When it comes to looking up chords, I am personally not fond of using computers unless I have no choice. For me, a book feels more unchained and much quicker and I found this to be a very quick and simple book to use. First off, to be sure, let us remember, this is an encyclopedia of Chords, not a "how to play guitar book". So, let us keep the actual purpose in mind.The organization is very neat and tidy. They are in alphabetical order by the chord, and in that are broken down into chord-types (Major, Minor, Sus., etc.). For each chord they don't give you just one option but multiple other types and variations. They also include a small paragraph describing the chords...and how some people have used some of the variants that they list, and some light & well explained music theory that is pertinent to the chord/variations. This is important because it shows you the reasons why you would have a need to use a different combination than "root".It also has very clear pictures of both a sketched diagram of the exact frets you'll be hitting (and what notes they are) and a photograph of a hand actually forming the chord on the guitar neck. This gives you a good visual of what you will be doing. Also, at the end, they have what are called "single form" chords. Because in many genres of music, certain chord forms (as in hand forms) are commonly used. There are certain formations that are common in jazz, in Rock, etc. So they were kind enough to give you a basic introduction to many of these "genre chord forms".This chord book has been very helpful and I do keep it close. The biggest thing this book does, though, is reminds you that the chord is not the hand formation, but the combination of individual notes. There are an endless array of combinations for each chord...much more than any book can really cover. It kind of inspires you to think beyond "how do i form my hand" to "what notes do I need to hit". In fact, for me, I enjoy forming chords outside of what this book mentions. So all in all, I have found this to be one of the most helpful chord primers...a resource that even experienced folks should have. Enjoy!

I just recieved this book this afternoon. I had to write a review this early . Its hard to find the time, and thought to produce reviews. This is a great book. I have skimmed through the book already. Read and used some of the chord diagrams. Get this book if your looking for a good chord reference. Good for all range of players , beginners ,intermediate and semi pro's. The book is spiral bound , good if you need to make copies . Easy to open , decent size 8x7" ,and Pages are coated , good for when accidental spill of beer, wine, apple juice etc..,Great color . Diagrams are easy and large to read, especially when the book is on music stand or table at a distance. One of my more outstanding purchases.. Get one too..

I picked this book after looking through several at the bookstore. What I liked about it was that it had lots of chords and it gave you some of the "logic" behind the chord and why/where you might use them. Most other books just have lots of chord pictures laid out on the page which I did not find helpful.Also this book shows an actual photo of a hand playing the chord which I liked. The book's tablature (chord pictures) shows which note is the root in the chord which I also liked.Another cool thing is that the book is spiral bound so that it will lay open flat. This is really helpful when you're actually playing your guitar chords and not holding the book.So while this book doesn't have 1000's of chords like some do (it doesn't get into a lot of "fancy" chords--suspended, 11ths, 13ths, etc) it does give you 500 of the most useful ones. I also like the appendixes that have more blues, jazz, rock chords.It's a good book all in all.

Lots and lots of chords, everything clearly marked and presented. Great addition to my guitar practice. I just started with the first chord, and have been slowly working my way through. As a beginning classical guitarist, I bought it as a way to help me figure out and remember where all the notes on the fretboard are, plus understand what all the chord nomenclature means on jazz, folk, blues, etc. sheet music. I'm well on the way to achieving my goal. Great book -- highly recommended.

I have used this book extensively for the last couple of months. I got the spiral binding so it would stay open on a flat surface on its own.It has great pictures, descriptions, and little blurbs about interesting or useful chords.Great book for beginners like me, and, I imagine, intermediate to advanced.There is something nice about having a paper copy of something that is much nicer than looking it up on a digital screen.

A valuable resource which covers all common chord shapes and touches on the more exotic ones. Explains some theory behind chord formations and nomenclature but don't expect to learn the theory here. It lacks the standard chord pictographs and is lacking depth in the more complex dim and sus chords which is why I gave this 4 stars instead of five.

More chords than you'll need to be a player...some you'll probably never use; but the book is outstanding. You'll be able to track down that one chord that's stumping you in a song or a progression. You know it's some variant of a D chord, but you just can't find the voicing...this book will have that chord. You need a large chordal vocabulary to be considered a real player. This book will start you on that journey. The spiral-bound is great in that it lays flat on a music stand. It's also quite compact. You can tote it in your gig bag no problem. Rock on!

Small size, combined with wire binding make it a tremendously handy reference. For the beginner it provides an easy reference for basic chords. For advanced players, i find it provides a wealth of additional major, minor, sustained, 7ths, 6ths, etc. in an array of positions, that help better define and enhance the variety of folk and christian pieces I enjoy playing. Easy to read, quick view references make it a must have for the acoustic and/or electric guitar player thats not content with simply strumming a half dozen cowboy chords.

This 245-page book is one of those works of historical fiction where it is difficult to discern what is factual history and what is fiction. For all that I could tell, it appears to be a factual account of the fighting at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea during the winter of 1950. I assume that there were some parts of the story – maybe the conversations of the principals or maybe their thoughts – that could not be documented by the historical records, and so the authors called it a novel rather than a history. Either way, it is an outstanding story about an outstanding U.S. Marine, General Oliver P. Smith.O.P. Smith was placed in command of the 1st Marine Division shortly before the Inchon landing which swung the tide of battle against the North Koreans. The First Marines were a part of the newly formed Tenth Corps (X Corps), which was under the command of General Edward Almond, who also served as General MacArthur’s chief of staff. Almond ordered the X Corps to proceed immediately north to the Yalu River, the boundary between North Korea and China. O.P. suspects that they are being lured into a trap, particularly when elements of the Chinese army attack the lead units of X Corps.Despite Almond’s direct orders to proceed north as quickly as possible, Smith keeps the three regiments of the First Marines as close to each other as possible, thereby maximizing the firepower of the division. As the first two Marine regiments move up the west side of the Chosin Reservoir, an army regimental combat team races up the east side of the reservoir as ordered by Almond. The weather is subzero when the Chinese attack. The army unit is destroyed. The Marine units fight off the Chinese attacks.The book describes in detail the plans made by O.P. Smith for the movement of his three regiments, and the precautions taken for their combat supplies. Critical among the logistical planning are the airfields at division headquarters and the on-site building of a critical bridge on the way out of Chosin.There are other books on the Chosin Reservoir fighting that are more colorful and exciting, but this one is the best I have seen when it comes to a practical explanation of exactly what happened. Also, there are several maps that help you understand the troop movements, and a very helpful diagram that illustrates the engineering solution to the last bridge repair.It is a very good book.

I have been looking for a book that would talk about General Smith and his dealings with Almond and MacArthur. This book is it, it is a must-read for any student of history and I think it should be a must read for Recruits going through Parris Island and San Diego to be come Marines. This book is not written like a normal historical fact book, but more like a fictionalized account of the difficulties that Gen. Smith had with MacArthur's yes man: General Ned Almond. It is a very easy read and does not make one feel overwhelmed with fact after fact.No matter what anyone says, General Almond NEVER should have been placed in command of X Corps. He was a lousy commander and so was MacArthur. If they would have paid attention to General Smith and his Intelligence Officers then the Chosin Campaign never would have happened the way that it did or at all.This book tells the thought process that General Smith had and the types of staff officers, officers and enlisted men that General Smith had serving below him. If it was not for these great men, the 1st Marine Division would have been annihilated deep in the Taebaek Mountain Range.If you find this book interesting then I would suggest reading "For Country and Corps" by Gail B. Shisler, Major General O.P. Smith's granddaughter. It is another superb book on a Marines General!

These Marines pulled off a readable novel, based on the facts of the times. Very similar to my novel, "A Marine Called Gabe." My hat's off to a well researched novel. I had just finished an article on General Smith for the Marine Corps Gazette wherein many of the facts revealed in this novel were shown to be well placed. A very readable novel. Ragland is not a polished author, but the story is incredible and I think everyone should read it. Very few know of this part of our history and of this amazing General.

Great Korean War historical story of the valor and courage of the first Marine Division and its commander in the battle for the Chosin Resevoir.

I'm an old Marine and joined the Corps in '56, too late for Korea but my sergeants and officers were veterans of Korea. The Chosin vets were our heroes. This is a good read about the guy who saved the 1st Marine Division during that awful battle.

This was a very meaningful, super interesting read to me since one of my Grandfathers is a Veteran of the Korean War and my other Grandfather is a Navy Veteran that just started his duty at the very end of the Korean War. Well written dialogue, maps to follow along with the action and the historical detail make this a great book to learn and appreciate the sacrifice of the Veterans who fought not only then, but before and after those brave souls.

Great story of a greatly under appreciated marine. Saved the 1st Marine Division. Semper Fi.

Take the lousy aviation jobs I had and exaggerate it by 10. Probably exaggerate Alex’s by a lesser amount. Just for fun. All good satire has a grain of truth though, and anyone who has had a job where little airplanes tried to make money in the late 90s/early 2000s recognizes the stereotype people and situations. Good fun fast read for the anyone who paid their dues in General Aviation.Bought the prequel “CFI” too.

Was hoping for some aviation based entertainment but sadly disappointed... The book is a compilation of sophomoric stories of booze, drugs and bodily function failures. Same chapters would have fit into a bar scene (like Cheers) or any other "situation-comedy" arrangement; just change airplane to keg, or pizza, or bowling alley and you're "cleared for takeoff"... There was so little flying in the narrative this book could've been written by someone who had never flown anything but Microsoft Flight Simulator...I gave it two stars because it was at least well written, and the stories although of no interest to me, were fairly coherent...

The beginning of Hauling Checks indeed is quite humorous. In the "Freight Dog" industry they live by the motto, "Any place, Any time, Any weather," ... religiously!The best parts of this quick amusing read was the pilot's conversations with the chief, and his wit and ability handling planes under any conditions, often to include going co-pilot-less, despite a lukewarm body being seated (sometimes "nut strap" harnessed) in the co-pilot's seat. I couldn't help but to keep thinking that this man (the pilot) needs to fly for major commercial airlines, where his service would be appreciated. This made the ending most rewarding to hear what became of his career.A misbehaving, enjoyable light read.

Alex Stone combines all the dysfunction of the light freight / charter industry into one side splitting tome. Those in the industry will identify with the characters portrayed. Excellent read.

As a few folks have pointed out already, there are times when this novel is side-splitting funny. And there are times when the lack of editing or cartoonish character building is painfully obvious. (I mean does ANYONE really buy "The Co's" character?)But overall, it's a simple, short, funny NOVEL! (And to all you offended pilots, airline, aircraft folks posting a one star, THAT'S the operative word. It's a novel folks - no reason to tee off on it. Overall, it was a great one-day read. Not superb, but worth the price.

I know what it takes to run an FBO and 135 certificate being in the business myself. The author really can drum up some wild tales that would put a charter company out of busiess in a day if any one of his scenarios were actually true. The Co character in the story is totally a wild man that can only exist in in a fabricated novel like this. I did enjoy reading this book and think that the author must be quite a fun guy to crew with with all of his imagination and funny stories.

I’ve been around general aviation in various ways for 25 years. I found this an amusing read, and have met some folks like the caricatures in these stories.

Possibly the funniest book I have ever read. Having worked for an FBO in the past, I found a lot of it believable.

This book is definitely on the beginners side of the spectrum. (no pun intended) You're not going to learn to be a production designer just from reading it, but it's a great start to becoming more aware of the use of color in film (or comics, video games or any other visual media) to influence underlying mood of the story. And once you're aware of color's presence, you can start making educated choices on how to use color in your own work.Although a few more pictures would've been nice, the author does a good job of taking each of the six primary & secondary colors and defining its role in general and then giving numerous specific examples of the different visual and emotional tones each color can take.If nothing else, this book added about 8 movies to my Netflix queue.

Made color correlations I would have never put together. Not a tedious read as one would expect of an "educational" tome. Quite interesting.

Barely any reference photos in the book, relies way too much on the knowledge of the films it refers to. Overall a weak analysis of the use of color as a literary tool.

Patti does a great job communicating how color can be used to tell a story and reveal character; which you’ll agree is an important tool for any artist to have in their creative toolbox. Most books on color either get too science heavy or seem to get into abstruse, almost mystical territory. This book is a practical smooth read, helping you to exercise your intuitions about color in storytelling. Love it.

I had been looking for a book like this for ages. I can only recommend this book to anyone who is involved with film, and not only cinematographers or art designers. I wish I had read this book when I was in film school, my films would have looked much better. It really gives you an overview on the impact of colors in film and helps you to understand when and why a specific color should be or could be used. It does not try to set up rules for color use, instead it functions more as a guideline on how a specific color could be used to influence your audience's emotions.Awesome Book. Easy Read.

I really wanted what this book promised, what it held out to me in the "search inside" feature - but the deficiencies in style, content, and format are severe enough to warrant a serious warning against purchasing this book, or at the very least, this edition.The text is written like new-age spiritual guidance lit - there are gaps in logic everywhere, and every argument is based off of a story instead of a fact. Providing some acuity on a color or its psychological effects would be what I would expect from a book that costs as much as a textbook, instead, the reader is put in the mood for the upcoming chapter with descriptions of color that read like horoscopes. Reds are divided up into "Powerful, lusty, and defiant reds," & "Anxious, angry, and romantic reds." Why not start off with cool reds and warm reds? Because you're being sold on the words, not on the colors, and not on some sort of proof.Which leads me to the fact that there are 28 stills from films in this 243 page book. To reiterate: 243 page book on visual storytelling, 28 examples. Oh, there are some nice pictures of road signs and various other stock photos, and - no joke - some paintings the author's students made. 12 of those inside. They're kind of nice. But they are nothing more than a cheap magician's misdirection - these students come up again and again as proof that people "see" a color a certain way. Yeah, red's "anger" or "passion." I don't need a book, or someone else's experience to tell me this - I bump my head, or rub my eyes, and I see red. I want to be told how red communicates anger and passion to an audience. Simply stating that it does so is not providing me with a fact, it's providing a tautology.Now let's look past the medium and to the message: as long as we take the emotional cues we're told to, we have a little interesting analysis underscored with flecks of color theory, but this is in fact still a problem - the text ought to be centered around the color theory; instead, the sections read like some films were screened, the author wrote down a couple obvious ideas, then filed them by color - and missed the best films and points entirely. Where is Kieslowski's COLORS trilogy? Three top-shelf films, each based around a color, ignored. Talking about the color orange in "The Godfather?" How about, I don't know, mentioning the ORANGES present when main characters are killed? No sir. How about a chapter for black, and a chapter for white? Not technically colors, sure, but we use them as and/or with colors. A lot.If you're really considering purchasing this book, try very hard to find it at a library first. Or look up a color on wikipedia. If you're set on spending money, buy a color wheel, or simply look further for color theory.I'm going to donate my copy to the library.

From an era of vision casting in the church this work is very thorough in the topics covered yet at the same time gets bogged down in details. It is not a text book that reads like one. It seems out of place in the simple church concepts that church leadership is seeking in this era of 2017. It is amazing how much has changed in such a short time. "Simple Church" by Geiger and Rainer on the otherhand has continued to be relevant in the quest to be pleasing stewards of God's provision of the church. Just over halfway through Unique I started flipping through the pages. It wore me out. There are some very helpful portions but for me they came early on.

This book offers some helpful guidance for developing a vision that leads to action rather than just looking good on paper. It lays out the groundwork for establishing the foundation for the vision and giving it a frame within which to develop. There are some good tips for communicating the vision as well. There is a lot of information here, and the process can seem complicated, so reading it slowly and/or more than once can help one digest the information better.

There are a lot of books around on formulating mission, vision and strategy, so it is rare to find one which has something new to say on the subject. Will Mancini's book succeeds in bringing a fresh and very useful perspective to the subject. He says that churches commonly neglect what makes them unique, instead gravitating towards adopting programs and mindsets that work elsewhere. A church can become truly effective only once it discovers its own uniqueness.In my view the author's critiques of other people's strategic planning models (such as Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Church model) are a little overdone, but the book comes into its own when it starts talking about clarifying the vision. The process starts with discovering your Kingdom Concept, which is found at the intersection between your Local Predicament (the unique needs and opportunities of the location in which God has placed you), your Collective Potential (the unique resources and capabilities found in your congregation), and your Apostolic Esprit (the particular focus which most energises your leadership).One of the imperatives of clarifying the church's vision is "framing" it. The Vision Proper is framed by the church's Mission (statement of purpose), Values (shared convictions that guide the actions of the church), Strategy (process which the church uses to accomplish its mission) and Measures (things which are measured to determine how well the church is achieving its mission). While none of these individual components is new, the manner in which the book suggests working through them is both innovative and very helpful. I highly recommend this book for church leaders.

This is one of the better church growth, missional books I have read recently. This book seems to blend the ideas of positive church growth concepts with the missional focus of the church. The book has some great ideas for congregational direction and mission. One concept was "too many goals threatens to make anyone one goal unclear." This seems to be the case in too many congregations. In years past, the idea for church growth was to added program onto program, and some churches followed this method. The problem was that the churches that were promoting this were already large churches. A two hundred size congregation does not have the resources or the manpower to accomplish this model for ministry. Instead of having bunch of goals, focus on one. The book talks about this need for excellence in one area.Another wonderful section was concerning the history of church growth to missional. This was clear and highly helpful. I could go on about all the wisdom in this text, but really there is too much. On my Kindle I take notes, and so far this book has the most notes. There are great illustrations, clear information, and deep quotes. This book is definitely worth your time in improving and moving your congregation ahead on the mission of God. Here is one great quote, "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up men to gather wood, divide the word, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea." This book teaches how to do this.

Strategic planning was the preferred way forward for many churches over the last several decades, but Mancini argues it produced marginal results at best. I checked this out from my local library and knew after making The vanilla almond recipe I had to have this book permanently. The decorating ideas are adorable and creative. Her step by step instructions make cookie decorating much easier for a beginner. Decorating cookies is NOT easy, but this book makes it as easy as it can be.

First off, the pictures are amazing. The whole book is very well done. This book is fantastic for aspiring bakers. It really shows how it is done step-by-step. I bought this for a friend and she LOVED it. This book is a bargain for the price and you will not regret it. My review will be brief only because I do not bake but the person I got it for loved it.

This has become my cookie bible. Bridget really produced a beautiful book and it is so easy to follow. I have been making royal icing decorated cookies for a year and there really is not one cookie in the book that I would not attempt because her instructions are excellent. I've made quite a few and I have been so happy with the finished cookie. Tons of information. A must have for the cookie maker.

Daughter in law requested this book for Christmas. She enjoys making cut out cookies and decorating them. She has learned a lot from the book and has made beautiful cookies from the ideas and instructions in the book.

This book has the best recipes for cookies. They roll out perfectly and the way she explains how to make and use the royal icing is priceless. I use you tube videos and this book and made professional looking cookies for the holidays. I recommend it.

Great book with the basics! I am a novice and new all the help I can get, and this book really was easy to read, with tips and suggestions that are practical, realistic and very helpful.

The book was very well organized and easy to follow. My first batch of vanilla cookies and key lime cookies tasted amazing!! Mrs. Edwards (author) includes a troubleshooting section for the cookies and royal icing, which helps in making corrections or adjustments when needed. I'm very happy with the book and would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in making great tasting cookies.

The book is so full of colorful designs and gives great instructions to make your cookies look just like the picture. The author also provides blogs and is also on Pinterst. This is my second book! I bought one for my daughter (who shares it with me) and one for my future daughter-in-law who uses her grandmother's recipe for the actual cookies and the ideas for decorating them from the book! We all love the book and will probably use for gifts on Christmas and wedding showers.

In today's world there are few good role models for our children, but Jesse Labeau is definitely one I would recommend. As a father I am always on the lookout for good inspiring books, with the right message for my sons to read. In an effort to be a responsible parent I will take the time to read all books myself before offering them to my boys. "Among the Giants" is a very solid and inspiring story about a kid who refused to give up even with the odds of success seemingly stacked against him. It's about old fashioned sticktoitiveness and the ability to overcome challenges even with overwhelming obstacles in the way. I actually found it not only a great book for my boys but also personally inspirational for myself as well. A good reminder to never yield and constantly move forward in life no matter the challenges, which I believe is a good message we all need on occasion. I highly recommend this book to all parents looking for beneficial books for their children to read.

I am so impressed with this book – and so surprised!Peppered with his own personal story of adversity and success, this motivational read lit a fire in me to take what I am truly passionate about to the next level. As a prior athlete myself, many of us didn't win the genetic lottery that would allow us to play a sport at a professional level. It’s certainly refreshing to read what Jesse has done to create his own avenue. At the root of it all was his drive, dedication and persistence to make something of himself and his athletic prowess allowed him to continue on in industry that is exciting and reputable.I would highly recommend this books to anyone regardless if they are an athlete or not, there are many wonderful nuggets of advice to apply in any career.

Can't say enough good about this book. It's inspiring to hear success stories about people who are truly doing what they love and are passionate about.So many motivational books and self help books try to simplify success into one thing or make it sound easy. Jesse speaks the truth and encourages young people to follow what they are passionate about but doesn't gloss over the fact that it takes hard work, commitment, and sacrifice to do what you love. I have, and will continue to reccomend this book because it's real, inspiring as well as captivating. Can't go wrong with this easy read! Especially for $15!!!

This should be required reading for all young people! I have purchased an additional 4 copies to give away. It is a valuable book.

This book was phenomenal - everything Jesse said made perfect sense. Don't be afraid do what you have to do to make your dreams come true.

Anytime a book is wrote for kids I always want to read it to my kids and see what they like about it and what was lacking from their view point. After all, they are the attended audience. Since I was reading this book to 3 different children, at different stages in life that are 8, 15 and 19 I really thought one of them would not like it, which is pretty normal, but I was surprised that they all enjoyed the book and got something out of it. My sons love basketball. Will they ever play professionally, probably not. That's what I adored about this book though and what they liked about it as well. It was a great motivational book for chasing yoour dreams, even if they are not exactly what you hoped originally they would be.Jesse lays out 28 different life lessons that he has discovered chasing his dreams. These life lessons are easy to relate to and apply to your own life as well. What it really came down to though was hard work, dedication, a fighters spirit, your attitude and belief in something outside of yourself. My kids can relate to this, Ive been drilling these concepts into them since they were little, but as kids tend to do, hearing it from someone else makes it sink in and applicable to life.My daughter really loved the QR codes that allowed her to go and watch different commercials, videos and links to other websites. Since she is a very visual learner, adding these QR codes really sold her on the book and drove home concepts that Jesse was talking about. It gave the book a great sense of engagement with the reader that I have never seen done before. Plus, it did not hurt any for Jesse to be young and attractive. That is always a nice way to get a teenage girl interested in a topic!For such a young man to write something so powerful and engaging is extraordinary. It was an encouragement to read about this young mans struggles, his passion for life and his ability to overcome adversity that would have kept many down, but instead Jesse used those trials and struggles to strengthen himself and push forward. Easy book to recommend to all teens.
