-- and that makes for a very tedious, boring read.What made Peach blossom stand out was that it embraced a heroine who had strong points and weak points both; she could be clever and witty, she could be vain and proud. Her charm and wit sometimes saving her, and her faults often lead to disaster. In the end, the story's tragedy comes not from some generic outside villain like in contemporary western fantasy, but rather because of the faults of the two leads- Quian's pride and Yen Hua's deception.The story follows along a beautiful dramatic arc- moments of tragedy are painful because they are contrasted against moments of humor, moments of heartbreak are painful because they are contrasted against moments of love. Rather than following the stale pattern of contemporary western fantasy novels where a perfect, flawless hero has to go up against an evil foe only to come out victorious in the end, Peach Blossom follows a painfully human trajectory of mistakes, successes, loss and redemption. This is truly an epic adventure, and the first book that has made me cry in a long, long time.Through its rich world building, a westerner can catch glimpses of the rich world of Chinese folklore- rituals of Taoism, the disciplines of Buddhist teachings, and ancient Chinese myths play a large part in the story and catches the imagination and curiosity of any westerner who might not be familiar with those things.As I said, the tragedy in Peach Blossom comes when you realise it's over. After being given a glimpse into the remarkable world of Chinese fantasy and mythology, one yearns for more- but unfortunately, there is a great lack of Chinese fantasy novels and romances available in the western market.If this mere glimpse into popular Chinese literature is anything to go by, then clearly it has so many wonderful and unique and amazing qualities that most Westerners will never have access to. As western writers have made an impact on the world with stories like Harry Potter and Robin Hood that have crossed the boundaries of countries and introduced foreign nations to English folktales, imagine how far Chinese authors might go in introducing the world to China's beautiful and unique literary voice and rich literary and mythological heritage.There are Western writers who have tried to write stories about Chinese legends or set in China, but the written Chinese voice is inimitable. There's a cadence unique to the Mandarin writer or the Cantonese writer that, when well translated, carries across the ocean. It is a beautiful, unique voice. And if western fantasy is currently lacking in anything, it is very much lacking in beauty and uniqueness.The bitterness that comes at the end of Peach Blossom is not just because of the story's bittersweet end, but because we don't know how long it will be until another Chinese novel of this quality might be made available to us.I have read that this book is plagiarized. I have read that this book isn't even among the best Chinese fantasy has to offer. Right now, this is among the best (and only) examples of xianxia romance literature available to the English market. I have been watching the Chinese television series, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (Eternal Love), on Drama Fever. The series is based upon the novel. The Prologue of the novel is covered in the first 25 episodes of the series. Chinese screenwriters do no delete scenes. So, if you are having difficulty following the story, I recommend you watch the series in conjunction with reading the novel. The story is both a romance and a fantasy. The story is a bit complex in that it jumps back and forth between the past and present and the mortal and immortal realms. However, it unfolds a beautiful tapestry of love, betrayal, and redemption.

The style of writing that Tang Qi uses took a bit of getting used to by me, but once I did I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I, like many others, saw the drama "10 Miles of Peach Blossoms" and heard so much about the book from the comments that I decided to get it. I'm glad that I did - the books always give you a much better idea as to what the characters were thinking, much better than the actors can portray. (No slight there - those actors were fantastic! It was just a very complicated story) There were some variations from page to screen but nothing that couldn't be reconciled. I liked the last 100 pages best - when the very complex story came together and all of the seemingly loose ends tied together in a perfect knot. Patience is needed - not a book to rush through. Take your time and enjoy the fantasy!

As someone who has watched the drama series Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, I enjoyed this book. I'm not sure if it's the translation or the words of the author, but it seems very simplistic, like a quick retelling of the drama series. Usually it's the book that has so much more detail, but in this case the book seemed to be lacking in detail compared to the drama series. Generally I want to read the book before seeing the movie or drama based on the book, but in this case, definitely watch the drama first. The drama follows the book almost exactly, but it is richer and beautifully detailed, while the book doesn't have much in the way of descriptions or details. All in all though, I definitely enjoyed it.

This book could have been an epic telling of true love that transcends all realms. But as a plagiarized work, I found that it was an awful lazy attempt at calling it a complete work. Told completely from Bai Qians point of view was a complete rip off to the reader. I think the original author with time could have honed this piece into a classic that would transcend generations. But the rip off artist robbed them of that opportunity and took an epic story and lazily turned out this tripe.That is a shame. Some of the reviews stated that it would be difficult with the jumping back and forth in time and the mortal realm. It was not.1. Bai Qain was not as unlikeable as some have stated.2. This work is amazingly amateurish. The screenwriters for the tv show did an infinitely better job of rounding out the story and characters. Giving them more depth, likability and character.3. It has homosexual overtones. Also some lite sexual descriptions. Not 50 shades of grey level of descriptions though.4. The flaws of the book are fixed in the show but the book does give insight on passage of time, some of the more confusing parts of the translations in the show, and it is also not over complicated with several story arcs.

I've been a fan of Pamela Meyer's well-written and well-cited business writing since her book, From Workplace to Playspace: Innovating, Learning and Changing Through Dynamic Engagement. In Agility Shift, Meyer focuses on enabling a more nimble workplace culture, one that can handle the constant volatility and disruption of business today. Talent Development professionals familiar with Agile methodology, will find this book nothing short of a watershed. However, the thinking presented in this book would be of value to any leader/manager looking to make their own team, department, or organization more competitive in a world of constant, often unpredictable change.After a quick read, I found her mix of concepts and practical tools a win. Meyer's ease of navigating between intriguinig case studies and straightforward advice makes reading it feel more like lucking into a lunch with a world class consultant, rather than reading a business book. She's sharing a career of knowledge at a fire sale price. For example, if you like tools, look at her checklist on p.134-135. She provides an easy road map to apply so many of the Learning & Development concepts she introduces. Likewise, her sample question list "Recruiting for Agility" on p. 158-159 is an HR Manager's dream, thoughtfully condensing the book's talent acquisition information into simple tactics to determine if potential hires are already aligned to these new needs of business. (Hint: not all Milennials are ready for the Agility Shift. This book will pay dividends no matter which generations are in your workforce.)After a quick read, I'm using her book to help me assess how to improve the responsiveness of my own organization. I'm currently using her work on "Ecosystem mapping" (p.114) to help me understand which stakeholders can help build a more nimble organization, and who will need more support.Obviously, I can't say enough good things about Meyer's experience and scholarship on these matters. I highly recommend this book.

It doesn't matter what agile practices you are following if you dont know why you are following. The goal as described in this book should be to become more relevant, resourceful, resilient, responsive, and reflective. And journey towards these goals must be journey of a supportive community that is made of coordial supportive and enthusiastic people who are life long learners.

The agility shift is a great read for understanding the foundational mindset needed to become a successful agile organization. That mindset includes building a relational web; continuous learning; flexibility; responsiveness and collaborative. Well worth the time investment.

I did not know about Mary's House in Ephesus until I visited Turkey. It was the most beautiful and peaceful place I have ever visited on Earth. Did you know it is the only place where Christians and Muslims worship together? I will remember it always as one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. I wish I had read this book before I visited, and now I cannot wait to read many more books about everything related to this topic. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Turkey, you must visit Mary's House. You must read this book no matter what your religious beliefs. N Colleen Sexton

I bought the book mostly because I was curious about Sr. Marie and her life before and after she had become a nun. The book did a good job about the basics of her history and how she becameinvolved with the quest to find Mary's house in Ephesus. I found the book inspiring and the photos of the site before and after the restoration made me want to visit the house. I was alsotouched to read how this shrine is one of the very few places in the world where Christians and Muslims can pray side by side. I would enjoy a more in depth history/biography about Sr. Marie.She must have been an amazing woman to have pursued this task.

Fr. Carl Schulte's reveals all that is invisible in the discovery of Our Lady's House. Sr. Marie de Mandat-Grancey, a true daughter of Our Mother of God's Holy Church, humbly demonstrates how persistence in faith and holy prayer can achieve the impossible for God's glory. What a delightful read!

It is an excellent book on perseverance and the power of faith. GOD bless you.

Arrived timely and in perfect condition. I started reading it and couldn't put it down! Wonderful story and very well written. Highly recommend this book!

This is a beautifully written book about the discovery of Mary's house in Ephesus. It contains so much detail information about the people involved in its discovery as well as the political climate these blessed men and women had to deal with. Trust in God and Patience got them through.

We visited Mary's House in Ephesus in Dec. 2012 and were very interested in more information. This covers it all. I only wish that we had gotten this book before our visit as it would have enhanced our perspective and appreciation of the site.

This is one of the best books I have read. After a few sentences, I could not put it down. Extrordinary information and could not wait until I reached the end of the book and the end of the story. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the "Blessed Mother". God is so good at putting people where they are supposed to be. Thank You Sr. Marie de Mandat-Grancey for your continued work and interest in the Blessed Mother.

A collection of old photos. Not much interest unless you live there. Little or no text to explain history.

It doesn't take the Coast Guard to know the Coast Guard, but sometimes the inside knowledge and access helps the cause. Authors Stacy and Virginia Thomas met in the Coast Guard while both serving at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and got married at one of the lighthouse of which they write in Guarding Door County. Their writing style in the book is professional and precise, their words carefully chosend to show respect for their service and the men and women who served before them. The authors have broken the book down geographically, assigning themselves southern, northern and island blocks of lighthouses. Life-saving stations, as there are only three in the county (Sturgeon Bay Canal, Bailey's Harbor and Plum Island) are covered in one extensive chapter. And as there are only twelve historic lighthouses on the peninsula as well, they also receive lengthy coverage in the book, with multiple images of each lighthouse through time. An added bonus to this book is the authors' treatment of their final full chapter, a primer on "Current Events: Preservation and Tourism" of Coast Guard heritage on the peninsula. Guarding Door County, therefore, goes beyond the history to the story of the present day, allowing those folks who go to (or in many cases, return to) the peninsula the opportunity to carry this book with them as a travel aid.(published in Wreck & Rescue Journal, May 2006, V 9, No 1)

Guarding Door County is another wonderful addition to Arcadia's titles. The book gives a very good overview of the U.S. Coast Guard which explains how lighthouses and life-saving stations became part of the organization. Each picture has detailed captions that bring the stories to life. I liked how the authors included a final chapter on preservation and tourism to update the reader on what was currently happening to the structures. Finally, the appendix really helped me understand how Fresnel lenses worked. Overall, I loved looking at the historical photos and learning more about the lighthouses and life-saving stations in Door County.
