In the third installment of The Daughters of Dark Root, we learn that Maggie has been placed under a curse which puts her life and the life of her unborn child at risk. The wily Larinda has agreed to help keep the curse at bay until the birth of the child, but at a formidable cost: Maggie must learn all the secrets of Dark Root and must find out at last who she really is.Ms. Aasheim continues to do what she had begun in book one: to explore the complicated relationships between sisters in the fantasy context of "magick." Her characters are vibrantly real, their conflicts, the stuff of life. The establishment of a personal identity not dictated by her parents and her past remains critical to Maggie, who fears the kind of mother she could become. With its playful chapter titles and its fascinating back story, The Curse of Dark Root: Part One is arguably the best written and best edited of the series so far. Again Ms Aasheim demonstrates that even among witches, family is everything.

Wow, it seems each book gets darker and darker. And yet, I feel as if they are just skimming the surface of the depths. Perhaps I have read too many books within this genre and expect this and it may be why I feel this bit of lacking in these books. Now don't get me wrong, I still love them and really enjoy the read. Hence the reason I can't seem to put them down. Especially this one and now I am biding my time with a novel that I will most likely put down the minute I can get my hands on part two. For this reason I can still give her 5 stars. Her characters I would like to learn more depth of their story, I just feel as if they are more complex than what we know but then this might be again back to the skimming of the depths that I mentioned before. The story arch is well thought out and one of the reasons she has kept me reading these books. I just want a bit more meat with my meal.

This is a well written series of a family/town that focuses on three witchy sisters with unique powers and abilities that just keeps getting better and better. While I was hooked from the first book, I often felt like it teased with hints of romance and unfinished story lines however this one certainly delivers on almost every front. While there were some minor issues with typos and missing words, it all took a backseat to the desire to keep on reading. It's a hard book to put down and a fun ride! The characters are more fleshed out and likable, especially noteworthy are Michael and Armand's development ---the storyline just keeps luring you in and just makes you want more and more. Can't wait for the next one!

It's been a while since an author has been able to thoroughly grab my attention so completely. I adore this series and have desperately tried to put it down, but have failed miserably so far.

April’s writing is very intense and through whole this has its merits in often results in a very slow story. That being said the story it’s self is very good and does cause you to want to continue reading the series.

I ordered the next book before I finished the book before it.So this is how I got through book one-two and three. The writing style draws you in and you will long for more.I promise Dark Roots will have you hooked.Always looking forward to more.

Another awesome book. I just love this series so much. This series is a must read for everyone. Looking forward to more adventures.

This. Was a fun read and keeps you interested in what will happen next . The character are well developed and enjoyable to read about. Looking forward to Book 4.

It may well be the most important book you read this year.” ―Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author of Help, Thanks, Wow"[This] beautiful book softened my heart and taught me things I did not know I needed to learn. What could be better than that?” ―Dean Ornish, M.D. and New York Times bestselling author of The Spectrum"Our capacity to live and love fully awakens as we open our hearts to death. Over the years, his teachings have informed both my meditative and clinical practices. Now, through The Five Invitations a broader audience can benefit from Frank’s insights, soulful perspectives, and practical guidance. What a gift!” ―Ira Byock M.D., international leader in palliative care, Chief Medical Officer for the Institute for Human Caring of Providence Health and Services, and author of The Four Things That Matter Most: A Book About Living and The Best Care Possible: A Physician’s Quest to Transform Care Through the End of Life.“The Five Invitations is a remarkable book, one that is deeply needed by all of us. Frank Ostaseski, whose journey spans over three decades of creating and participating in the hospice movement, imparts timeless wisdom that should inform our every day: How to embrace uncertainty and live with joy, peace, and acceptance. This is not a book about death, it’s a book about life and living. Buy it, share it, live it―I know I will.” ―Henry S. Lodge, M.D., Robert Burch Family Professor of Medicine, and coauthor of the Younger Next Year series“A powerful book by my good friend Frank Ostaseski, who has brought together wisdom and compassion in his life and his long years of work with the dying. We will all be enriched, inspired, and edified by his extraordinary book on how facing death can enrich our life.” ―Joan Halifax Roshi, Ph.D., founder and abbot at the Upaya Zen Center, and author of Being with Dying: Cultivating Compassion and Fearlessness in the Presence of Death“As a physician and neurosurgeon, I have learned that those who have truly lived are those that understand death as an integral part of life. In Frank Ostaseski’s profound book, The Five Invitations, he shares this reality, giving us insights and wisdom on the nature of dying but more importantly on how to truly live.” ―James R. Doty, M.D., Professor of Neurosurgery, founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, Stanford University School of Medicine, and New York Times bestselling author of Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart“Frank is a very dear friend. I have worked in the field of death and dying close to Frank and this book represents the distillation of many years of his efforts. He shows us that if you are to die consciously, there’s no time like the present to prepare. This book is a loving, compassionate reminder that the best preparation for death is a life fully lived” ―Ram Dass, international spiritual teacher and author of the bestseller Be Here Now and Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing, and Dying“Frank inspires us to live with joy by fully embracing all facets of life including our dying. With heartfelt compassion and wisdom gathered over thirty years as a Buddhist teacher and hospice founder he helps us understand that love matters most.” ―Chade-Meng Tan, Google’s “Jolly Good Fellow” and author of Joy on Demand and Search Inside Yourself“Exquisitely profound and gut-wrenchingly real, I’m not sure a wiser book has been written in the digital age. Frank’s storytelling helped me to see that to step fully into life we need to embrace death as an adventure rather than an adversary.” ―Chip Conley, author of the New York Times bestseller Emotional Equations and head of Global Hospitality and Strategy at AirBnB“How to die and how to be with the dying are questions everyone faces. Here are sharp, insightful answers from one of the great end-of-life counselors.” ―Stewart Brand, creator of the Whole Earth Catalog“This is a gem of a book! With a lifetime of inspiring service and deep spiritual wisdom to draw from, Frank Ostaseski has given us all a gift straight from the heart.” ―James Baraz, author of Awakening Joy: Ten Steps to Happiness and cofounding teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center“Frank Ostaseski speaks with clear wisdom and deep compassion. Sharing stories and insights from his decades of working with people at the very end of their lives, his ultimate revelation has to do with how meaningful, in both our living and our dying, is the capacity to be open to and present in grace. His words offer much worthy of contemplation and his service to all of us is worthy of deep respect.” ―Kathleen Dowling Singh, author of Grace in Dying: How We Are Transformed Spiritually As We Die and The Grace in Aging: Awaken As You Grow Old“This book is deep, right and rare. The compelling lessons shared in The Five Invitations are valuable to people at any phase of life. Whether facing your own imminent death or that of a loved one, navigating a crisis, or looking to embrace and enjoy living your life more fully, you will find the wisdom lovingly offered in these pages inspiring and enlightening.” ―SARK, coauthor and artist of Succulent Wild Love"Every sentence in this book is written with a velvet pen from deep within Frank Ostaseski’s heart. The authenticity of his life and his work is on every page. It is a sharing that, ultimately, our own reality is love and that when we remember that, fear has a way of disappearing by becoming valueless. It takes a lot of courage to write a book that is so beautifully transparent." ―Gerald Jampolsky, M.D., cofounder of Attitudinal Healing and author of Love Is Letting Go of Fear and Diane Cirincione-Jampolsky, Ph.D., cofounder of Attitudinal Healing International and coauthor of Love Is The Answer “[Frank Ostaseski] has found the space where awareness of death is revealed as a powerful elixir for living more abundantly, and he shares that secret brilliantly in this landmark book. Thurman, Professor of Religion, Columbia University, and author of Infinite Life

Many years I ago I was a young busy mother, curious and interested in volunteering with those with chronic illnesses or approaching death. My dream was to volunteer at Bailey Boushay House in Seattle. (first hospice to welcome AIDS patients in the nation and now a hospice for AIDS and those with terminal illnesses) Many years later with kids grown and gone, I set out with a plan. That plan involved volunteering with Bailey Boushay House, returning to school in healthcare (Occupational Therapy) and enrolling in the End of Life Program at the Metta Institute (Frank Ostaseski, founder). I bought Franks' "Being a Compassionate Companion" CD as I embarked on my journey. Having listened to the CD, narrated by Frank and then attending the End of Life Practitioner Program, I can tell you, this book has so much "voice"! IT is like being in the same room having a conversation or lecture with this author. I think about what the movie "To Sir, with Love" taught us about life lessons that still resonate today, well THE FIVE INVITATIONS takes us on a journey where the "approach" to death is actually approachable and the birthing of new insight into the end of life is sorely needed in this world. I usually give away my books after reading them , not this one....it will be reread over and over. As I closed the last chapter, my eyes filled with tears......this book touched me in a deep and profound way......it leaves you "okay" with not having all the answers and a up close personal feel with a subject our culture avoids...

When I was 12, my mom died of cancer. It spread from her lungs to her brain, briefly going into remission to cruelly give us hope before slowly killing her. For years, I was mad at the world because of this and I turned that anger inward on myself. It was a poisonous way to live, mostly devoid of joy or love. No one could understand how I felt, I thought, so I wouldn't try to explain it to them. Over the last few years, I've learned how to stop poisoning myself. After finishing Frank's book last week, I have a whole new set of tools to use death to embrace life. I also have a new view: We all live and we all die, therefore we all have been touched by death in our own ways. If we haven't been touched yet, we will be. This, to me, means that love and compassion are the ways forward for humanity, even with our enemies or people we've fallen out with.Perhaps I sound like a flit yogi or Woodstock washout, but I'm OK with that if it means I don't have to be owned by pain and fear of death. I know that my mom is within me still in some way, even if just as a lovely memory. Perhaps you can catch of my same high and also gain some new tools for living more fully and with more love from Frank's book. It's very good - I found myself laughing, crying, and rapt by Frank's stories and knowledge at different points of the book. It's a very sweet, helpful, and compassionate book. Frank, who worked has at an end-of-life hospice in San Francisco for decades, has an intimate relationship with death. You'd think this would make him callous or cynical like my childhood self, but quite the opposite is true: he embraces death as reality and is therefore able to live more fully. You can embrace death for a more full life, too. Any of us who have had a relative die might remember their regrets or sorrows, the "I wish I could have.." or "I'm sad I won't be able to..." before death carries them away. We likely know what our own wishes and sorrows are; why wait until the end to address them? Why not learn from our loved ones?Frank's methods for using death to live a more full life are sound. "Don't wait" is his first invitation, and I'm sure we've all had opportunities and moments pass by while we said "Hm, maybe later." Well guess what? This happens with life, too. Don't wait. Frank's anecdotes - sometimes sweet, sometimes gut-wrenching - will help you see how his invitations have worked over the years. I was touched by the many people who died next to Frank, all who seemed to show an immense, seemingly improbable strength in the face of death. Frank's message: we can show this strength in life, too, but it may not necessarily be what we think of as "strength." Vulnerability can be strength, he writes. So can acceptance.Even if all you get from this book is the fact that death is part of life - one that shouldn't be treated as life's deranged cousin - then I think you'll have your money's worth. However, you'll get more than that.A very good book. Read, and then live. But be careful doing both at the same time- after all, we're trying to accept death here, not run toward it.

I was captivated by The Five Invitations, reading it cover-to-cover in a 24-hour period. As I got closer to the end, I found myself reading much slower because I just didn't want it to end. I was inspired by the stories of people both young and old at the end of their lives. The part that impressed me was that it was not just stories of inspiration on how I can embrace my days, but also I found wisdom as a new mom, and how to savor these moments with my little one more. There was a chapter about grief that hit me in a way that was very profound and moving, it opened up a place in my heart about a the loss of a dear friend many years ago, that just hadn't healed. Reading Frank's book gave me a new understanding on how to "be" with that loss and feel complete with it's incompleteness. Thank you for your beautiful book.

The Five Invitations are a guide to a life well-lived. For those who work with people at the end of life or with chronic illness, the book has obvious value. But this book is so much more - it's for all of us.Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a busy attorney, Frank's Five Invitations invite you to live fully, be present in your own life, and to completely immerse yourself in what it means to be human.I first met Frank when I was looking for a way to deepen my work with my clients - cancer patients who were being treated at a large NCI cancer center. What I learned certainly helped me with my work, but the unexpected "extra" was that I began to experience changes in myself and in all of my life as a result of these profound teachings. Now this book is available to share Frank's wisdom more widely. Give yourself a great gift and accept Frank's invitation to "have a cup of tea" with death. A deeper, kinder, more loving, compassionate life awaits you.

The sentence correct guide was absolutely excellent! The CR guide is okay, I could do without it. The RC guide is very helpful as well.

Do not purchase it. Waste your money. Using websites is better.

This sets of books really helpful.

The online access code is not valid, its already been used. Not worth the money without the online test access.

The books are really amazing. What pissed me off though was that my Sentence Correction book came with a used access code. The entire point of buying a new book is to have access to online test material

Worth it! Buy it!

First of all I must admit that I bought this book because I liked the title of it: "Thinking about Android Epistemology" sounds quite exciting and when I looked at the content I was sure that this was the book I had been waiting for. To tell you the truth so far it has met if not exceeded my expectations.Maybe therefore the rating is just four stars, still, it has lived up to my hopes for some interesting and instructive hours in my favorite easy-chair.One thing that I especially appreciate in this book is that it consists of short articles, scientific in their orientation, and therefore make it easy to get the author's point after a few pages. Especially I liked Marvin Minksy's report on "Alienable Rights", where he lets an "Apprentice" and a "Surveyor" discuss this item in a funny and instructive way and at the same time put human cognition on the test bench. However, I should mention that I am not a computer scientist and that I am more interested in the philosophical and psychological point of view since and what will be the consequences and the fall out of these coming changes in human self-awareness. I am convinced that we live in an age of fundamental change - I am thinking of consciousness, singularity, machines - where our human centered beliefs and convictions are proved and will be changed in a way that we not yet can imagine. Therefore I like to take part of the opinions of philosphers like Daniel Dennet, Marvin Minsky, the grand old man in computer science, or Herbert Simon who bring this subject down to earth and let even the interested layman take part and let him understand which changes are to be awaited. I would like to thank Kenneth M. Ford Clark Glymour and Patrick J. Hayes for putting together this book and publish it and put the "science of intelligence" on "computational wings".

Good product at a good price.

Android Epistemology, as defined in this book, seeks to answer fundamental questions about the nature of Artificially Intelligent machines. The theme of the book, "thinking about" machine intelligence, unfolds in a set of often-entertaining essays by philosophers, cognitive scientists and computer scientists. The topics explored here are quite diverse, and are typically presented in an informal, discursive style. Curious computer scientists specializing in AI will find the book useful for the purpose of surveying part of the philosophical underpinnings of AI. Especially insightful was the historical introduction by the book's editors, which included a trace of the intellectual heritage of AI pioneers to philosopher mentors. Conversely, non-computer scientists should have their minds expanded by essays such as those by Simon and Churchland, which clearly and concisely spell out and rigorously defend designs of architectures of machine intelligence. The book is divided into four parts, each containing essays that roughly seek to answer the following questions:1. Can machines be intelligent? (Part I)2. Is humans and machine intelligence based on the same underlying design principles? (Part II)3. What limitations, if any, to designing intelligent systems are provided by the frame problem? (Part III)4. What are the range of human traits that machines can exhibit? (part IV)Among the essays in part one, Clark Glymour's entertaining "Silicon Reflections" shows by way of a clever fable that the claim that networks comprised of "artificial sensory and motor nerves" cannot have mental states, i.e., can't think, feel, or understand, is hard to defend. The key is imagining an advance in medical technology whereby hybrid brains, part electro-mechanical, part brain matter, are possible. The underlying argument is a sort of Sorites paradox: if the result of replacing one brain cell in a brain with mental states with a mechanical equivalent is also a brain with mental states, then repeating this "operation" one more time should have the same effect; hence repeating it until the brain has completely been mechanized will produce something that has mental states. To avoid this conclusion, the "Dretskeans" (read: Searleans, deniers of the mechanical mind) are forced to either extreme or ad-hoc positions. This essay also incorporates the theme, repeated in the closing article of this book and in other publications by the editors, that machine intelligence as a technology offers humans a sort of cognitive prosthesis, a way of augmenting the native capabilities of the human mind.An essential reading for anyone interested in the foundations of machine intelligence is Herb Simon's contribution. The language here is remarkably clear, lucid and bold. It cuts through the rhetoric and nonsense that accompanied much of the debate around the Chinese room argument, giving each premise in the argument against AI its proper amount of space (which is often less than a sentence). Among the themes Simon discusses here that still make up the fundamental challenges for engineers of machine intelligence are:1. The focus on the response-time requirements of models that we build for decision-makers, devising concise, tractable representations of a complex search state for problem solving. He notes that the set of representations forms an ordered class on which notions of equivalence can be defined. He stresses the need for scalability and the importance of laboratory prototypes. It is clear that Simon always envisioned sophisticated agents observing and changing the world.2. The importance of "nearly decomposable" systems. This implies a layered architecture for control and deliberation with different levels of abstraction. Simon is clearly aware of the challenges of complexity in intelligent systems, and his comments about decomposable systems are also relevant to issues related to verification.3. The fact that processing in intelligent systems, whether human or machine, is distributed and parallel. Consequently, architectural issues of structure and "style" (how components interact) are important.4. Reasoning with "Ill-structured phenomena", part of what today is called reasoning under uncertainty. Simon recognizes that imposing structure on ill-structured phenomena often forces a non-propositional representational framework. This insight is clearly reflected in the field of AI today.Simon also boldly asserts that some arguments against machine intelligence are based on a failure to draw the proper distinctions between what is essential for mind vs. what is not. In the latter category he discusses things like intention, consciousness, motivation, and awareness. Simon's article offers a complete and general set of principles that form the underpinnings for an architecture of machine intelligence. Another nice essay in part two is Paul Churchland's technically detailed and crisp response to the charge that the content of consciousness cannot be mapped to an activation pattern in the brain, because the latter differ between individuals, whereas the former do not.The best essays in part three are contributions by Daniel Dennett and Henry Kyburg. The frame problem, as Dennett notes, is an "installation problem", a problem of creating a concise, finite model of action that can be used by an android to autonomously plan actions. The connection to autonomy is required; teleoperated systems, or systems like the MER rovers who are commanded remotely on the ground, do not suffer from the frame problem. Dennett speculates that the solution may reside in a shift in representational paradigm to something that would be referred to today as state-based planning. On this paradigm, an agent can be viewed as continuously observing the state of the world (a vector of values) and executing a policy on that state, construed as a function from states to actions. A policy can be viewed as a very large look-up table, and no enumeration of consequences of actions is ever required. Of course, devising a policy incurs its own technical challenges; the primary problem is the exponential size of the state space (in the number of variables). Indeed, the main challenge to such state-based approaches is in managing this complexity, but at the same time the frame problem dissolves. Dennett combines a serious discussion with playful stabs at academic philosophers, who emerge as simultaneously intellectually lazy (coming up with meaningful explanations are "not their problem") and expert at pointing out the obvious.Kyburg picks up on many of Dennett's themes in his contribution. His notion of practical certainty anticipates recent developments in probabilistic robotics [thrun]. Specifically, his description of how beliefs are updated from new observations seems to map directly into what filtering algorithms do. Again, shifting the representational paradigm from propositions to one based on utilities dissolves the frame problem into a belief distribution.Part four contains in general the weakest entries in the collection. The essay by Sterrett proposes a variation of the Turing Test for intelligence in terms of the ability of intelligent agents to "override instincts or habits". The problem with this "test" is that it is clearly not empirically verifiable. A native Martian watching a MER rover traverse around a large rock might conclude it is overriding its habit of traversing in a straight line. The designers of the AutoNav system on MER would no doubt respond that its actions are completely habitual; faced with similar obstacles, the AutoNav system would always respond in the way observed. Sterrett's essay in general suffers from an obviously superficial understanding of AI architectures. The reader gets the sense of being invited to be impressed by the fact that an academic philosopher with very little technical knowledge of AI is able to come to grips successfully and accept the idea of machine intelligence. However, this book is in general a stimulating, fun read.

Thinking About Android Epistemology, by Kenneth M. Ford, Clark Glymour and Patrick J. Hayes, includes papers by the editors and other major researchers in Artificial Intelligence including Marvin Minsky, Herb Simon, Anatol Rapoport, Douglas Lenat, and Daniel Dennett. From technical discussions about the Frame Problem to engaging commentary on philosophical topics such as the role of "human essence" and intelligence, many of the major issues of Artificial Intelligence are presented in a clear and easy to comprehend manner by many of the field's pioneers. To varying degrees each paper in the collection stands as a coherent and self-contained contribution. However, much is to be gained by reading the collection from start to finish. The book has few low points and serves as an excellent overview of AI. After reading the book I came away with the view that AI may be the ultimate conjunction of science and philosophy.

The author covers the rise of Chinese-American food from a socio-cultural perspective that interweaves American economic development and how Chinese immigrants found a niche catering to the demand for inexpensive restaurant food. Maybe only a person who likes sociology, history and Chinese food would find such a book fascinating. Then again, it is hard to resist a scholarly exploration of how chop suey (apparently representing what is now referred to as "stir fry") presaged Big Macs.

Good solid read, although who orders chop suey anymore

Very rigorous study, with citation of the documents and sources used. Well organized and with a clear thesis. This book has credibility.

Thus is a great book that really quantifies his food is at the center of globalization.

Good book.

Having read the entertaining social history of Chinese food in America, Chop Suey: A Cultural History of Chinese Food in the United States by Andrew Coe, I was expecting something similar in Chop Suey, USA. Although these books are almost identically titled, they are not at all similar. Yong Chen's is a personal and sometimes impassioned, look at the conditions of Chinese immigrants in 19th and 20th century America, the attitudes they faced from other Americans, and how Chinese food was enthusiastically accepted by all Americans. Professor Chen grew up in China and came to America in the 1990s as a graduate student, planning to return to China when he had earned his doctorate in American history. Instead, he made America his home and has been here ever since, first on the East Coast, and now on the West Coast. The first half of the book documents the tough time Chinese immigrants and even the first few generations had. Racism was the norm and it left the Chinese community with only a few career options -- laundry, being domestic cooks, and restaurants. When white and black America discovered that the food in the Chinese restaurants was plentiful and inexpensive, they took to it enthusiastically. Professor Chen explores the rapid spread of Chinese restaurants through the country and compares it to the rapid acceptance of American fast food in China in the past few decades.Later in the book, we learn more about the evolution of the Chinese restaurant and Chinese cuisine in America. Chop Suey, USA covers a lot of ground, about social trends, race relations, assimilation, cookbooks, and classes in America. If you are expecting a book about why America likes chow mein or who invented fortune cookies, look elsewhere -- this is a deeper, multi-layered look at the people behind the food.(Thanks to NetGalley for a digital review copy.)

Like many American, I *love* Chinese food, but I've never given much thought to the long and winding route it took on the road to popularity in the United States. "Chop Suey, USA" author Yong Chen has spent the last thirty years becoming an expert in the history of Chinese food in America and goes deeper into the subject than anything I've read before - about any food for that matter. To Chen, Chinese food in America reached such heights not because of its culinary merits, but because of socioeconomic factors. He recognizes that the spread of this particular cuisine enriched the American palate, but focuses more on the challenges Chinese immigrants faced as they worked to find their place in a foreign culture. The amount of research that must have gone into this analysis is astounding. Chen references everything from the earliest cookbooks to 19th century opinions on the staying power of Chinese food, all mixed with his own personal experiences. If you're strickly a foodie, don't expect this to be a love letter to Chinese food, as Chop Suey, USA does not exactly wax poetic about flavors and ingredients, but takes an anthropological, scholarly approach instead. In my opinion, this is a much more interesting approach and I hope to read more books like it!

Many non-Asian immigrant mothers, grandmothers, and children took in laundry and cleaned toilets, a fact that entirely escapes Yong Chen's victimization treatise. And, most heinously, he most dedicatedly and ignorantly ignores that in this country of, what he calls, an overabundance of food, there are long lines at the food pantries, and many who never make it that far. Too bad that, in all that research, Yong Chen is immune from socio-economic context. Usually, if I read something like this, I would learn, and not be completely put off by the author, and I would disparage anyone who would use words like "elitist," or "biased ethnocentric," to describe the author's point of view. But not this time.
