Excellent resource. I recently received three weeks notice that a friend was having a wedding in Alaska (mail carrier issues caused a significant delay) so I relied heavily on this guide to provide me information on what to do while I was up there. My wife and I had decided to use this wedding as an opportunity to take our annual vacation, without our kids, but really didn't know where to start. After a very satisfying, relaxing and enthralling 7 days, I must give great credit to this guide book for providing excellent information. Almost everything we did, or others had recommended that we do, was found in this guide book. The only exceptions: we stayed at the Comfort Suites in Anchorage-good enough choice, we used a personal reference and the internet to find a guide for a glacier hike of Matanasku Glacier-maybe in the book but didn't use it to find this, and used Avis in downtown (not the airport) to get a better deal on car rental. Otherwise, the guide book as my hand rail for that trip and would readily recommend to anyone looking for any help planning whatsoever in Alaska.
I had to return this Alaska guide because the light, small print was very difficult for me to read. I have average vision, but it was impossible for me to read. Judging by the index, it covered many subjects, and I was very disappointed that it was of no use to me. If the print had been readable, I think it would have been a good guide to plan my trip and to take along with me.I have used Fodors guides for many years and this was the first time that I had trouble reading the print.
I'm going on an Alaska Cruise and wanted to research the places we will visit. Fodor's consistently provides great thumbnail sketches and backgrounds of places along with some helpful hints sprinkled about. Having not yet gone on my cruise, I cannot say if all the stuff was accurate or not, but it assisted me greatly in planning what I like to see/do/buy when the ship lands in a particular port. For those still thinking of going on an Alaskan cruise, there is even a chapter dedicated to cruises. As a research tool, I use this book first and then I look up the particular activity on TripAdvisor.com to further my research and evaluation.
Recently used this book a cruise trip to Alaska's Inside Passage. It worked out well for top level planning, but it could not replace the information provided by a guide. It would have been nice to provide a walking tour description for every city. The inlet maps were good, but could be improved with suggested routes. Otherwise, this book contains plenty of detail for trip planning, but it should be supplemented with Internet research.
My son and I took our first vacation to Alaska this Summer, and I bought this guide just days before the trip. Not only did it help us determine the things we wanted to see on our shore excursions, but I learned a LOT about the state's history en route. Highly recommend!
This book is great for all the little details you want but would never expect to be told in a tour guide. It told us the great places to go and how to get there. It told us about the cost of each hotel and prices at restaurants, when is the best time to visit according to what you wanted to see. Shocked at all the info in this little book. I will look for Fodor's book for every city I plan on visiting.
I was a little disappointed in this Folor's book. There was not much in the way of recommendations for different places whether shopping or touring or places to eat. Seemed almost unfinished.
This e book was perfect for my recent trip to Alaska. It was full of information and ideas on what to do and where. Even though I am back I will refer to it and read the parts about life and history.
