Review

“Few writers have matched Capstick's flair for describing the hunt...in gruesome, realistic terms...A page-turner that is absolutely spine-tingling.” ―Publishers Weekly“This book had me on the edge of my seat. . .297 pages of spine-tingling yarns.” ―New York Times Book Review“Death in the Long Grass is an exciting book, superbly written.” ―Guns & Ammo“Capstick...is brilliant in his description of his hunts for some of Africa's most vicious killers...The terror produced by some of these pieces is almost too real. As the pages turn, breathing grows shallow, adrenalin is pumped into the veins, the palms sweat until the outcome is resolved and there is time to drag a handkerchief across a damp brow.” ―Chicago Sun-Times (Triple Recommendation Rating)“Death in the Long Grass will excite you, scare you and make you laugh...as a source of information it surpasses itself, and as a narrative it will hold the reader spellbound. . .” ―Guns Magazine

I bought this book for follow-up research for my sequel of 'Big Jim,' an adventure/novel set in Africa circa 1953. Capstick's novel 'Death in the Long Grass' was one of a dozen books I read for research, and I enjoyed it so much I bought two more of his novels touching on the subject of professional game hunting. He focuses on several hunters over several decades, and how their skill allowed them to track and kill vicious maneaters decimating villages in remote territories of Africa and India. His research is first-class, as is his skill as a writer. His stories could be turned into a movie, they are that good! His stories also touch on the fact how hunters help protect wildlife, and how many professional hunters work as game wardens, fighting poachers and protecting large areas of game reserves. It's full of adventure that whisks the reader to far off places in remote jungles where the hunter can be killed as easily as a hunter pulls a triggger. Aside from the excitement, readers will enjoy an educated look at how professional hunters are required to protect villages from rogue maneaters who make their stake against the easy-picking of far-off villages. I read this book about a year ago and I still think of its stories to this day. It's a book that'll encourage you to put visiting Africa on your bucket list... As it is in mine.David Lucero, author

I started reading Capstick's books some years ago, when he was hunting in Belize to get enough experience to getA license to be A P.H. in Africa, I spent some time in Belize, so I could visualize the things he wrote about, maybe the names of the people I knew were different, but there faces were all the same, he left A legacy that fewof us will ever have, even A rifle caliber named after him , .470 Capstick, that I watched him kill A big Cape Buffalothat was A monster, he writes very well, and he will put you there.God Bless......Jim.

Peter Hathaway Capstick is a master story teller and Death in the Silent Places is an amazing book. In typical Capstick fashion, he weaves interesting tales of other hunters as well as he tells his own stories in other books. Death in the Silent Places gives the reader a summary of many famous hunters and adventurers such as Colonel J.H. Patterson, famous for killing the Tsavo man-eating lions, and Jim Corbett who made his name ridding the Indian subcontinent of many man-eating tigers and leopards. He also introduces the reader to lesser known individuals such as C.H. Stigand, Major P.J. Pretorius, "Sasha" Siemel, "Karamojo" Bell, and others. This book takes the reader on an adventure where these individuals pursue lions, tigers, leopards, buffalo, and the most dangerous game of all, man. Although I have not read all of Capstick's books, I would put his writings at the same level as other great outdoor writers such as Jack O'Connor, Jim Corbett, and Robert Ruark. With a flair for the dramatic, Capstick does not disappoint with this book.

Chapstick continues his excellent writing with stories of some of the greatest big-game hunters who ever lived. His research is superb and his writing gives you a “you were there” feeling. If you like high adventure and tales of men who put to shame modern ‘manliness’, this book is highly recommended.

I first read this some years ago and thoroughly enjoyed. Now in my coming old age I enjoyed it even more. These histories of men the likes of whom we shall never see again. Politically incorrect due to the general anti-hunting of this age, these men are not to be judged. Written with great feeling and humor by a man who has seen death in silent places.

This is an older book and I have read it a few times. This one was a Christmas gift for my Dad and he loved it. For any fan of the hunting and big game hunting, this book will certainly be enjoyed.

Another Chapstick classic. I love Capstick and in my opinion, one of his best. Captivating, classic, manly stories with vivid detail that send you to distant place in time when men were men! I love this book and I think many will as well. A great look into the heart of the dark continent. My family loves this book and many of his others.

Awesome book. You will not be able to put it down. Its a book about horrific stories of man eating cats, German war ships, and cannibal tribesman. The man eating Lions, Jaguars, Tigers, and Leopards blew my mind as well as the men who took them down. After reading this book I immediately purchased "The Man-Eaters of Tsavo" by John Henry Patterson, as well as "The Man Eaters of Kumaon" and "The Man Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag" by Jim Corbett. I had to buy the original books after reading the stories of them in this one. Five huge stars. I have read "Death in the Dark Continent" and "Death in the Long Grass." This book is by far better than the other two. I don't want to spoil the stories so pick it up and learn about the most bad ass men and cats of Africa, South America, and India.
