Kids Need to Be Safe: A Book for Children in Foster Care (Kids Are Important), by Julie Nelson

From School Library Journal

Pres-Grade 1–Meant to reassure children in foster care, this accumulation of short, declarative sentences stresses the importance of being safe. The illustrations show a multiethnic cast of kids and adults, some in positive situations and others in more stressful settings. The first half of the book discusses, in the briefest possible terms, why kids end up in foster care, and the second half talks about foster parents and other adults in supporting roles. There is virtually no transition from one thought to the next, giving a random feel to the text. With only 10 spreads, the extreme brevity alone imposes some limits. Still, the information presented seems arbitrary, at best. One entire spread is devoted to the statement, Usually moms and dads take good care of kids and keep kids safe. If the audience for the book is truly the one stated in the subtitle, why emphasize what these children's parents have failed to do? The rather ordinary paintings are weakest at reflecting facial expressions. A brief but helpful informational message for adults is appended, giving tips on helping foster children work through their difficult emotions, and a list of adult resources is also included. The book does offer validation of a living situation that affects thousands of children in the U.S. each year and explains it in a straightforward style, albeit with mediocre results.–Faith Brautigam, Gail Borden Public Library, Elgin, IL Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. There are so few foster parent resources out there, and this book reaffirms the mantras we try to instill in our kiddos' heads. Kids are important. Kids need to be safe. The illustrations are beautiful and show a diverse array of children and situations as it walks through why a child may need to live with relatives or in a foster placement. Kids need to be safe, and being able to read this with your child as you would any other story gives new context and makes these kiddos see that they are not wrong or weird or so different. All kids need to be safe. All kids deserve the chance to thrive. Make sure to check out the resources in the back of the book as well!

As a therapist working with children who have experienced trauma, I'm always looking for books that get straight to the point as many children who have experienced trauma don't have the longest attention spans. If I had to pick only five books to use with my kiddos, both of Julie's books would be in the top five. With this book, I love that the message that children are important and need to be safe is repeated over and over in this book. By the end of the book, kids are repeating this message with me as I read it which I find great value it. I hope Julie writes more books covering these types of topics.

“KIDS ARE IMPORTANT. KIDS NEED TO BE SAFE.”Really gave us, and especially the children, a simple explanation that provided comfort as well as supported their sense of self worthSome of the pictures seem a little intense for a small child, but they are still a much softer and nicer way to portray the realities that some of our kiddos have experienced along with the idea that theu aren’t the only oneThe pictures also open a dialogue with children who aren’t sure how, or even which emotions they want to expressWe read it slowly giving them time to take in the message and time to ask any questions or express any thoughts that may occurMost importantly, we make eye contact every time this phrase appears “KIDS ARE IMPORTANT. KIDS NEED TO BE SAFE.”

Bought this book as a way to prepare our 3 1/2 y/o foster daughter for her move to a new family. We were able to draw similarities between the kids in this book and her. The book (with a few others) helped us have some very difficult conversations in a way she could, at least partially, understand. We kept repeating the mantra "you need to be safe." I reason I gave it 4 stars is some of the concepts seemed to be over her head.

This is one of the perfect books for children in Foster Care. This helps them to understand so much more and how important they are. They learn to repeat, Kids are important, kids need to be safe. I have actually bought several of these and highly recommend this book.

The pictures were nice, but this book was not as good as I expected at all. Every page just has one short sentence and then "kids are important, kids need to be safe". It is VERY repetative. There is also a passage that while good INTENDED, it caused an emotional meltdown that still occasionally pops up in conversation with my adopted daughter. There is a bit that says "All parents love their children even if they need help taking care of them." My daughter stared at it for over an hour and is still struggling with understanding whether or not her birth mother abused her out of love, and if she did really love her because the books said "all parents love their chidlren". This really was a foolish thing to put in a book for some children who probably, don't all have parents who love them. If you want a good foster care book, get The Star.

This is a great book. My niece is in foster care and after reading this book it made her understand things. I highly recommend getting this book if you have a small child in foster care.

Very good read for foster families.

The Emancipation of Evan Walls, by Jeffrey Blount

Review

"If you aren't already 'woke, ' you will be after reading this book."--Mary Batten, author of Aliens from Earth "The Emancipation of Evan Walls is one of the most sensitively told, yet brutally honest reflections on race and identity in recent history." --Jonathan Odell, author of Miss Hazel and the Rosa Parks League "Jeffrey Blount has written a timely novel of enormous power. Evan Walls shows the kind of courage we wish weren't needed, but still is today--the courage to defy convention, step beyond boundaries and risk everything to live the life you desire. The Emancipation of Evan Walls is a page turner and more, an important addition to today's crucial conversations about race and privilege." --Masha Hamilton, author of 31 Hours "I found this story shocking and thought-provoking. There is so much inherent drama to Evan's story. His world is well-drawn from the get-go. There is a great feel for the place and time and the dialogue is superb." --Christina Kovac, author of The Cutaway

This book is outstanding! A man moves into an unusual apartment building and works with the other tenants to decipher all the mysteries within. In my opinion, it is reminiscint of the TV show LOST! The mysteries and strange occurrences reminded me of it.This book is very well-written. The author developed the characters well and the relationships between them are realistic. What they say and do is believable, and matches their varying personalities. Great imagery in the book; it is easy to picture in your mind the things the author describes. This book will have you staying up late and just as curious as the characters as to what is happening in the apartment building. It is engrossing and fast-paced, and thankfully not too short or rushed; at the same time it doesn't drag at all. The ending is quite satisfying - no cliffhanger here. The plot to this book is unique and not like other books. This uniqueness is one of the reasons I gave 5 stars; it is not often (unfortunately) you read something with a truly original plot that hasn't been done time and time again. Thats not the only reason I'm giving 5 stars! It is very well-written and intriguing. I'd recommend this book to anyone!

Peter Clines’ books have become my newest obsession, especially if Ray Porter is narrating them on audiobook! And of the ones I've read lately, 14 is by far my favorite! There were some crazy, oddball reveals that absolutely blew my mind. There is no way anyone could have seen what was coming! In 14, Nate moves into an apartment building and discovers a couple of strange things about his place. While talking to a neighbor, she introduces him to other tenants and other oddities about the building. Before you know it, Scooby Do and gang decide to solve the building's mysteries, and craziness ensues!!I don't think I've been this enamored with an entire cast of characters as much as I was with most of the Scooby Do gang. They were all so completely endearing to me.There was so much humor with the banter that was going on between the characters that I found myself constantly grinning (in between my bouts of WHAT THE F...?!)And that ending! Very satisfying! I can't wait to see what Clines comes up with next!

I accomplished nothing in my life once I started this book. Housework remained undone, social obligations were skipped, sleep went unslept, and home cooked meals were downgraded to whatever could fit in a toaster. If this book was a person it would be the biggest tease, leading me on to believe that if I finished just one more chapter the book would pause its pace and let real life slip in. But its hooks and twists had me absorbed till the end and I was powerless to its demands to put aside work and keep on reading. My home is starting to slowly get back to normal now that I've finished the book. Fortunately Peter Clines has written more books so I can carry on blaming him for the state of my house and lack of sleep.I guess what I'm trying to say is, I really enjoyed this book.

This is the second of Clines’s books that I’ve read; 14 takes place in the same world as The Fold but tells a different story. I really enjoy these books; in part that’s because they scratch a very particular itch. I love a certain blend of science fiction, horror, and adventure, and Clines gets that mix just right.Things start a little slowly as we get to know the inhabitants of the apartment building. I enjoyed this part–the characters are fun and interesting. One of the things I really like is that although Nate is the driving force, or trigger, that gets all of these people exploring their building’s secrets, the others end up jumping in too. It isn’t the standard thing where two people try to investigate something and everyone else is too scared or in denial to join in; this is a nice ensemble cast piece.Soon the residents are exploring mysterious tunnels beneath the building, discovering writing on the walls hidden by layer after layer of paint, and opening doors that definitely should not be opened! There’s a touch of steampunk to the book, a twist of Lovecraftian horror, and a really interesting group of determined people. I particularly like the fact that there are some relationships that develop that aren’t the seemingly obvious ones. The characters are fun; they each have their own breaking points, their own actions and reactions, to what’s going on.While I found 14 easier to put down than The Fold, it’s still pretty riveting in places, and it too made me want to read more by Clines. It seems I’ve found an author who likes just the sort of stories I do!

What do you get when you the venerable Mr. Lovecraft has a mysterious uncle who travels to another, parallel universe and lives to tell about it? What do you get when a really smart writer decides he wants to marry sci-fi and horror? In the first case, you get 14. In the second, you get the creator of 14. Since I love the Cthulhu mythos and science fiction, 14 seemed tailor made for me - and it was. It's an adventure to unravel the mysterious rooms, dimensional conundrums and bloody graffiti. With Nate and Veek and Tim, with the other inhabitants of the Kavach Building making up an intrepid exploration team, Peter Clines gets it all right, with a nod to Shaggy and Velma, of course. This book is a fun romp through a horrific imagining that is a fitting, loving homage to Lovecraft.

What an absolutely insane book. This really threw me into the deep end of the sci-fi genre. The good:Very interesting storyGood charactersThe not-so-good:Takes a very, very long time to get to the juicy parts. Like 60% in and you're still cluelessI would recommend this book. One of my favorite reads of last year.

From the Author

I wrote this book as I was registering my daughter for Kindergarten. She is a unique little girl that is always thinking outside the box. I didn't want her to ever lose the qualities that make her special, and that's where the inspiration for this book came from. We use the book in our house as a conversation starter on how to make your own decisions and to respect that others can make their own as well. It's made such a difference that I wrote two more books in the same series to follow!  I hope you enjoy them as much as we do! This was a gift for my granddaughter, who tends to march to the tune of a different drum, so to speak. She’s very independent, inquisitive and does things her own way. She smiled as we read this book and she could really relate to the character! I think this book encourages kids to see things differently. Great storybook!

Nice lesson for children---con't bow to Peer pressure.

We did not like this book. It seems more like the character just did what they wanted to do regardless. Parents gave her a pair of shoes and she said no she would rather wear another pair.Nope not in my household.

Very happy with my purchase!

Not the best example for the lesson intended in the story.

Loved it. It teaches kids that it's ok 59 be different and some5imes even adults fail at that. Will read it several times to my Toddler.

The simplicity of the writing, easy for a 7 yr old to comprehend.

Did not like this book at all. I did not find that this book gives a child confidence to think for themselves. Very disappointed in this book. It is more silly than anything. Would not recommend.

According to the book’s jacket, Kagge is the first man to have completed the Three Poles Challenge on foot—the North Pole, the South Pole, and the summit of Mount Everest. Wow! I would submit that his greatest challenge however, was the decision to write a book about silence. He obviously experienced a lot of silence when he trekked across Antarctica alone for 50 days. But this isn’t a book about the exploration of remote places. This is a book about the silence within, the kind of silence that is found on a crowded subway or a barren mountaintop. In fact, according to Kagge, you have to find it on the crowded subway. That is life. And that is when you need it most.I completely agree. I lived in China for nine years. Having grown up in a small town in rural America and lived most of my adult life in a house that sat a few thousand meters from its nearest neighbor, I moved to Beijing, a city of 22 million, where personal space is, by necessity, simply non-existent. If you can’t get used to the idea of your face being mere inches away from the face of the stranger standing next to you on a crowded subway, you won’t survive.Looking back, however, learning to live without personal space was more a process of personal liberation than an accommodation to my new reality. Never in my sixty-three years have I learned more about myself or become more comfortable in my own skin. The book is a chronicle of philosophy on the topic of silence. But rather than just summarizing that discussion, Kagge applies it to everything from exploring the underground world of New York City to the appreciation of art and music.Which is pretty bold, when you think about it. He could sell a lot of books merely sharing some of his unusual and exotic tales of adventure. But he doesn’t do that here. He is wagering this book on his ability to share himself at the most intimate level. And I think he is successful. This is a very good book by a very intriguing individual. Silence, as Kagge points out, is all about listening-to self, the people you love, and the world around you. That’s where you find joy and purpose.

We live in a busy world. It's loud, it's chaotic, and it's a non-stop race in one of a million different ways. Everything is connected--and while that proves convenient at times, other times that connectivity thanks to technology creates a huge gap in our lives. I'm a hiker--and I adore the opportunities to go on remote hikes and not encounter other people... as a people person that may seem odd, but it was my way to "get away" and really clear my head. Ironically, I used to hike with any of a number of playlists going, letting the music motivate me. I haven't listened to music on a hike in years.Around the time I gave up on music during hikes and walks, I was turned onto minimalism. While minimalism and silence may not go hand-in-hand, they are both ideas and concepts that have come on with a maturity and better understanding of what is important in the world. I find myself now teaching my daughters about the importance of little things, and how big they can seem and how much we can learn. Looking at two blades of grass on the surface sounds boring, but when you get down to the details it is fascinating. Silence is the same. This book was recommended by my father who is a wise 68. He is one of the wisest people I know--so I bought the book and read it last week. It's a potentially quick read, but that's dangerous. A book like this needs to be taken slowly and digested. Philosophical at it's core, you need to allow yourself the time to really soak up what Kagge is saying... if you can do that, you'll be better for it. You'll appreciate things you never considered before, and life will be richer.

Of the many diverse books I’ve read in my 77 years “Silence...” is the only one I’ve felt compelled to read more than once. The first time, I found it a quick read and it’s 33 short stories exceptionally engaging. I started read two the next day and found myself slowing down to think about each story, to marvel how each one relates to me and my life. I immediately started read three — catch this — at 2:30 in the morning, slowing down automatically as I contemplate what certain elements of each story are telling me where to and how to seek and practice silence in my daily living. And just when I thought I thought I was finished with this little book, l found myself in read number four, as I use “Silence” to help me meditate. Thank you, Erving Kagge. BTW, When one my four children gave me your book as a surprise, she told “Dad, when I read the blurb about it, I knew you’d love it.” I have given seven copies (ordered throughAmazon, ahem) for my children, grandchildren and a dear friend who is the editor of a major US university’s alumni magazine. He emailed me: “Finished chapter one. Can’t put it down. “

A short, powerful book about finding our own quiet space and learning to love existing there. The book is so incredibly silent, almost deafening in its message. The last chapter says it all.

I have purchased several books on this subject and found this one to be the best. One bit of advice, however, order it in hard copy (not Kindle) because you will be working with charts and tables fir which you cannot increase the font and the font showing up on the Kindle will be so small you can't read it without a magnifying glass. Also, you'll need to flip back and forth to some of the tables at the end of the book. Very well written, author knows her stuff. Highly recommend this book to those who are trying to live a good life but keep having childhood abandonment issues influence their thoguhts and choices.

This book takes you to uncomfortable places that we tend to try to pretend didn't happen but this book encourages us to go there for a short time so we can heal from our pasts. It does not leave us in a place of hurts but gently nudges us to be brave and work thru so that we are not stuck in our old behaviors that have molded us but bring us to an even better version of ourselves so we can learn how to act and react in ways we were not taught before. Healthy, productive ways.

A detailed and wonderfully written book. Very helpful with clients.

changed my life. who knew so many of us suffered abandonment.

Great book so far, really hit home. Cried my eyes out the first few chapters. Now I have to read the rest..

The author really has an excellent grasp of the dynamics of a dysfunctional family. She not only helps you to see how your childhood defenses helped you to survive in your family of origin, but she shows you how to heal from the wounds that were created thereby not repeating the same patterns. I highly recommend this book if you came from a dysfunctional family and want to understand what happened.

Book is easy to read, but every page has useful information. I was amazed at how thorough it is in explaining issues. It opened my eyes or clarified what was already tumbling around in my mind. I've read several books on healing from emotional abuse, and I feel this is an excellent resource.

A must read book for adult children raised in dysfunctional families. It was as though someone had seen inside my childhood and written down in a book. I had no idea how non-functional my family was. So many things happened in my family which I had still considered "normal"; but they weren't. It opened my eyes and pointed me towards finishing the past. No longer will my decisions be tainted by my childhood. Thank you Claudia Black!

#31,280 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

What I have to say needs to be heard. I remain aghast and horrified by the comments, insults and worse by the nay-sayers of Alex Berenson's book. This has NOTHING to do with judgement, lifestyle or anything close to that. This has to do with getting out the truth - real and vital information that can save lives and hopefully shed light on the devastation being caused by marijuana use for more individuals than people have any idea. THC assault on the brain is impacting tens of thousands upon thousands of people and many more than that, when you include the concentric circles of families and beyond.I am an educated woman who has been on this journey with my son, now in his late 20’s, for more than 5 years. Some background on my son - he was a standout student/athlete in high school who went on to a top college where he became an All American distance runner his senior year. He had a passion "to make a difference in the world" and wrote his senior thesis on the inequities of our country's education system with plans to pursue his PHD, which his thesis advisor implored him to do. He joined Ameri-Corps and moved out west with his college girlfriend to teach economically disadvantaged children. Everything went well for the first year but sometime during the second year, things started to fall apart. We had no idea he had started smoking marijuana, which he had never used during HS or college. We asked him to come home to see if we could help him and shortly after that, he had his first psychotic break. That was when we found out about his marijuana use. This journey has now been ongoing for over 5 years. Our son has had over 17 hospitalizations, been in long term treatment programs, been committed to two different state mental institutions, been in jail and homeless on the streets. We have had to call 911 more times than we can count. And every time he is released, he resumes his pot use as he cannot fight his addiction, and the descent into delusional psychosis and then full psychotic break ensues. As one doctor so eloquently stated at one point, "pot will always trump everything."I have educated myself through research, attending conferences, speaking to doctor after doctor and meeting family after family on the psych wards. I have met some of the top doctors and psychiatrists in the field of psychosis and marijuana induced psychosis. They all know it; the hospitals, the medical providers, doctors and psychiatrists, and the families affected. But, as Mr. Berenson writes, the reasons this information is not being released in this country are convoluted, complex and driven by profit. I am familiar with many of the research findings Mr. Berenson states in his book. Other countries are light years ahead of us - Finland, Australia, the U.K. - in understanding the connection between marijuana use and psychosis/schizophrenia. The connection between the "predisposed brain" is still not completely understood and more research needs to be done. Mr. Berenson does an outstanding job writing about the history of the plant, the medical protocols surrounding THC and CBD plus the high potency THC of today and what a powerful psychoactive drug it is. His statistics on the relationship with violence is horrifying and well documented. Please everyone wake up, pay attention ... this is REAL! Mr. Berenson has taken a courageous step in exposing hidden truths with the aim to inform, not condemn. As a seasoned reporter who knows how to dig for truth and facts, he has meticulously researched and presented his findings - the history behind marijuana, proven scientific data and personal stories which speak to the truth. The claims by the nay-sayers on the whole "correlation-causation" with no cause-and-effect relationship is like the beginning years of tobacco saying the warnings of nicotine and lung cancer were anecdotal and unfounded. Again, this has nothing to do with anything beyond wanting to expose the truth around marijuana and the brain. I am an open-minded individual who leans primarily liberal on most things. But I am also a mother who has watched her son's life be destroyed and that of her family. The marijuana industry is a multi-billion dollar industry which is being driven by profit over the safety and well-being of human lives. The truth needs to be told.

This book does an excellent job of examining the link between cannabis use, mental illness and violence. Many cannabis advocates claim that cannabis makes you chill, and for many users that is undoubtedly true. But for many other users, it causes paranoia and triggers underlying psychosis which can lead to all manner of bad outcomes including violence. Although the media hasn't really explored the links until this book, it is troubling that many of the most notorious terrorists and mass murderers of our time were heavy cannabis users including Timothy McVeigh, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Denver bomber James Holmes, Jodi Arias, many of the recent terrorists in Europe and many more. You can say that "correlation does not prove causation," but the correlations that his book exposes are too extensive to ignore. It makes a compelling case that more research is required before rushing into commercialization of this drug.Perhaps even more importantly, we are ignoring the negative societal effects of pot use, particularly in vulnerable people and communities. People from solid backgrounds can often smoke pot and still function as productive citizens. These people often don't see the negative effects it has on people and communities without resources and privilege. I went to high school in a rural, lower income town in the 1970's, and 40 years later, everyone I knew who smoked pot in high school is either dead or in a very bad place. You can say "correlation doesn't prove causation" all you want, but you do so at the risk of ignoring the huge amount of evidence and red flags out there.Thank you to the author for being willing to withstand the blowback from cannabis advocates and profiteers who vilify and intimidate anyone who dares to explore the downside of marijuana commercialization. The public needs to know all the facts and more research needs to be done.
