About the Author

Maryann Grau was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2016. The devastating effects of the disease were not unknown to her as both of her parents, and an uncle she had been helping to care for had succumbed to the disease.  Additionally, both of her brothers are cancer survivors. The examples of courage, dignity, and humor demonstrated by beloved family members throughout their treatments were not lost on her, and she was determined to follow in their footsteps.Usually considered a death sentence-only 9% of pancreatic cancer patients survive more than five years-her diagnosis was no laughing matter. And yet, she credits her ability to write about her cancer experience from a humorous perspective as having had a major impact on her recovery. Maryann hopes that anyone facing difficult life challenges will read and draw inspiration from her book.  Maryann was born in New York City but spent most of her life in Southern California where she married, raised three children, and began a 34- year career with the Los Angeles Times. In 1994 she moved to London to establish the Times' first International business office, returning to California five years later. After retirement, Maryann moved into a seaside cottage in the small central California coastal community of Cambria. Her activities include leading aerobics and strength training sessions at the community center, performing in the local theatre, and taking brisk walks along the coast. For quiet time, she enjoys reading, writing and baking. Family being a big part of her life, she frequently travels south to visit her daughter and grandchildren in Laguna Beach. This is her first book.

This inspiring book is a must read for everyone. I read it in one day savoring each chapter. I just could not put it down. Maryann writes about this beautiful journey we call life and it’s many road bumps along the way. She masterfully connects her life’s experiences to her present life and creates a vivid picture of what it is like to be fighting for your life when you get the news that you have cancer. No doubt about it, it’s a crazy rollercoaster ride that doles out hope, despair, courage, fear, doubt, encouragement, and humor just to name a few. The feelings that make us human. The book is full of detailed information and extremely helpful if you have never experienced a relative or friend going through treatment. Maryann expertly weaves words together to show the humor in her experiences. She definitely demonstrates wit with a cleverness that will make you smile or laugh out loud. I especially liked the chapters “Two to Five” and the chapter about her grandmother telling her to “spend all of her kisses,” which brought me to tears. About those Fishnet Stockings....well, you will just have to buy the book to find out what that is all about. A great read!

If you or someone you love is fighting cancer, read this book. Maryann Grau was diagnosed in 2016 with pancreatic cancer. Was told she probably wouldn’t last a year. Well, she decided to ignore that statement and live longer.I know Maryann and she’s a great cook. Thought the first book she’d write would be a cookbook. This isn’t a cookbook, though she includes one recipe at the end. This book, as Maryann says herself, “… isn’t about cancer. It’s about choices.” Maryann could have swaddled herself in misery after the diagnosis. No one would have blamed her. Instead, she chose to follow doctors’ directives on chemo, radiation, and surgery, but chose not to listen to negative comments on survival rate.Through all the ups and downs of her battle with cancer she continued to “LIVE.” She shared her love of life with family and friends. Continued teaching exercise, acted in local theatre, and shared her experience with others by writing this book.Sure there were times when fatigue would set in. She’d grab a book and read, generally sitting in her front garden. But with or without fishnet stockings, in this book, Maryann shares how she responded to her diagnosis and how she lived and continues to live with humor and a positive attitude.

I loved the way this book made me feel affection and warmth for everyone mentioned on the pages. I appreciated the clarity and honesty of Maryann's words as she shared with us her good days and not so good days. The chapters quickly rolled by and I found inspiration and wisdom as I read. So many people will benefit from reading a book that deals with the importance of family, friends, and courage.

I was astounded at this new author's ability to write, her way with words, her ability to take you right along on her journey, experiencing the ranges of emotion from the highs to the lows, to the tears, to the laughter.I meant to read a few more pages in bed last night but could not put it down. So, instead, read until the wee hours of the night until it was finished, at 2 am thinking I should look out my window to see if I had awakened my neighbors with my loud laughing, and they are all 1/3 of an acre away! All of us, at one time or another, will either experience or have a friend, loved one or relative, experience a heavy-duty medical issue. This book is for ALL of us, not just cancer victims and I suspect the author would object to my using the word "victim". Maryann Grau has shown us a new perspective on dealing not only with life threatening illness but life itself, the "joy of living". You marvel at her tenacity, her fears, her humor but mainly, her "attitude" - such a lesson for every one of us.

This is a comedic, heartfelt, zany journey of one woman's yearlong fight against Pancreatic cancer. When Maryann was given her diagnosis , she was as devastated as anyone who hears that she may not be around very much longer. But she soon realized that she needed to kick up her heels ( being an aerobics teacher), and take her considerable tenacity on a new routine of life saving importance. Maryann's sense of humor was the key to getting her through chemo, dozens of daily medications, and surgery that saved her life ! Her story will make you cry and laugh at the same time, but mostly laugh. Anyone who needs to be have encouragement for their own cancer fight, or that of a loved one, will definitely get it here in this book.

Nothing beats a firsthand account from someone who’s been through the battle and lived to tell about it.

A tale of one woman's journey with cancer. Insightful and inspiring for anyone diagnosed with cancer and his/her family and friends. Spiritually uplifting and humorous. I read the book in one day; hard to put down after I started reading.

Cancer and Fishnet Stockings is inspirational, educational, and courageous. It is a beacon of light for those us who find ourselves in one valley or another. Maryann Grau has the gift of going with the flow in a world of comparisons and conformity. She teaches us to have the courage to be ourselves, claim our emotions, and to share our vulnerabilities, fears, doubts, and insecurities. Maryann shows us, among other things, the importance of friendship. It’s not how high we build our dreams in life or what we accomplish, but how high our faith can climb and what we give to others. I highly recommend this book to those who want insight into the true meaning of life.
